Chapter 3: The Locked Nursery

Chapter 3: The Locked Nursery

No one spoke.

The antique brass key had always hung beneath the oil portrait of Isabella Moretti, Alessandro's late mother. Every servant knew one rule better than any other:

No one entered the nursery.

Not after Isabella died.

Not after Alessandro had locked the door himself twelve years earlier.

Yet tonight...

The key was gone.

Alessandro slowly walked toward the portrait.

His polished shoes echoed across the marble floor.

Every guest instinctively stepped aside.

He stared at the empty brass hook for several long seconds.

Then he turned toward Thomas.

"Who removed it?"

The old butler looked horrified.

"I...I don't know, sir."

"No one has touched that key in years."

Marco stepped beside Alessandro.

"The hallway camera."

Alessandro nodded once.

"Now."

Within moments, security technicians wheeled a portable monitor into the ballroom.

Guests crowded around, whispering.

The footage began.

7:52 p.m.

The hallway outside the nursery appeared empty.

7:56.

A maid carrying fresh flowers passed by.

7:58.

Nothing.

Then...

8:11 p.m.

A woman entered the hallway wearing a long white evening gown.

Her face was partially hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat.

She stopped beneath Isabella Moretti's portrait.

Reached upward.

Removed the brass key.

The ballroom collectively inhaled.

The woman unlocked the nursery.

Disappeared inside.

The door closed behind her.

Marco paused the video.

"Zoom."

The image sharpened.

A sapphire bracelet sparkled beneath the woman's sleeve.

Amelia recognized it immediately.

So did dozens of guests.

Vanessa wore that bracelet every day.

It had appeared in countless magazine photographs.

A gift from Alessandro on their second anniversary.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Lots of women own sapphire bracelets."

Marco resumed the video.

Exactly six minutes later...

The same woman emerged carrying a large white shopping bag.

The bag sagged heavily as though something soft filled the bottom.

She locked the nursery again.

Hung the key back.

Walked calmly away.

The ballroom remained silent.

Then Marco zoomed once more.

The key...

Never returned to the hook.

Instead...

The woman slipped it into her evening clutch.

Vanessa suddenly clapped sarcastically.

"Wonderful editing."

"Amazing."

"You expect everyone to believe blurry security footage?"

Alessandro didn't answer.

Instead, he extended one hand.

"Your purse."

She blinked.

"What?"

"Give it to me."

A dangerous smile spread across her face.

"No."

"You don't trust me?"

"I don't."

Three simple words.

Vanessa stared at him.

She had expected hesitation.

She had expected doubt.

Instead...

She found certainty.

One of her friends hurried forward.

"This is humiliating."

Another woman added,

"Alessandro, she's your fiancée."

He looked toward them.

"If she's innocent..."

"...her purse will prove it."

No one answered.

Vanessa slowly stepped backward.

One step.

Then another.

Her fingers tightened around the white designer clutch hanging from her wrist.

Amelia noticed something strange.

Vanessa wasn't crying anymore.

She was calculating.

Exactly the way trapped animals studied fences.

Emma suddenly coughed.

A harsh, painful cough.

Amelia immediately knelt beside her.

Emma's breathing sounded tight.

Too tight.

"Mama..."

"My chest hurts."

Fear shot through Amelia.

Not now.

Please...

Not tonight.

Emma suffered from asthma.

The rainy weather always made it worse.

Amelia reached into her canvas bag.

Searching desperately.

Inhaler.

Medicine.

Where—

Her fingers froze.

The inhaler wasn't there.

Her heart stopped.

Impossible.

She had packed it before leaving home.

She remembered checking twice.

Alessandro noticed her expression immediately.

"What is it?"

"My daughter's inhaler..."

Amelia whispered.

"It's gone."

Emma wheezed again.

Her little shoulders struggled with every breath.

Panic spread through Amelia.

"No..."

"No..."

She emptied the entire bag onto the marble floor.

Juice box.

Rabbit.

Medicine bottle.

Sweater.

Crayons.

No inhaler.

Marco immediately spoke into his radio.

"Medical team."

"Now."

Within seconds, two emergency physicians employed by the Moretti family entered the ballroom carrying equipment.

One listened to Emma's breathing.

"Asthma attack."

"We need her inhaler immediately."

Amelia's hands shook violently.

"I packed it."

"I swear."

Emma suddenly pointed toward Vanessa.

"The pretty lady took it."

Silence.

Again.

Vanessa stared at the child in disbelief.

"Excuse me?"

Emma nodded weakly.

"When Mama talked to Mr. Thomas..."

"The pretty lady opened Mama's bag."

Amelia looked up.

Her mind raced.

There had been a moment.

Only seconds.

When she had stepped away after Thomas confessed.

Her bag had rested on a nearby chair.

Unattended.

Marco turned toward two security guards.

"Search Miss Cole."

Vanessa exploded.

"You can't be serious!"

"This child keeps inventing stories!"

One guard remained still.

"Miss Cole."

"The purse."

She refused.

The second guard stepped forward.

"Please cooperate."

Vanessa suddenly hurled the clutch across the ballroom.

It struck a marble column.

The clasp burst open.

Lipstick.

Perfume.

Keys.

A compact mirror.

And...

A small blue children's inhaler.

It slid across the polished marble.

Stopping directly at Alessandro's feet.

No one breathed.

Amelia stared at it.

Emma smiled weakly.

"My medicine."

One of the doctors rushed forward, grabbed the inhaler, checked the label.

He looked up immediately.

"It's hers."

He administered two quick puffs.

Emma slowly began breathing easier.

Amelia wrapped both arms around her daughter, tears streaming down her face.

Alessandro never looked away from Vanessa.

His voice became frighteningly calm.

"You stole medicine..."

"...from a sick child."

Vanessa shook her head frantically.

"No!"

"I've never seen that inhaler!"

"Someone planted it!"

No one moved.

No one defended her.

Even her closest friends had quietly stepped away.

Marco bent down to retrieve the purse.

As he lifted it...

Something else slipped from a hidden compartment.

A folded envelope.

Cream-colored.

Sealed with black wax.

Across the front, written in elegant handwriting, were only five words.

For Vincent Moretti. Urgent.

Alessandro's expression changed for the first time that evening.

Vincent Moretti.

His uncle.

The only man who would inherit control of the Moretti empire...

if Alessandro died without an heir.

The ballroom suddenly understood.

Perhaps...

This had never been about a fake pregnancy.

May you like

It had been the opening move...

of a far more dangerous conspiracy.
