Chapter 12 – The Observatory

The convoy raced through the rain.
Police cruisers.
Unmarked FBI SUVs.
Armored tactical vehicles.
Their flashing lights reflected across the wet pavement as they climbed the winding road leading toward the abandoned Sterling Observatory.
For decades, the observatory had stood empty atop Raven Hill.
Long before Richard Sterling built his business empire, the stone building had belonged to his family.
Elizabeth had loved the place.
As a little girl, she spent countless nights there studying the stars through the giant telescope with her father.
Now...
It had become Jonathan Black's final refuge.
Detective Carter studied the satellite images displayed on the dashboard.
"Three entrances."
"One underground tunnel."
"Roof access."
Lisa Monroe looked at him.
"If Jonathan planned this..."
"He'll have escape routes."
"He always does."
Gabriel, seated in the back of the vehicle with his hands uncuffed but under guard, quietly spoke.
"No."
Everyone turned toward him.
"The tunnel collapsed years ago."
"The roof helipad only supports one helicopter."
"What about inside?"
Gabriel closed his eyes, remembering.
"He'll be waiting in the telescope chamber."
"Why?"
"Because that's where Blackwood began."
Twenty-nine years earlier...
Jonathan Black first met Charles Hawthorne inside the observatory.
No cameras.
No witnesses.
Only two ambitious men.
Jonathan placed a leather folder on the telescope platform.
Inside were bank accounts.
Government contracts.
Political donations.
Blackmail files.
"We don't steal money," Jonathan had said.
"We control the people who own it."
Charles smiled.
"And if they refuse?"
Jonathan looked toward the stars above.
"They disappear."
That night...
Blackwood was born.
The convoy reached the observatory.
Rain lashed against the ancient stone walls.
The building looked abandoned.
Dark.
Silent.
Too silent.
Detective Carter raised his fist.
The tactical teams stopped.
"No lights."
"No movement."
Lisa whispered,
"He's expecting us."
Carter nodded.
"He invited us."
Inside...
Jonathan Black stood beneath the massive brass telescope.
Its gears had long since rusted, but it still pointed toward the sky.
Around him stood eight armed Blackwood operatives.
All loyal.
All prepared to die.
Jonathan looked remarkably calm.
On the table before him rested three objects.
Elizabeth's journal.
Amelia's recording pendant.
A revolver.
He smiled.
"Everything returns home eventually."
One of his men hurried inside.
"They're here."
Jonathan nodded.
"And Gabriel?"
"With them."
Jonathan sighed.
"I always wondered whether he would choose blood..."
"...or truth."
He looked toward the observatory doors.
"We're about to find out."
Outside...
The loudspeaker crackled.
"Jonathan Black."
"This is Detective Daniel Carter."
"The building is surrounded."
"There is no escape."
Jonathan laughed softly.
His voice echoed through the observatory's ancient speakers.
"Detective..."
"Every man who has ever hunted me said exactly the same thing."
"You've murdered innocent people."
"Yes."
"You've destroyed families."
"Yes."
"It's over."
Jonathan smiled.
"No."
"It's history repeating itself."
Without warning...
The observatory doors slowly opened.
Jonathan stepped outside alone.
No weapon in his hands.
Only Elizabeth's journal.
Rain soaked his black overcoat.
He looked almost peaceful.
Detective Carter approached cautiously.
"Where are your men?"
Jonathan smiled.
"Waiting."
"For what?"
"The future."
Carter noticed something strange.
Jonathan wasn't trying to flee.
He wasn't negotiating.
He was buying time.
Meanwhile...
Inside the observatory...
Gabriel quietly slipped away from the tactical team.
Lisa noticed immediately.
"Gabriel!"
He didn't stop.
He knew something the others didn't.
The telescope chamber wasn't the true command center.
There was another room.
One only Jonathan and Gabriel knew existed.
If Jonathan reached it...
Every Blackwood file remaining in existence would disappear forever.
Gabriel sprinted down a narrow stone staircase.
Memories guided every step.
He reached the basement.
A rusted iron door.
The old keypad still remained.
He entered the code Jonathan had taught him as a child.
1-9-9-8
The lock clicked.
The hidden archive opened.
Rows of servers hummed quietly.
Encrypted drives blinked green.
Blackwood's digital empire.
Still alive.
Gabriel immediately began copying everything onto the hard drives he had brought.
Above ground...
Jonathan continued talking.
"You know..."
"I admired Elizabeth."
Richard Sterling stepped forward from behind the officers.
"You murdered my daughter."
Jonathan looked at him calmly.
"I gave the order."
Richard's hands shook with rage.
"Why?"
Jonathan looked toward the observatory dome.
"Because she refused to compromise."
"She believed truth mattered."
"And you?"
"I believe only power survives."
Richard slowly walked closer.
"You know what she told me the day before she died?"
Jonathan remained silent.
Richard smiled sadly.
"She said..."
'One honest person can destroy a thousand liars.'
Jonathan laughed.
"Then she underestimated mathematics."
At that exact moment...
The observatory lights suddenly went dark.
Then back on.
Then dark again.
Jonathan's smile disappeared.
"No..."
One of his operatives shouted from inside.
"The servers!"
"They're being copied!"
Jonathan turned toward the building.
"Gabriel."
Without another word...
Jonathan sprinted inside.
Detective Carter shouted,
"Go!"
The tactical teams stormed the observatory.
Gunfire erupted.
Glass shattered.
Smoke grenades filled the corridors.
Blackwood operatives opened fire.
SWAT officers returned controlled bursts.
The ancient observatory became a battlefield.
In the basement...
Gabriel watched the progress bar.
72%
"Hurry..."
Footsteps thundered above him.
The steel door burst open.
Jonathan entered.
Behind him...
Only silence.
His operatives had fallen.
He looked at Gabriel.
Not with anger.
With disappointment.
"You chose them."
Gabriel never stopped copying the files.
"I chose myself."
Jonathan slowly drew the revolver.
"I raised you."
"You raised a weapon."
"I loved you."
"No."
Gabriel looked directly into his eyes.
"You owned me."
Jonathan's hand trembled for the first time in decades.
"You would've inherited everything."
"I don't want your empire."
The progress bar climbed.
91%
Jonathan raised the revolver.
"You've become weak."
Gabriel smiled sadly.
"No."
"I've become free."
A single gunshot echoed through the basement.
Detective Carter kicked open the door.
Smoke filled the room.
Jonathan stood frozen.
The revolver had fallen from his hand.
Gabriel remained standing.
But blood spread across his shoulder.
Jonathan had missed his heart.
Gabriel looked at Carter.
"The drives..."
"Take them."
Carter grabbed the copied files.
At that exact second...
Every server inside the room suddenly went black.
The self-destruct program had activated.
One by one...
The machines erased themselves forever.
Gabriel smiled through the pain.
"I copied enough."
Jonathan looked around the dying server room.
Thirty years.
Gone.
He slowly laughed.
Not hysterically.
Almost peacefully.
"So..."
"This is how Blackwood ends."
Detective Carter stepped forward and placed handcuffs on Jonathan Black.
"You are under arrest for conspiracy, multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, fraud, racketeering, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice."
Jonathan didn't resist.
As officers led him upstairs...
He looked back at Gabriel one last time.
"I failed you."
Gabriel answered quietly,
"No."
"You failed yourself."
Outside...
The rain finally stopped.
For the first time in nearly three decades...
The sun broke through the clouds above the old observatory.
But Detective Carter couldn't shake one troubling thought.
Jonathan had surrendered too easily.
As the FBI transported him toward federal custody, Jonathan looked out the window and smiled.
Not the smile of a defeated man.
The smile...
May you like
Of someone who still believed he had one final move left.
