Chapter 7: The Daughter They Buried Alive

Chapter 7: The Daughter They Buried Alive
The letter slipped from Alessandro's fingers.
It floated onto the nursery floor like a falling feather.
No one moved.
No one even seemed capable of breathing.
Lily looked from one adult to another, confused by the sudden silence.
Finally, in her small voice, she asked,
"Did I do something bad?"
The question shattered whatever composure remained in the room.
Alessandro slowly knelt before the little girl.
His dark eyes searched her face.
Until now, he had seen only a frightened child.
Now...
He truly looked.
The same deep gray eyes as Isabella.
The same delicate curve of the chin.
The same tiny dimple that appeared whenever she frowned.
Features he had not seen in nearly seventeen years.
Features he had buried with his mother.
His chest tightened painfully.
Thomas suddenly burst into tears.
"My God..."
He covered his face with trembling hands.
"I never noticed."
"I should have noticed."
Alessandro looked toward him.
"What are you talking about?"
Thomas pointed at Lily.
"Her eyes."
"Your mother's eyes."
"When Isabella smiled..."
"They looked exactly the same."
Marco quickly picked up the letter and continued reading.
The truth was hidden to protect the Moretti inheritance.
If Vincent fails, this child must never be allowed to inherit.
She cannot be acknowledged while Alessandro remains alive.
Marco stopped.
His hands were shaking.
"There are more pages."
He unfolded another sheet.
The second page contained a timeline.
Five years earlier.
Operation Phoenix
Child removed from St. Gabriel Medical Center.
Death certificate prepared.
Isabella's daughter officially recorded as stillborn.
Nursery sealed.
Public mourning arranged.
Every line was dated.
Every step carefully documented.
Thomas looked as though he might faint.
"Stillborn..."
He whispered the word.
"We buried an empty coffin."
The memory crashed over him.
He remembered the funeral.
The tiny white casket.
The priest.
Isabella's husband weeping over a daughter he believed he had lost.
No one had ever questioned why the casket remained closed.
Vincent had insisted.
"The child deserves dignity."
Now...
The truth became horrifying.
There had been no body.
Alessandro slowly stood.
His face had become unreadable.
"When was my mother pregnant?"
Thomas stared at him.
"You don't remember?"
"I was seventeen."
"My father died six months later."
"So much happened."
Thomas nodded sadly.
"Your mother discovered she was pregnant at forty-two."
"She called the baby..."
His voice broke.
"...her miracle."
Lily quietly tugged Alessandro's sleeve.
"Mister?"
He looked down.
She held out the worn teddy bear.
"You look sad."
"You can hug Rosie."
The room fell silent again.
Alessandro accepted the old stuffed bear.
Its fur had faded from years of being held.
A tiny stitched tag remained attached to one ear.
Gifted with love. Grandma Isabella.
Alessandro froze.
He remembered buying it.
Seventeen years ago.
He had been a college freshman.
He bought the teddy bear as a joke.
His mother laughed for ten minutes before placing it in the baby's nursery.
"This will be her first friend."
She had never known...
It actually became one.
Marco continued searching the room.
Inside an antique dresser, he found dozens of photographs.
Some showed Lily celebrating birthdays.
Others showed Christmas mornings.
She was never alone.
Vincent appeared in almost every picture.
Gabriel stood beside him in many.
Vanessa appeared only occasionally.
Always smiling.
Always pretending.
One photograph made Marco stop.
He handed it to Alessandro.
It showed Vincent holding newborn Lily inside a hospital room.
The date stamped in the corner matched Isabella's official delivery date.
Another man stood beside Vincent.
A doctor.
Marco flipped the photograph over.
A handwritten note covered the back.
Dr. Michael Reeves
St. Gabriel Medical Center
Paid in full
Amelia gasped.
She knew that hospital.
Daniel had mentioned it.
Only once.
The night before he died.
"He kept repeating one doctor's name."
She whispered.
"Michael Reeves."
Everyone turned toward her.
"He said..."
"...if anything happened to him..."
"...find Dr. Reeves."
Marco looked stunned.
"Daniel investigated him?"
Amelia nodded slowly.
"I never knew why."
Everything connected.
The construction company.
The hospital.
Vincent.
Gabriel.
Vanessa.
They weren't separate crimes.
They were pieces of the same machine.
Suddenly...
The nursery lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then...
The entire mansion went dark.
Someone screamed downstairs.
Emergency lights failed to activate.
Only lightning illuminated the room through the windows.
Marco instantly drew his pistol.
"Everyone stay where you are."
His radio crackled.
Then died.
The signal had been cut.
Outside...
An engine roared to life.
Alessandro rushed toward the window.
Three black SUVs sped away from the rear service gate.
Their headlights disappeared into the storm.
Marco cursed under his breath.
"The backup generators."
"They've been disabled."
"This wasn't a power outage."
"It was planned."
A loud crash echoed from downstairs.
Glass shattered.
Then came the sound of running footsteps.
Heavy.
Fast.
Professional.
Not frightened guests.
Trained men.
Marco turned toward Alessandro.
"They're here."
"Who?"
"The cleanup team."
"They've come to erase everything."
Before anyone could react...
A single gunshot echoed through the dark mansion.
Then another.
And another.
Thomas whispered in horror,
"They're killing the witnesses."
At that exact moment, Lily looked toward the hidden wall behind the nursery bookshelf.
In a frightened voice, she said,
"They always make me hide in there when the bad men come."
She pointed at the carved wooden bookshelf.
"There’s a secret room."

Then she added the sentence that made Alessandro's blood run cold.
"Grandpa Vincent says nobody can find Daddy's papers inside."
