Chapter 8 – A Daughter's Choice

The maintenance tunnel fell silent.
The echo of gunfire faded into the distance.
Only Amelia's uneven breathing remained.
She doubled over as another contraction seized her body.
Pain radiated through her abdomen and lower back.
She gripped the concrete wall, struggling to stay on her feet.
Tears streamed down her face.
"My baby..."
Across from her, Evelyn Black still held the pistol.
But it no longer pointed directly at Amelia.
Her hand trembled.
Outside the storage room, Detective Carter kept his officers back.
"No one fires," he ordered quietly.
"If anyone shoots in there, we could kill Amelia—or the baby."
The officers lowered their weapons.
No one spoke.
The next decision belonged to Evelyn.
Inside the room, Amelia slowly looked up.
"You have children?"
Evelyn's expression remained unreadable.
"No."
"But you were someone's daughter."
The words struck harder than any bullet.
Evelyn looked away.
"My father raised me."
Amelia shook her head.
"No."
"He trained you."
Silence.
"You don't know anything about me."
"I know enough."
Another contraction forced Amelia to her knees.
She cried out despite trying to stay quiet.
Evelyn instinctively stepped forward.
Then stopped herself.
She wasn't supposed to help.
She was supposed to complete the mission.
But the woman in front of her wasn't the monster Jonathan Black had described.
She wasn't dangerous.
She wasn't greedy.
She was simply trying to protect her child.
Years earlier...
Jonathan Black had found Evelyn in a government foster home.
She had been only eight years old.
"You don't have a family anymore," he had told her.
"I can give you one."
He kept his promise.
He gave her a mansion.
Private schools.
The best education.
Martial arts.
Languages.
Firearms.
Cybersecurity.
Psychology.
By the age of twenty-five, she could dismantle criminal organizations, infiltrate corporations, and disappear without leaving a trace.
But there had always been one rule.
Loyalty before conscience.
Question nothing.
Feel nothing.
Obey everything.
She had never broken that rule.
Until today.
Outside the hospital...
Richard Sterling watched the tactical teams surround the building.
His hands shook as he spoke to Carter over the radio.
"Daniel."
"If Amelia goes into premature labor..."
"How much time does she have?"
Carter looked toward the obstetrician standing beside him.
The doctor answered immediately.
"If the contractions continue without treatment, both mother and child are in serious danger."
Richard closed his eyes.
He had already lost his daughter.
He couldn't lose his granddaughter too.
Back inside the tunnel...
Amelia slid slowly to the floor.
"I can't..."
She struggled to breathe.
"My daughter..."
Evelyn knelt almost without thinking.
"When did the contractions begin?"
"After..."
Amelia gasped.
"...after we started running."
Evelyn checked her pulse.
Rapid.
She remembered the emergency medical training Jonathan had insisted she learn.
Another contraction.
Closer than the last.
Too close.
She looked toward the tunnel entrance.
Detective Carter called out calmly.
"Evelyn."
"The obstetric team is waiting."
"They're unarmed."
"No one will approach unless you allow them."
She remained silent.
Could she trust him?
Jonathan had always warned her.
Police lie.
Trust no one.
But Jonathan had lied too.
He had said Amelia was the enemy.
Nothing about this woman looked like an enemy.
Miles away...
Jonathan Black watched the hospital through a live drone feed.
His smile disappeared when he saw Evelyn kneeling beside Amelia.
"What are you doing?" he muttered.
One of his associates looked over.
"Sir?"
Jonathan picked up a secure phone.
"Evelyn."
She answered immediately.
"Yes."
His voice became cold.
"Finish the mission."
Evelyn looked at Amelia.
She was crying quietly.
Trying not to scream.
Jonathan repeated,
"That's an order."
For the first time in her life...
Evelyn didn't answer.
She ended the call.
Jonathan stared at the disconnected screen.
His face darkened.
"She hung up on me."
No one in the room dared to speak.
Evelyn slowly stood.
She opened the storage-room door.
Detective Carter raised his empty hands.
"I'm not armed."
Behind him stood two doctors and three nurses.
No weapons.
No tactical gear.
Only medical equipment.
Evelyn looked back at Amelia.
Then she made the decision that changed everything.
She placed the pistol on the floor.
With her foot, she kicked it toward Carter.
Gasps echoed through the tunnel.
"I'll surrender."
"But save her first."
The doctors rushed past.
Within seconds they surrounded Amelia.
One physician quickly examined her.
"We need to move now."
"It's too dangerous to deliver here."
A stretcher was brought in.
As they lifted Amelia, she reached for Evelyn's hand.
"Thank you."
Evelyn froze.
No one had thanked her in years.
As officers handcuffed Evelyn, Carter approached her.
"You made the right choice."
She smiled sadly.
"My father won't think so."
Carter followed her gaze.
"You know we'll protect you."
She shook her head.
"You don't understand."
"He never leaves witnesses."
At that exact moment—
A deafening explosion rocked the hospital's underground parking garage.
The blast shook the walls.
Dust poured from the ceiling.
Car alarms erupted everywhere.
Officer Reynolds shouted into his radio.
"Explosion in the south garage!"
"Possible secondary attack!"
Carter's expression hardened.
"It wasn't to kill us."
He looked at Evelyn.
"It was to kill you."
She nodded.
"I told you."
Across the city...
Jonathan calmly watched the smoke rising from the hospital.
One of his men asked quietly,
"Should we attempt another extraction?"
Jonathan poured himself a glass of whiskey.
"No."
"Evelyn made her choice."
"And traitors have only one ending."
He walked toward a wall covered with photographs.
He removed Evelyn's picture.
Without hesitation, he fed it into the fireplace.
The photograph curled and blackened in the flames.
Then Jonathan picked up another file.
This one was much thinner.
Only one photograph rested inside.
A smiling little girl around six years old.
Long brown hair.
Bright blue eyes.
Jonathan looked at the photograph with unusual softness.
"So..."
He whispered.
"It seems you're the only one left."
An associate frowned.
"Who is she?"
Jonathan smiled.
"The real heir to Blackwood."
Meanwhile, Amelia was rushed into the maternity intensive care unit.
Doctors worked quickly to stop the premature labor.
After nearly an hour, the contractions finally slowed.
The chief obstetrician stepped into the waiting room.
Richard and Carter stood immediately.
"Doctor?"
He smiled with relief.
"We managed to stop the labor."
"The baby is stable."
Richard let out a long breath.
"And Amelia?"
"She's exhausted..."
"...but she and her daughter are both safe."
For the first time in days, hope returned.
Then the doctor's smile faded.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"When we performed the emergency ultrasound..."
"...we found something unusual."
He handed Amelia's medical scan to Carter.
Tucked beside the image was a tiny metallic object.
Not inside the baby.
Hidden within the lining of Amelia's maternity support belt.
Someone had stitched it there months earlier.
The surgeon carefully opened the tiny capsule.
Inside was a rolled strip of waterproof paper.
Only four words were written on it.
Lake Orion. Boathouse Seven.
Richard stared at the message.
His face turned pale.
"I buried Elizabeth there..."
Carter looked at him sharply.
"What?"
Richard nodded slowly.
"Not her body..."
He swallowed hard.
May you like
"...her empty coffin."
