Chapter 8: The Hidden Chamber

Chapter 8: The Hidden Chamber

The gunfire echoed again.

Closer this time.

One shot.

Then another.

The sound ricocheted through the marble halls of the Moretti mansion, followed by the shattering of another chandelier somewhere below.

Guests screamed.

Someone cried for security.

Someone else prayed.

Inside the nursery, however, Alessandro's attention remained fixed on Lily.

"There are papers?" he asked.

The little girl nodded.

"Daddy's papers."

She walked toward the enormous mahogany bookshelf built into the far wall.

It stretched from floor to ceiling, filled with old leather-bound books that hadn't been touched in years.

Lily pointed to the third shelf.

"The blue bird."

Everyone looked.

Among hundreds of carved flowers decorating the wooden frame...

A tiny blue bird had been carved into one corner.

Almost invisible.

Lily reached up.

She pressed the bird's beak.

A soft metallic click echoed through the nursery.

Then...

The entire bookshelf shuddered.

Slowly...

It swung outward.

Cold air drifted from the darkness beyond.

Thomas stumbled backward.

"My God..."

"There really is a hidden room."

Alessandro switched on the flashlight attached to Marco's pistol.

The narrow beam pierced the darkness.

Stone walls.

Dust-covered shelves.

An old oak desk.

The secret chamber had probably remained untouched for decades.

Yet someone had clearly been using it recently.

Fresh footprints covered the floor.

Marco entered first.

Two security officers followed behind him.

"Clear."

Alessandro stepped inside.

Amelia remained near the entrance, holding Emma, while Lily clung quietly to her hand.

The hidden room smelled of cedar, old paper, and machine oil.

Not mold.

Someone had maintained it carefully.

Against the far wall stood an enormous iron safe.

Unlike everything else in the room...

The safe looked modern.

Its digital keypad still glowed faintly.

Someone had installed it within the last few years.

Marco examined it.

"No fingerprints."

"Wiped clean."

Alessandro looked toward Lily.

"Do you know the numbers?"

She smiled proudly.

"Grandpa made me remember."

She slowly pressed the keys.

0...

7...

1...

9...

6...

3...

The lock beeped.

Then unlocked.

Thomas gasped.

"July nineteenth..."

Alessandro whispered.

"My birthday."

The heavy steel door swung open.

Inside rested dozens of thick folders.

External hard drives.

Flash drives.

Cash.

Gold bars.

And one sealed wooden box.

Across its lid, engraved in silver letters, were only four words.

Property of Enzo Moretti.

Alessandro's father's name.

He carefully opened the box.

Inside lay an old leather journal.

His father's handwriting covered every page.

The first entry was dated twenty-one years earlier.

The night before his murder.

Alessandro's hands trembled.

He began reading aloud.

If you are reading this, then I have either disappeared... or someone I trusted finally betrayed me.

Silence.

He turned the page.

Vincent has been stealing from the family for years.

Gabriel helped him hide everything.

Marco slowly looked up.

"They've been planning this for decades."

Another folder caught Amelia's attention.

It was labeled:

HAWTHORNE

Her breathing stopped.

She immediately opened it.

Engineering reports.

Construction permits.

Inspection photographs.

Invoices.

Every page carried official government stamps.

Daniel's handwriting covered the margins.

Tears filled Amelia's eyes.

"He found everything..."

She whispered.

"He really found everything."

Marco walked over.

"What is it?"

She handed him one report.

Daniel had circled a series of forged signatures.

Beside them he had written one sentence.

These approvals came from Gabriel Rossi's office.

Marco looked stunned.

Gabriel hadn't merely protected Vincent.

He had also protected the construction fraud that killed Daniel.

Alessandro quietly watched Amelia.

For the first time that evening...

He understood why fate had placed her in his house.

She wasn't simply a maid.

She had unknowingly carried part of the truth for three years.

Another gunshot echoed outside.

Closer.

A security guard shouted from the hallway.

"They've breached the east entrance!"

Marco immediately grabbed his radio.

Still dead.

"They jammed every frequency."

Suddenly...

One of the hard drives began blinking.

A tiny green light.

Marco frowned.

"Battery-powered."

"It shouldn't still have power."

Alessandro picked it up.

Attached to the drive was a yellow sticky note.

In Enzo Moretti's handwriting.

Play this first.

Marco quickly connected the drive to a laptop sitting on the desk.

A video file appeared.

Recorded twenty-one years ago.

They pressed play.

Enzo Moretti appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

His face carried bruises.

Behind him was the very same hidden room.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then Vincent succeeded."

Alessandro felt his throat tighten.

His father continued.

"I've discovered that my brother intends to murder me."

Thomas covered his mouth.

The room became utterly silent.

"I don't know when."

"I don't know how."

"But I know Gabriel is helping him."

Enzo paused.

Then smiled sadly.

"My son..."

"If you're alive..."

"...never stop looking."

"You'll find the truth where nobody thinks to search."

He reached toward the camera.

Holding up a faded photograph.

Alessandro froze.

The woman beside his father wasn't his mother.

It was Amelia.

No...

Not Amelia.

Someone who looked exactly like her.

Twenty-five years younger.

Amelia stepped closer.

The photograph slipped from Alessandro's hand.

She stared at the smiling young woman.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same auburn hair.

Even the tiny birthmark near her left eyebrow.

Impossible.

Thomas whispered first.

"That's..."

Amelia finished the sentence.

"My mother."

She hadn't seen her mother's face since she was six years old.

Her mother had disappeared shortly afterward.

Police said she had abandoned the family.

Now...

She was standing beside Enzo Moretti in a secret photograph.

At the bottom of the picture, someone had written in blue ink:

Evelyn Carter — Chief Financial Auditor

Then, beneath it...

A final sentence.

Killed after uncovering the missing inheritance accounts.

Amelia's knees nearly gave way.

Daniel hadn't been the first member of her family to uncover the Moretti conspiracy.

Her mother had discovered it...

Twenty-five years earlier.
