Chapter 4: The Letter Meant for a Dead Empire

Chapter 4: The Letter Meant for a Dead Empire
The envelope lay on the polished marble floor.
No one dared touch it.
Not because of the black wax seal.
Not because it had fallen from Vanessa Cole's purse.
But because of the name written across the front in elegant black ink.
For Vincent Moretti. Urgent.
The room suddenly felt colder.
Outside, thunder rolled across the estate, rattling the towering windows of the ballroom.
Alessandro bent down slowly.
His fingers closed around the envelope.
He studied the handwriting.
His face revealed nothing.
But Marco recognized the subtle tightening of his jaw.
Someone was about to lose everything.
Vanessa found her voice again.
"You have no right to open that."
"It isn't yours."
Alessandro looked at her for the first time in several minutes.
"It came from your purse."
"It became my business the moment you carried it into my home."
She stepped forward.
"You don't understand."
"No."
He answered quietly.
"I don't."
"Which is exactly why I'm going to read it."
The black wax seal cracked beneath his thumb.
The ballroom held its breath.
Inside rested only a single sheet of cream-colored stationery.
Alessandro unfolded it.
His eyes moved across the page once.
Then...
They stopped.
For the first time that evening...
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
The kind that cuts deeper than rage.
Marco watched him carefully.
"What does it say?"
Alessandro didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He handed the letter to Marco.
"Read it."
Marco obeyed.
His face darkened with every line.
Without another word, he looked toward the security team.
"Seal every exit."
"They're already sealed."
"Double it."
Eight more guards entered the ballroom.
Several guests exchanged nervous glances.
This was no longer an engagement party.
It had become an internal Moretti investigation.
One elderly judge finally spoke.
"Mr. Moretti..."
"If this concerns family affairs..."
"...perhaps your guests should leave."
Alessandro folded the letter carefully.
"No."
"They stay."
"If someone planned to deceive me tonight..."
"I'd like every witness present."
No one argued.
Amelia stood frozen with Emma sleeping against her shoulder.
The inhaler had stabilized the little girl's breathing, but exhaustion had finally overtaken her.
She slept peacefully.
Completely unaware that an empire was beginning to fracture around her.
Amelia gently brushed damp curls away from Emma's forehead.
Daniel would have smiled.
He always said their daughter could sleep through thunderstorms.
She wondered what he would think if he could see them now.
Three years earlier...
Daniel had stood in their tiny apartment holding a folder stuffed with construction reports.
"This company cuts corners."
"They're going to kill someone."
Amelia remembered laughing nervously.
"Then report them."
"I did."
He looked toward the window.
"They know."
The next morning...
He never came home.
"Mrs. Carter."
Alessandro's voice interrupted her memories.
She looked up immediately.
"Yes...sir?"
"Come with me."
Vanessa exploded.
"Why her?"
Alessandro ignored the question.
"Marco."
"Bring the letter."
"Thomas."
"You're coming too."
The old butler nodded weakly.
They walked through the east hallway toward Alessandro's private study.
Guests watched silently as the heavy oak doors closed behind them.
Inside, the room smelled of leather-bound books, cedar wood, and old whiskey.
Rain tapped softly against floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens.
Marco locked the door.
No one spoke.
Finally...
Alessandro placed the letter on his desk.
"Mrs. Carter."
"You've worked here three years."
"Yes."
"Have you ever met my uncle?"
Amelia hesitated.
"Only twice."
"Very briefly."
"He rarely visits."
Thomas quietly added,
"Mr. Vincent hasn't attended a family gathering in nearly eighteen months."
Alessandro nodded.
"Exactly."
He looked at the letter again.
"So why..."
"...is my fiancée secretly corresponding with him?"
Marco unfolded the page.
"This wasn't written by Miss Cole."
Amelia frowned.
"How do you know?"
"The handwriting belongs to Vincent's attorney."
Marco reached into a filing cabinet.
He removed an old contract.
Placed both pages side by side.
The handwriting matched perfectly.
Every letter.
Every flourish.
Every signature.
Alessandro finally read the contents aloud.
Vincent,
Everything is prepared.
The announcement has been accepted.
Once Alessandro publicly recognizes the pregnancy, the trust amendment can proceed exactly as discussed.
The child does not need to exist for long.
We only require the legal acknowledgment.
By the time anyone discovers the truth...
Control of the estate will already be irreversible.
Silence.
Complete.
Absolute.
Amelia felt her knees weaken.
"The child..."
she whispered.
"There never was one."
Marco looked up.
"No."
"There never needed to be."
Thomas suddenly sat down.
His face had become ghostly pale.
"Oh God..."
Alessandro turned toward him.
"What?"
The old butler stared at the fireplace.
"I remember now."
"Three months ago..."
"I overheard Mr. Vincent arguing on the telephone."
"He kept repeating one sentence."
Thomas looked directly at Alessandro.
"If the boy dies without a legitimate heir..."
"...everything comes back to us."
The study became deadly quiet.
A knock interrupted them.
Marco opened the door.
One of the security officers entered.
"Sir."
"We found something."
"What?"
The guard handed Marco a small velvet jewelry pouch.
"It was hidden inside Miss Cole's dressing table."
Marco emptied the contents onto Alessandro's desk.
A tiny gold key.
An ultrasound photograph.
And...
A memory card.
Alessandro frowned.
"Play it."
Marco inserted the card into the computer.
Static filled the speakers.
Then a hidden camera recording appeared.
The date...
Exactly six weeks earlier.
The location...
Vanessa's private suite.
On the screen, Vanessa stood before a mirror wearing the silicone pregnancy belly beneath her dress.
She smiled.
Turned sideways.
Adjusted the straps.
Then laughed.
A man's voice came from behind the camera.
"Perfect."
"No one will question seven months."
Vanessa smiled into the mirror.
"Especially Alessandro."
Then she asked the question that made every person in the study freeze.
"When he signs the heir acknowledgment..."
"...how long before we arrange his accident?"
The camera slowly tilted.
Capturing the man's reflection in the mirror.
It wasn't Vincent Moretti.
It was someone even closer.
Someone Alessandro had trusted his entire life.
Marco whispered the name first.
"...Gabriel."
Alessandro's lifelong attorney.
May you like
His godfather.
The man who had drafted every legal document for the Moretti empire for the past twenty-five years.
