Chapter 2: The Butler's Confession

Chapter 2: The Butler's Confession

Thomas's lips trembled.

The silver tray slipped from his hands, crashing against the polished marble floor with a metallic clang that echoed beneath the crystal chandeliers. Crystal glasses shattered in every direction.

Nobody moved.

Three hundred guests watched the elderly butler as though he had suddenly become the most important man in the mansion.

For thirty-two years, Thomas Bennett had served the Moretti family without a single stain on his record. He had welcomed presidents, billionaires, governors, and foreign dignitaries through these very doors.

Tonight, he looked like a man standing at the edge of an execution.

Alessandro folded his hands behind his back.

"Answer the child."

Thomas swallowed hard.

"I..."

His voice cracked.

"I carried a box."

The ballroom erupted.

Vanessa spun toward him.

"What are you saying?"

Thomas shut his eyes for a moment.

"I carried a storage box from Miss Cole's dressing room."

Vanessa's face drained of color.

"You senile old fool!"

Her scream echoed across the ballroom.

"You've forgotten everything!"

Thomas looked at the floor.

"I wish I had."

Alessandro took one slow step closer.

"What was inside?"

Thomas hesitated.

"I never opened it."

"But..."

He looked toward Vanessa.

"...Miss Cole told me it contained antique decorations that shouldn't remain in her closet during the party."

"When was this?"

"About forty minutes before the guests arrived."

Marco immediately checked his tablet.

"Security footage confirms Mr. Bennett entering the east hallway at 7:18 p.m."

The room grew still again.

Thomas continued.

"Miss Cole was already dressed."

"She told me to carry the box downstairs."

"Where?"

"The old wine cellar."

Vanessa laughed.

A brittle, desperate laugh.

"Wonderful."

"So now we're trusting the memory of an eighty-year-old man?"

Thomas quietly corrected her.

"I'm seventy-one."

The correction somehow made the silence heavier.

Alessandro looked toward Marco.

"Search the cellar."

Marco nodded once.

"Every room."

Within seconds, six members of the security team disappeared through a hidden hallway.

The wait began.

Amelia wanted to leave.

Emma's fever was getting worse.

Her little body leaned heavily against her shoulder.

"Mama..."

The tiny voice barely carried.

"My head hurts."

Amelia kissed her damp forehead.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

"We'll go home soon."

She wasn't sure she believed her own words.

Across the ballroom, several guests quietly slipped out their phones.

Only to discover...

No signal.

Marco noticed.

"The cellular jammers are active."

A nervous murmur swept through the crowd.

One businessman frowned.

"Jammers?"

Marco answered without emotion.

"When Mr. Moretti conducts family business..."

"...nothing leaves the house."

Vanessa suddenly stepped toward Alessandro again.

"This is insanity."

"You've trapped hundreds of people because of a child's fantasy."

His expression never changed.

"If it's a fantasy..."

"...you have nothing to fear."

Those eight words landed harder than any accusation.

Fifteen minutes passed.

The orchestra remained silent.

The champagne had grown warm.

Outside, thunder rolled across the dark sky.

Then footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Marco returned.

Behind him, two security guards carried a large ivory-colored storage box.

Every conversation stopped.

The floral pattern printed along the cardboard sides matched Amelia's memory exactly.

Tiny blue flowers.

Just as Emma had described.

Emma looked up immediately.

"There!"

She pointed excitedly.

"My flower box!"

Amelia's heart nearly stopped.

Marco carefully placed the box in the center of the ballroom.

The shipping tape had already been cut.

"It was hidden beneath old wine crates."

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"Anyone could have put that there."

Marco ignored her.

He slowly lifted the lid.

Inside...

Nothing.

The box was empty.

Several guests sighed in relief.

Vanessa smiled triumphantly.

"You see?"

"An empty box."

"How embarrassing."

A senator chuckled nervously.

"I believe we've all misunderstood—"

"Wait."

Marco reached inside.

His fingers disappeared beneath a sheet of white tissue paper lining the bottom.

He pulled upward.

A folded receipt slid into his hand.

Silence.

He unfolded it carefully.

The logo at the top was immediately recognizable.

MotherBloom Maternity Studio

Specialty Silicone Pregnancy Forms

The purchase date...

Six weeks earlier.

Exactly the date Amelia had remembered.

Vanessa lunged forward.

"That's fake!"

Marco calmly turned the receipt over.

"There is more."

Handwritten in blue ink.

Paid in Full

The ballroom erupted into frantic whispers.

"Oh my God..."

"Seven months?"

"But she announced the pregnancy tonight..."

"How could she already own..."

Nobody finished the sentence.

Because everyone understood.

Alessandro accepted the receipt from Marco.

His eyes remained fixed on the paper.

"So."

He spoke almost to himself.

"You prepared this before you ever told me."

Vanessa hurried toward him.

"No."

"I bought it for charity."

"A costume event."

"A theater donation."

She kept talking faster.

"I've volunteered at children's hospitals."

"It wasn't mine."

"It was—"

"Enough."

One word.

Quiet.

Absolute.

Vanessa fell silent instantly.

Emma suddenly tugged Alessandro's sleeve.

He looked down.

"The pillow's still hiding."

She whispered it like a secret.

Alessandro crouched beside her again.

"Where, sweetheart?"

Emma pointed toward the grand staircase.

"Not in the flower box."

"In the scary room."

Every servant in the mansion froze.

Thomas's eyes widened.

"The old nursery..."

he whispered.

No one had entered the abandoned nursery for almost twelve years.

Not since Alessandro's mother had died.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

Alessandro lifted his gaze toward the dark hallway leading to the locked nursery.

Then he noticed something that made his expression harden.

The antique brass key...

which had always hung beside the portrait of his mother...

was gone.

Someone had entered the room.

May you like

Very recently.

Without his permission.
