Chapter 14 – The Price of the Truth

The room fell into stunned silence.

The Founder was never Jonathan.

Those six decoded words echoed through Detective Carter's mind.

Jonathan Black had built Blackwood.

He had expanded it.

He had ruled it for decades.

But if he had never been its true founder...

Then someone even more dangerous had been pulling the strings all along.

Carter slowly looked at Richard Sterling.

"You said Charles Hawthorne died twenty years ago."

Richard nodded.

"I believed he did."

"But if the funeral was staged..."

Lisa Monroe finished the sentence.

"...then Charles has been hiding in plain sight."

Inside the federal detention center...

Jonathan Black sat alone inside a reinforced interrogation room.

His wrists remained shackled to the steel table.

The surveillance cameras never left him.

Yet he looked almost amused.

The heavy door opened.

Detective Carter entered carrying only Elizabeth's journal.

He placed it on the table.

Jonathan smiled.

"So..."

"You've finally read her words."

Carter remained standing.

"Who founded Blackwood?"

Jonathan said nothing.

Carter slid a photograph across the table.

Charles Hawthorne.

Jonathan looked down.

His smile widened.

"You've always been intelligent, Detective."

"Were you partners?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Jonathan leaned back.

"I was an employee."

Carter's expression hardened.

"What?"

"For twenty-nine years..."

"I followed orders."

The admission felt impossible.

Jonathan Black...

The man who had terrified politicians, judges, billionaires, and criminals alike...

Had served someone else.

Carter quietly asked,

"Why?"

Jonathan's answer came without hesitation.

"Because Charles Hawthorne dreamed bigger than I ever could."

Twenty-nine years earlier...

Charles Hawthorne stood inside the unfinished observatory.

He stared at architectural blueprints spread across a wooden table.

Jonathan entered carrying financial reports.

"The banks are ready."

Charles nodded.

"The judges?"

"Bought."

"The politicians?"

"Controlled."

Charles smiled.

"Good."

"What do we call it?"

Jonathan asked.

Charles looked through the observatory dome toward the night sky.

"Blackwood."

Jonathan frowned.

"Why that name?"

Charles answered quietly.

"Because forests survive by hiding the strongest trees."

Back in the present...

Jonathan folded his hands.

"Charles never wanted money."

"He wanted influence."

"He wanted families to believe they made their own choices."

"When in reality..."

"...every important decision had already been arranged."

Carter's jaw tightened.

"And Amelia?"

Jonathan looked at Elizabeth's journal.

"Elizabeth was the only person who truly frightened Charles."

"Why?"

"Because she could prove Blackwood existed."

Meanwhile...

A Coast Guard surveillance aircraft tracked the luxury yacht moving steadily toward American waters.

Inside the yacht's private study...

Charles Hawthorne poured himself a glass of tea.

Unlike Jonathan, he never enjoyed violence.

He preferred patience.

Strategy.

Control.

His assistant entered.

"Sir."

"Jonathan has been arrested."

Charles nodded.

"As expected."

"And Gabriel?"

"He betrayed Blackwood."

Charles remained calm.

"Good."

The assistant looked confused.

"Good?"

Charles smiled.

"People reveal their true character only when given freedom."

He looked out across the ocean.

"Gabriel chose correctly."

"What about Amelia?"

Charles set down his teacup.

"She always belonged to the Sterling family."

The assistant hesitated.

"Should we eliminate her?"

Charles looked genuinely disappointed.

"No."

"We've already destroyed enough lives."

At the hospital...

Amelia had finally been discharged from intensive care.

Though still weak, she insisted on walking through the maternity garden outside the hospital.

Fresh air filled her lungs.

For the first time since the gala...

She felt something resembling peace.

Gabriel slowly joined her.

His injured shoulder rested in a sling.

Neither spoke immediately.

Finally...

Gabriel broke the silence.

"I remember your mother."

Amelia looked at him.

"Really?"

He nodded.

"Only one memory."

"I was six."

"I had fallen from a tree."

"I was crying."

"Elizabeth picked me up."

He smiled faintly.

"She told me brave people weren't those who never cried."

"They were the ones who stood up afterward."

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

"That sounds like her."

Gabriel looked toward the flowers.

"I spent my entire life trying to remember where I'd heard kindness before."

"Now I know."

Later that evening...

Nathan Hawthorne requested another meeting.

This time...

With Amelia.

Against everyone's advice...

She agreed.

The prison visitation room felt cold.

Nathan stood as she entered.

He looked thinner.

Older.

Broken.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

Amelia quietly sat across from him.

"Then why ask to see me?"

Nathan swallowed.

"Because I finally understand what I destroyed."

Silence lingered.

"I never loved Vanessa."

"I never loved the money."

"I loved winning."

"And by the time I realized what I'd become..."

"...there was nothing left worth winning."

Amelia looked at the man she had once trusted with her future.

"I spent years believing I wasn't enough."

Nathan lowered his head.

"You were always enough."

"I wasn't."

A guard announced that time was ending.

Nathan looked at Amelia one last time.

"I hope your daughter never meets a man like me."

Amelia stood.

"No."

She answered softly.

"I hope she meets one who learns much earlier."

Without another word...

She walked away.

Leaving the past behind.

Three days later...

The luxury yacht quietly docked at a private harbor before dawn.

Federal agents surrounded the pier.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Charles Hawthorne stepped onto the dock carrying only a leather briefcase.

No bodyguards.

No weapons.

Detective Carter approached cautiously.

"Charles Hawthorne?"

Charles nodded.

"I've been expecting you."

Carter stared.

"You're surrendering?"

"I am."

"Why?"

Charles smiled sadly.

"Because Elizabeth was right."

Carter frowned.

"About what?"

Charles looked toward the rising sun.

"No empire..."

"...lasts forever."

He calmly handed Carter the leather briefcase.

Inside were original Blackwood ledgers dating back thirty years.

Every founder.

Every payment.

Every murder ordered.

Every politician bribed.

Every judge corrupted.

Enough evidence to dismantle what remained of Blackwood forever.

As federal agents placed Charles under arrest...

He quietly asked only one question.

"How is Amelia?"

Carter answered honestly.

"Alive."

Charles closed his eyes with visible relief.

"I've owed Elizabeth that much."

Carter stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Charles smiled...

But before he could answer—

A gunshot rang across the harbor.

Charles staggered backward.

A crimson stain spread across his white shirt.

Chaos erupted.

Agents rushed for cover.

The sniper had vanished.

Charles collapsed into Carter's arms.

With his final strength...

He whispered five words.

"Tell Amelia... I'm sorry."

Then his eyes slowly closed.

Detective Carter looked toward the distant rooftops.

Someone had silenced the last man who knew the complete truth.

But one thing had become clear.

Blackwood had fallen.

Now...

May you like

Only its victims remained to decide what came next.
