Chapter 13 – The Last Move

The smile on Jonathan Black's face haunted Detective Carter.
It wasn't the smile of a man who had lost.
It was the smile of someone who believed the game wasn't over.
As the armored convoy descended Raven Hill toward the federal detention center, Carter watched Jonathan through the reinforced glass separating the prisoner compartment.
Jonathan sat perfectly still.
His hands were cuffed.
His ankles were restrained.
Two U.S. Marshals sat beside him.
Yet he looked almost... relieved.
Carter turned to Lisa Monroe.
"Something's wrong."
Lisa nodded.
"I know."
"He surrendered too easily."
At the observatory...
FBI cyber specialists worked through the night examining the hard drives Gabriel had saved.
Thousands of encrypted files appeared on their monitors.
Blackwood's finances.
Secret shell companies.
Offshore accounts.
Bribery payments.
Political influence operations.
Every minute revealed another crime.
Then one analyst froze.
"Detective..."
Carter walked over.
"What is it?"
The analyst enlarged a document.
At the top were two words.
PHOENIX PROTOCOL
"Open it."
The room fell silent as the file loaded.
The first page contained only a single sentence.
If Jonathan Black is ever captured, Phase Two begins immediately.
Every investigator exchanged uneasy glances.
The document continued.
Blackwood had never depended on one man.
Jonathan had spent decades preparing successors.
Regional directors.
Financial controllers.
Legal advisers.
Encrypted communication networks.
Automatic transfers of authority.
If he disappeared...
The organization would continue operating.
Lisa looked at Carter.
"So arresting him isn't enough."
"No."
Carter closed the file.
"We have to dismantle everything."
Meanwhile...
Gabriel underwent emergency surgery.
The bullet had passed through his shoulder without striking major arteries.
When he awoke hours later, Amelia was sitting quietly beside his hospital bed.
He looked surprised.
"I didn't expect you."
Amelia smiled faintly.
"You saved my life."
"I nearly helped destroy it."
"You had the chance to finish Jonathan's order."
"But you didn't."
Gabriel stared at the ceiling.
"I kept asking myself one question."
"What question?"
"If Elizabeth Sterling believed I could become a good man..."
"...why couldn't I?"
Amelia reached into her pocket.
She placed Elizabeth's journal on the bedside table.
"My mother believed people were more than the worst thing they'd ever been taught."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
"I wish she'd lived long enough to tell me herself."
Across the city...
Nathan Hawthorne sat alone in federal custody.
His lawyers had all withdrawn.
His business partners refused to answer his calls.
His bank accounts remained frozen.
For the first time in his adult life...
No one came to visit.
Then a guard approached.
"You have one visitor."
Nathan looked up hopefully.
"Who?"
The guard opened the door.
Richard Sterling entered.
Neither man spoke for several seconds.
Nathan finally broke the silence.
"You came to gloat."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"I came to understand."
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"Understand what?"
"How someone I treated like family became willing to murder my granddaughter."
Nathan lowered his eyes.
"I stopped seeing people."
"I only saw inheritance."
Richard's voice remained calm.
"Was it worth it?"
Nathan looked around the empty interview room.
The steel table.
The concrete walls.
The orange prison uniform folded beside him.
His answer came quietly.
"No."
At Blackwood headquarters...
Federal agents searched every room.
Behind false walls they found artwork worth millions.
Forged passports.
Stacks of cash.
Hidden weapons.
Then Lisa Monroe entered Jonathan's private office.
Everything had been meticulously organized.
Nothing appeared rushed.
Jonathan had expected the raid.
She opened the bottom drawer of his desk.
Inside rested a small wooden music box.
When she lifted it, a folded letter slid onto the floor.
The envelope bore only one name.
Gabriel
Lisa immediately secured it as evidence.
Later that evening...
With Gabriel's permission, Carter opened the letter.
The handwriting was Jonathan's.
Gabriel,
If you're reading this, then you've chosen against me.
I always knew this day might come.
You were never cruel enough to become my successor.
That was Elizabeth's influence... not mine.
There is one truth I never told you.
I did not kill your mother.
I promised her I would protect you.
I broke many promises.
That was not one of them.
Gabriel looked stunned.
"What does he mean?"
Carter continued reading.
If you want the truth about your parents...
Ask Richard Sterling.
The room fell silent.
Everyone slowly turned toward Richard.
Richard's face had gone pale.
"I didn't know..."
Richard whispered.
"I swear I didn't know."
Gabriel looked at him.
"Know what?"
Richard sat heavily in a chair.
"Your mother came to me."
"When?"
"The night before Elizabeth died."
"She begged me to hide you."
"Why?"
"Because she believed Jonathan wasn't the only one hunting your family."
Gabriel frowned.
"There was someone else?"
Richard nodded slowly.
"Charles Hawthorne."
The name struck everyone like thunder.
Nathan's adoptive father.
Jonathan's first business partner.
The man officially declared dead twenty years earlier.
Gabriel stared in disbelief.
"Charles is dead."
Richard looked into his eyes.
"I attended his funeral."
Then Carter interrupted quietly.
"No..."
He held up one of the newly decrypted Blackwood files.
"We found Charles Hawthorne's death certificate."
He placed another document beside it.
The signatures were different.
The fingerprints didn't match.
The body had never been identified through DNA.
Lisa's eyes widened.
"The funeral was staged."
Richard whispered,
"Then Charles Hawthorne..."
"...is still alive."
At that exact moment...
Hundreds of miles away...
A luxury yacht quietly sailed through the Atlantic Ocean.
An elderly man with silver hair stood alone on the deck watching the sunset.
A younger assistant approached him.
"Sir."
"The observatory has fallen."
The old man nodded.
"And Jonathan?"
"Captured."
The elderly man remained silent for a long time.
Finally...
He smiled.
"Jonathan always wanted to be remembered as the king."
He looked toward the endless ocean.
"He forgot..."
"...kings can be replaced."
The assistant lowered his head.
"What are your orders, Mr. Hawthorne?"
The old man turned slowly.
His blue eyes were cold.
Unforgiving.
Identical to Nathan's.
"Change course."
"To where?"
He smiled.
"Home."
Back in the interrogation room...
Detective Carter's phone suddenly rang.
The Coast Guard had intercepted an encrypted satellite transmission.
Only six words had been successfully decoded.
The Founder was never Jonathan.
Carter slowly looked toward Richard.
Then toward Gabriel.
Finally...
Toward the dark window reflecting his own face.
The nightmare they believed was ending...
May you like
Had just become much larger.
