Chapter 6: The Girl in the Nursery

Chapter 6: The Girl in the Nursery
The ballroom fell into stunned silence.
Every face turned toward the top of the grand staircase.
The little girl didn't move.
She stood beneath Isabella Moretti's portrait wearing faded pink pajamas that looked two sizes too small. A white teddy bear hung loosely from one hand.
Rain flashed against the tall windows behind her.
For a heartbeat, she looked almost unreal.
Then she blinked.
Very slowly.
She was real.
Emma smiled weakly from Amelia's shoulder.
"There she is."
Amelia's blood ran cold.
"Emma..."
"What little sister?"
Emma pointed with one tiny finger.
"The one who plays tea party."
"She cries sometimes."
"I give her cookies."
The room seemed to stop breathing.
Amelia stared at her daughter.
"What are you talking about?"
Emma frowned.
"The nursery."
"The pretty room."
"The little sister says she's lonely."
Thomas nearly collapsed.
"No..."
His whisper cracked.
"That's impossible."
Alessandro looked toward him.
"Explain."
The old butler's hands trembled violently.
"The nursery has been locked for twelve years."
"No child has ever entered that room."
The girl at the top of the stairs suddenly took one cautious step forward.
She looked frightened.
Not dangerous.
Her large brown eyes scanned the crowd before stopping on Alessandro.
Then, almost instinctively...
She hid behind the banister.
As though she expected to be punished for being seen.
Marco spoke quietly into his radio.
"Nobody approaches."
"I'll go."
Alessandro stopped him.
"No."
"I will."
He began climbing the staircase one slow step at a time.
The mansion remained completely silent.
No guest dared interrupt.
Halfway up...
Alessandro stopped.
"So you don't get scared..."
He knelt on one knee.
Exactly as he had done before Emma.
"My name is Alessandro."
The little girl clutched the teddy bear tighter.
"I know."
Her voice was barely audible.
Everyone downstairs heard it.
"You do?"
She nodded.
"Grandpa Vincent shows me your picture."
The words struck like lightning.
Marco looked sharply toward Alessandro.
Vincent.
Again.
Everything was leading back to Vincent Moretti.
The girl looked around nervously.
"Is he angry?"
"Who?"
"Grandpa Vincent."
She lowered her head.
"He says I have to stay quiet."
"If I'm quiet..."
"...Mama gets money."
Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.
Vanessa's face turned completely white.
Alessandro reached the top of the staircase.
He kept his distance.
"What's your name?"
The child hesitated.
"Lily."
"How old are you?"
She held up four fingers.
"I'm almost five."
Thomas whispered in disbelief.
"Five..."
Alessandro's heartbeat quickened.
Five years.
Vincent had been hiding a child inside the Moretti estate for almost five years.
How?
Why?
"Where's your mama?"
Lily looked toward Vanessa.
The entire ballroom followed her gaze.
Vanessa screamed.
"No!"
"She's lying!"
"I've never seen that child before!"
Lily frowned in confusion.
"Mama?"
She pointed directly at Vanessa.
"You said not to call you Mommy when people are here."
The ballroom erupted.
Several guests stepped backward.
Others stared openly at Vanessa.
A senator muttered,
"My God..."
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
"I don't know her!"
"I swear!"
Lily looked hurt.
"You said pretending keeps us safe."
"You promised."
"You promised we'd live together forever after Uncle Alessandro had the baby."
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Amelia held Emma tightly.
She realized her daughter hadn't imagined anything.
Emma really had met Lily.
While Amelia cleaned upstairs...
The two children had somehow found each other.
Nobody had noticed.
Marco quietly addressed Lily.
"Sweetheart..."
"Where do you sleep?"
She pointed toward the old nursery.
"In my room."
"The pretty room."
"The lady in the picture watches me."
She looked up at Isabella's portrait and smiled.
"I say goodnight to Grandma every night."
Thomas covered his mouth.
Tears filled his eyes.
He had dusted that portrait every week.
Never once imagining...
A child had been living only a few feet away.
Alessandro slowly reached for the antique nursery door.
The brass lock clicked open.
The heavy door creaked inward.
A stale smell drifted into the hallway.
Dust.
Old wood.
Baby powder.
But beneath it...
Something else.
Fresh laundry detergent.
Someone had been living there recently.
The room looked untouched at first glance.
White crib.
Rocking chair.
Curtains embroidered with tiny stars.
Then Alessandro noticed the changes.
A child's coloring books.
Tiny pink sneakers beside the bed.
Fresh fruit on a bedside table.
Medicine bottles.
A small television hidden inside an antique cabinet.
This wasn't an abandoned nursery.
It had become a secret bedroom.
Marco began photographing everything.
Each drawer.
Each shelf.
Each toy.
Then he opened the wardrobe.
Inside hung dozens of little dresses.
Neatly pressed.
Each tagged with handwritten labels.
Lily – Age 2
Lily – Age 3
Lily – Age 4
Someone had carefully documented her entire childhood.
One of the drawers contained a thick medical file.
Marco opened it.
His eyes widened.
"Sir..."
He handed the documents to Alessandro.
Birth certificate.
Vaccination records.
Pediatric examinations.
Everything appeared authentic.
Except...
The mother's name had been blacked out.
The father's name...
Left completely blank.
Lily quietly walked over to a small wooden chest beneath the window.
"I have drawings."
She opened it proudly.
Hundreds of crayon pictures filled the box.
Most showed the same people.
A smiling woman.
Lily.
A tall man with silver hair.
And another man wearing a dark suit.
Lily pointed happily.
"That's Grandpa Vincent."
Then she pointed at the second man.
"And that's Uncle Gabriel."
Every adult in the room stiffened.
Even Lily's innocent drawings connected the same conspiracy.
As Alessandro turned another page in the medical file...
A folded envelope slipped onto the floor.
Unlike the previous letter...
This one was addressed to only one person.
To Lily
Open on your fifth birthday.
Alessandro carefully unfolded it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Gabriel Rossi.
He read the first sentence aloud.
"If you're reading this, it means Vanessa has failed, and Alessandro Moretti has learned the truth..."
No one moved.
Then Alessandro read the second line.
His face lost all color.
May you like
Because the letter contained a revelation no one in the room had expected.
"...You are not Vanessa Cole's daughter. You are the only surviving child of Isabella Moretti."
