Chapter 12: The Girl in the Tunnel

Chapter 12: The Girl in the Tunnel

The voice echoed again.

"Help me..."

Soft.

Weak.

Frightened.

It drifted through the stone passage hidden behind the nursery like a whisper carried by the wind.

Everyone froze.

Lily tightened her grip on Amelia's hand.

"I know that voice."

Alessandro looked at her.

"You do?"

She nodded.

"I hear her cry at night."

Marco immediately raised his flashlight.

The beam disappeared into the narrow tunnel.

Only darkness answered.

Another faint sob echoed somewhere ahead.

Not close.

Not far.

Just enough to keep them moving.

"Stay together," Marco ordered.

"Nobody separates."

Two surviving security officers moved to the front.

Alessandro walked directly behind them.

Thomas supported Amelia as she carried Emma.

Lily refused to let go of Alessandro's hand.

The hidden passage descended beneath the mansion.

Every step felt colder than the last.

The walls were lined with old electrical wiring and forgotten water pipes.

Some sections looked more than fifty years old.

Others had been renovated recently.

Someone had spent enormous amounts of money maintaining these tunnels.

They weren't abandoned.

They were being used.

After nearly two hundred feet...

The corridor split into two directions.

One path sloped downward.

The other led upward.

Marco examined the dusty floor.

"There."

Fresh footprints.

Small.

Bare feet.

Another set...

Large military boots.

Very recent.

Lily pointed toward the downward tunnel.

"She cries down there."

Then she whispered something that chilled everyone.

"Grandpa says never open the red door."

They continued deeper underground.

The air became damp.

The smell of concrete mixed with disinfectant.

Hospital disinfectant.

Alessandro immediately noticed it.

"This place wasn't built as storage."

Marco nodded.

"No."

"It was converted."

Suddenly...

The tunnel opened into a massive underground chamber.

Rows of steel shelves filled the room.

Medical supplies.

Hospital beds.

Wheelchairs.

IV stands.

Refrigerators marked with pharmaceutical labels.

Everything appeared organized.

Operational.

As though someone had built a secret clinic beneath the Moretti estate.

Thomas stared in disbelief.

"My God..."

"This wasn't here."

"I've worked in this house forty years."

"I never knew."

Marco quietly answered,

"Because they never wanted anyone to know."

One wall displayed dozens of surveillance monitors.

Most had gone black after the power failure.

But three still functioned.

One showed the burning west garden.

Another showed armed men moving through the main ballroom.

The third...

Displayed the nursery.

Empty.

Whoever operated this facility had been watching every room in the mansion.

Alessandro approached a metal desk.

Patient files lay scattered across it.

Most were coded by numbers instead of names.

But one folder remained open.

Across the cover was written:

Patient G

He slowly opened it.

Inside were seventeen years of medical records.

Height.

Weight.

Blood tests.

Vaccinations.

Psychological evaluations.

Every birthday documented.

Grace had never disappeared.

She had been imprisoned.

Raised as a patient.

Not as a child.

Amelia felt sick.

"They kept records..."

"For seventeen years."

Marco turned another page.

Medication schedules.

Isolation periods.

Behavior reports.

One physician had written:

Subject continues asking about her mother.

Another entry:

Do not allow mirrors after emotional episodes.

Another:

Identity reinforcement successful.

"What identity?"

Alessandro asked.

Marco turned the next page.

A single sentence appeared.

Patient believes her name is Anna Blake.

Grace had never known who she really was.

Suddenly...

A metal door slammed somewhere deeper inside the underground complex.

The frightened voice cried out again.

"Please!"

"Don't leave me!"

This time...

It was unmistakably real.

Marco motioned toward the sound.

The team hurried through another corridor.

One locked steel door stood at the end.

Across it, bright red paint formed a warning.

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

Below it...

A biometric scanner.

Lily stepped forward.

"This is the red door."

Marco examined the lock.

"It's electronically sealed."

"We'll need explosives."

Alessandro shook his head.

"No time."

He searched the nearby control panel.

Nothing.

Then Lily quietly reached into the pocket of her teddy bear.

Everyone stared.

She pulled out a small silver access card.

"Grandpa gave me this."

"He said if I was ever lonely..."

"...I could visit my sister."

Silence filled the corridor.

Alessandro slowly accepted the card.

His hands trembled.

He inserted it into the scanner.

ACCESS GRANTED

The heavy steel door slowly slid open.

Inside...

A bright white medical room came into view.

One hospital bed.

One desk.

One locked bookshelf.

A television bolted to the ceiling.

The room looked more like a prison than a bedroom.

The bed was empty.

The windowless walls were covered with pencil drawings.

Hundreds of them.

Every drawing showed the same two girls holding hands.

One always stood inside a house.

The other remained outside.

Each drawing carried the same sentence written in childish handwriting.

Find Lily.

Then Amelia noticed movement.

Behind another sheet of reinforced glass.

There was a second room.

A young girl sat curled into a corner.

Long dark hair covered her face.

She wore plain gray clothing with no shoes.

She couldn't have been older than seventeen.

As the glass door opened...

She slowly lifted her head.

Gray eyes.

The same gray eyes Isabella Moretti had in every photograph.

Lily gasped.

"Grace..."

The girl stared silently.

Then tears rolled down her cheeks.

In a trembling voice, she whispered,

"You remembered me."

Before anyone could reach her...

Every alarm inside the underground facility suddenly activated.

Red emergency lights flooded the corridors.

A computerized announcement echoed through the complex.

SECURITY BREACH DETECTED.

CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL INITIATED.

Heavy steel doors began slamming shut throughout the underground tunnels.

Marco looked toward the only exit.

It was already closing.

Then, through the narrowing gap, a tall silhouette appeared.

Perfectly tailored suit.

Silver hair.

Calm smile.

Gabriel Rossi.

He stepped into the corridor alone, slowly removing his leather gloves.

He looked directly at Alessandro.

Then at Grace.

Finally, he smiled.

"I see you've found the child we spent seventeen years hiding."

He took one more step forward.

May you like

"And now..."

"...none of you can leave alive."
