Chapter 6 – The Ghost Called Blackwood

A heavy silence settled over the interrogation room.

Detective Carter didn't speak.

Neither did Eleanor Hawthorne.

The ticking of the antique wall clock suddenly sounded unbearably loud.

Finally, Carter broke the silence.

"Tell me everything."

Eleanor slowly removed her wedding ring.

She stared at it for several seconds before placing it on the table.

"I've worn that ring for thirty-four years."

"It represents every mistake I ever made."

She looked directly into Carter's eyes.

"You think Blackwood is a company."

"It isn't."

"It's an organization."

Twenty-nine years earlier...

Jonathan Black had been one of the FBI's brightest agents.

He specialized in financial crimes, corporate corruption, and organized crime.

Officially.

Unofficially...

He discovered that controlling billionaires was far more profitable than arresting them.

Instead of exposing criminal empires...

He began building one.

Blackwood became a secret network.

Judges.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Politicians.

Corporate executives.

Every member served one purpose.

Control wealth.

Eliminate obstacles.

Never leave evidence.

"If someone refused to cooperate..." Eleanor whispered.

"They arranged accidents."

Car crashes.

Boat explosions.

Plane failures.

Medical mistakes.

Everything looked natural.

Nothing ever led back to Blackwood.

"And my daughter?" Richard Sterling asked quietly from the doorway.

Eleanor lowered her head.

"Elizabeth found out."

Richard felt his knees weaken.

He slowly entered the room.

"I've waited twenty-eight years for that answer."

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

"She discovered Charles Hawthorne was laundering money for Blackwood."

"She confronted him."

"He begged her not to go to the authorities."

Richard's voice trembled.

"My daughter would've reported him."

"She intended to."

Eleanor nodded.

"Jonathan Black decided she couldn't."

The room fell silent.

"So they murdered her."

"Yes."

"And Amelia?"

"They planned to kill her too."

Richard closed his eyes.

"She was only six months old."

"They wanted every Sterling heir gone."

Across town...

Forensic technicians finally accessed the encrypted computers recovered from Blackwood's warehouse.

Hours of work.

Thousands of password attempts.

Then...

Success.

The first folder opened.

Its title chilled everyone in the room.

PROJECT HEIRS

Detective Lisa Monroe clicked.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Medical reports.

Birth certificates.

Every major American family connected to billions of dollars had been monitored.

Each profile carried one of three colored labels.

Green.

Yellow.

Red.

Green meant useful.

Yellow meant watch.

Red...

Eliminate.

Lisa searched one name.

Amelia Sterling Hawthorne

The file opened.

Status:

RED

Priority:

Immediate

Reason:

Last verified Sterling heir.

She looked at Carter.

"They've been planning to kill her for years."

Meanwhile...

Nathan sat alone in his holding cell.

For the first time since his arrest...

Fear replaced arrogance.

Not fear of prison.

Fear of Blackwood.

He knew one rule above all others.

Nobody failed Jonathan Black.

Nobody.

A guard approached.

"You have a visitor."

Nathan frowned.

"My lawyer?"

The guard shook his head.

"No."

A man in an expensive gray suit entered the interview room.

He appeared to be around sixty.

Perfect posture.

Silver hair.

Warm smile.

Nathan immediately stood.

"You..."

The man calmly sat down.

"I told you not to fail."

Nathan's breathing became shallow.

"Mr. Black..."

Jonathan smiled.

"No."

"Mr. Black died twenty-seven years ago."

"My friends simply continue using his name."

Nathan whispered,

"They're investigating everything."

Jonathan nodded.

"I know."

"The warehouse?"

"I expected you'd lose it."

"The recordings?"

"I expected Amelia to survive."

Nathan stared.

"You planned for this?"

Jonathan smiled again.

"I plan for everything."

Nathan leaned forward desperately.

"You have to get me out."

Jonathan looked almost amused.

"Why?"

"I've done everything you asked."

"For years."

"I married Amelia."

"I gained Richard Sterling's trust."

"I transferred the money."

"I arranged the accident."

Jonathan interrupted him.

"And yet..."

"She's alive."

Nathan had no answer.

Jonathan slowly stood.

"I came only to say goodbye."

Nathan's eyes widened.

"What?"

"You've become a liability."

The older man adjusted his cufflinks.

"You understand how Blackwood handles liabilities."

Nathan's face turned white.

"No..."

"Please..."

"I can still help."

Jonathan simply smiled.

"You already have."

He walked toward the door.

Without looking back, he spoke one final sentence.

"You were never meant to inherit the empire."

"You were only meant to protect it."

The door closed.

Nathan collapsed into his chair.

For the first time in his life...

He realized he had never mattered.

At the hospital...

Amelia finally held the ultrasound photograph of her daughter.

The tiny profile.

The tiny fingers.

The tiny heartbeat.

She smiled softly.

"I'll protect you."

No matter what.

Richard entered carrying coffee.

He noticed the smile.

"She's beautiful already."

Amelia laughed quietly.

"She has your stubbornness."

Richard smiled.

"I hope she has your mother's courage."

Before either could speak again...

Detective Carter hurried inside.

"We have a problem."

Richard immediately stood.

"What happened?"

Carter placed a photograph on the bed.

Security camera footage.

Hospital corridor.

Only thirty minutes earlier.

Jonathan Black.

Walking calmly through the building.

Amelia's smile vanished.

"He was here?"

Carter nodded.

"He disappeared before officers reached the floor."

Richard frowned.

"How?"

"He never appeared entering the hospital."

"Or leaving."

Amelia looked toward the ceiling.

"He wanted us to know."

Carter nodded slowly.

"I think so."

Later that evening...

Blackwood's warehouse revealed another secret.

Hidden beneath the concrete floor...

Investigators discovered an underground vault.

Inside were shelves filled with old case files.

Thousands of them.

Each labeled with dates spanning nearly three decades.

One investigator called Carter immediately.

"Detective..."

"You need to see this."

Carter entered the vault.

His flashlight swept across the shelves.

Then stopped.

One cabinet stood apart from the others.

Marked only with a brass plaque.

FOUNDATION

Inside...

Three photographs rested side by side.

Elizabeth Sterling.

Charles Hawthorne.

Eleanor Hawthorne.

Each photograph had a handwritten date.

Then Carter noticed something impossible.

A fourth photograph had recently been added.

Amelia.

Taken only three days earlier.

On the back someone had written:

Final Phase Begins.

Before Carter could respond...

Every light inside the underground vault suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Emergency alarms screamed through the warehouse.

Above ground...

Officers shouted.

Someone yelled,

"Fire!"

Then came the explosion.

The entire warehouse shook violently.

Concrete cracked.

Steel beams groaned.

Dust filled the air.

Carter threw himself behind a support column as flames raced through the tunnel.

The evidence.

The computers.

The files.

Everything Blackwood had hidden for nearly thirty years...

Was disappearing in an inferno.

Far away, from the rooftop of an abandoned office building, Jonathan Black watched thick black smoke rise into the night sky.

He lowered a pair of binoculars.

A young woman stepped beside him.

She couldn't have been older than thirty.

Elegant.

Calm.

Ruthless.

"Did it work?" she asked.

Jonathan nodded.

"Most of the evidence is gone."

"And Detective Carter?"

"He survived."

The woman smiled faintly.

"Good."

Jonathan looked at her with curiosity.

"You've always liked difficult opponents."

She looked toward the burning warehouse.

Then quietly said,

"Because defeating ordinary people proves nothing."

Jonathan placed a fatherly hand on her shoulder.

"It's almost your turn."

She nodded.

"I've waited my whole life."

Jonathan smiled proudly.

"Then it's time."

He handed her a sealed file.

Across the front was a single name.

AMELIA STERLING

The woman opened it.

The first page contained only one sentence.

Bring me the last heir... alive.
