Chapter 14: Vincent's Last Secret

Chapter 14: Vincent's Last Secret

The underground chamber became eerily quiet.

Even the emergency alarms seemed distant.

Vincent Moretti sat calmly in his wheelchair, his polished silver cane resting across his knees as if he had arrived for a board meeting instead of a confrontation.

Behind him, six armed men stood perfectly still.

Their rifles remained lowered.

They weren't nervous.

They were waiting.

Vincent smiled warmly.

"My dear Alessandro."

"You've grown into your father."

Alessandro didn't move.

"My father died because of you."

Vincent sighed.

"That is what you've always believed."

"No."

"It is what the evidence proves."

Vincent chuckled softly.

"The evidence?"

"You've spent your entire life reading documents."

"I've spent mine writing history."

Marco stepped between them.

"Enough."

"You're under arrest."

The old man laughed.

"For what?"

"For murder."

"For kidnapping."

"For conspiracy."

"For fraud."

Vincent nodded thoughtfully.

"Wonderful accusations."

He slowly tapped his cane against the concrete floor.

"But accusations require witnesses."

He glanced toward Gabriel.

"And witnesses..."

"...have such short life expectancies."

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

For the first time, he looked ashamed.

Vincent noticed.

"I see regret."

He smiled.

"It doesn't suit you."

Grace instinctively moved closer to Lily.

The twins stood side by side.

Seventeen years apart.

Yet identical in ways that no amount of deception could erase.

Vincent stared at them with cold satisfaction.

"You've finally met."

Grace whispered,

"Why?"

Vincent looked directly at her.

"Because blood is dangerous."

Thomas frowned.

"What does that even mean?"

Vincent slowly stood.

Everyone froze.

For years, the wheelchair had been presented as permanent.

Now...

He rose effortlessly.

There had never been any paralysis.

The wheelchair itself had been another disguise.

Another carefully crafted lie.

Marco's grip tightened on his pistol.

"You've been pretending."

Vincent brushed imaginary dust from his coat.

"People underestimate weak old men."

"I encouraged them."

He walked toward the twins.

Grace instinctively stepped backward.

Lily clung to Alessandro's arm.

Vincent stopped several feet away.

"I never hated children."

"I hated inheritance."

Alessandro stared at him.

"You murdered your own family..."

"...for money?"

Vincent slowly shook his head.

"No."

"For control."

"There is a difference."

He turned toward the old surveillance monitors.

"They all believed the Moretti fortune was measured in bank accounts."

"They were wrong."

He pressed a hidden button beneath one of the monitors.

A steel panel slid open inside the wall.

Behind it...

Rows of antique ledgers appeared.

Leather-bound.

Handwritten.

Dated back more than a century.

Thomas gasped.

"The Founders' Books..."

"We thought they were destroyed."

Vincent smiled.

"They were hidden."

"By me."

He removed the oldest ledger and opened it.

The pages were yellow with age.

Across the first page stood the original Moretti Family Charter.

Signed nearly one hundred years earlier.

Then he pointed toward a paragraph near the bottom.

Alessandro stepped forward and read aloud.

Should the direct bloodline of Isabella Moretti survive, all voting authority, trusts, and family assets shall immediately transfer to her lawful descendants. No board vote may overrule this provision.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Thomas felt dizzy.

"So..."

"If Isabella's daughters are alive..."

"...they legally own everything."

Vincent nodded.

"Exactly."

Marco looked stunned.

"The empire."

"The companies."

"The land."

"The trusts."

"Everything."

Vincent smiled.

"Every last dollar."

Amelia finally understood.

"They didn't fake Vanessa's pregnancy just to create an heir."

"They needed Alessandro to unknowingly cancel Isabella's line."

Vincent applauded slowly.

"Very good."

"Your mother was just as intelligent."

Alessandro's anger boiled over.

"You stole two babies."

"You murdered my father."

"You destroyed countless lives..."

"...just to prevent two innocent girls from inheriting."

Vincent looked almost offended.

"You still don't understand."

He slowly closed the ancient ledger.

"I didn't prevent them from inheriting."

"I protected the empire..."

"...from them."

Grace frowned.

"I've never wanted your money."

Vincent smiled sadly.

"I know."

"Neither did your mother."

"That is exactly why she was dangerous."

Gabriel suddenly spoke.

"Enough."

His voice was stronger than before.

"I'm finished helping you."

Vincent turned.

"So am I."

He snapped his fingers.

One of the armed men immediately raised his rifle toward Gabriel.

Before anyone could react—

A gunshot echoed through the chamber.

Gabriel staggered backward.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Grace screamed.

Lily burst into tears.

Marco fired instinctively.

The underground facility exploded into chaos.

Bullets slammed into concrete.

Emergency lights shattered overhead.

Everyone dove for cover.

Amelia shielded Emma beneath an overturned examination table.

Thomas pulled Lily to safety.

Alessandro tackled Grace to the floor.

Marco exchanged gunfire with Vincent's men.

The entire underground clinic became a battlefield.

Through the smoke...

Vincent calmly walked toward the exit.

Not running.

Not hiding.

As if he had expected this exact moment.

He paused only once.

Looking back at Alessandro.

"You've spent all night asking the wrong questions."

Alessandro shouted,

"What question?"

Vincent smiled.

"The real question was never..."

"'Where is Grace?'"

He opened the blast door.

Smoke poured inside from the burning tunnels.

Then he spoke the words that froze every person alive.

"You should have asked..."

"...who her father really is."

The blast door slammed shut behind him.

Leaving Alessandro, Grace, Lily, Amelia, Marco, Thomas, and the wounded Gabriel staring at one another in stunned silence.

Because if Vincent had been telling the truth...

Then the greatest secret of the Moretti family had not yet been revealed.
