Chapter 10: The Second Bloodline

Chapter 10: The Second Bloodline
The hooded stranger took one slow step into the archive.
The emergency lights reflected off the silver Whitmore signet ring.
Nathan Mercer did not move.
For the first time since Evelyn had seen him again, uncertainty crossed his face.
"You shouldn't be here," Nathan said quietly.
The stranger lowered the hood.
A man in his early forties looked back at them.
His dark hair was streaked with silver at the temples, and his calm gray eyes carried a familiar intensity.
Evelyn stared.
She had never met him.
Yet something about his face reminded her of Arthur Whitmore.
Especially the eyes.
The man offered a respectful nod.
"My name is Daniel Whitmore."
The room fell silent.
Evelyn instinctively tightened her grip on the leather folder.
"The name in the file..."
Daniel nodded.
"It belongs to me."
Nathan slowly exhaled.
"So Arthur finally decided to tell her."
"He tried," Daniel replied.
"He just ran out of time."
For several long moments, no one spoke.
The only sound was the distant alarm echoing through the underground corridors.
Above ground, Marcus Doyle and Harold Alder finally reached the reinforced partition.
Security officers cut through the bent steel using hydraulic tools.
Marcus listened carefully.
"I can hear voices."
Harold looked at the cracked barrier.
"Then they're still alive."
He turned to his team.
"No weapons."
"If Arthur trusted these people once..."
"...we're going to hear them first."
Inside the archive...
Daniel slowly removed his ring and placed it on the table.
"I didn't come to take the company."
Evelyn didn't answer.
"You have every reason not to believe me."
"I do."
Daniel gave a small, understanding smile.
"My mother was Arthur Whitmore's eldest child."
"He hid us after she refused to let the family fortune define her life."
Nathan nodded.
"Arthur feared his rivals would use his children against him."
"So he separated the branches of the family."
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"You grew up carrying the Whitmore name."
"I grew up pretending it didn't exist."
Evelyn opened the family tree again.
The dates matched.
The signatures matched.
Even Harold had confirmed the handwriting belonged to Arthur.
"So..."
She said carefully,
"We're cousins."
Daniel nodded once.
"Yes."
The revelation hung heavily in the room.
For years, Evelyn believed she was the last Whitmore.
Now she wasn't.
At corporate headquarters...
Dominic sat alone in the boardroom, replaying old memories.
Another image surfaced.
He was sixteen.
His father stood beside Arthur Whitmore in a garden.
Arthur handed Richard Hale a sealed envelope.
Richard looked shaken.
"I can't ask my son to carry this."
Arthur replied,
"I'm asking you to give him a choice."
The memory faded before Dominic could hear anything else.
He stood abruptly.
"What is happening to me?"
Just then, Harold's assistant entered the boardroom.
"Mr. Hale."
"Yes?"
"There's something addressed to you."
She handed him a small wooden box.
Dominic's heart nearly stopped.
The worn oak surface...
The brass latch...
It was identical to the box his father had given him years ago.
He slowly opened it.
Inside rested only one brass key.
And a folded note.
The handwriting belonged to Richard Hale.
If you're reading this, Arthur trusted you more than he trusted me. Find Evelyn before they do.
Back inside Project Lighthouse...
Nathan walked toward another cabinet.
"We're running out of time."
He unlocked a hidden drawer.
Instead of contracts or ledgers...
It contained dozens of cassette tapes.
Each carefully labeled by year.
Daniel looked surprised.
"He kept all of them?"
Nathan nodded.
"Arthur recorded private briefings every month."
Lillian's voice suddenly echoed from the other side of the damaged partition.
"Nathan!"
"We're coming through!"
Nathan looked toward Evelyn.
"Good."
"She deserves to hear this too."
He selected one tape.
The label read:
November 12 – Final Instructions
Minutes later...
Everyone gathered around the old tape recorder.
Marcus.
Harold.
Lillian.
Daniel.
Nathan.
And Evelyn.
The recording began.
Arthur Whitmore's familiar voice filled the archive.
"If this recording is playing..."
"...then the company has survived."
A brief pause.
"Whether my family has..."
"...I do not know."
Everyone listened in complete silence.
"To whoever is sitting beside Evelyn..."
"Protect her."
"She has always believed the best in people."
Arthur chuckled softly.
"That will one day become both her greatest strength..."
"...and her greatest weakness."
Evelyn smiled sadly.
It sounded exactly like him.
Then Arthur's tone changed.
Serious.
Measured.
"There is one final matter."
"Richard Hale volunteered to become the guardian of something more valuable than this company."
Dominic's father.
Everyone exchanged startled glances.
Arthur continued.
"He agreed to protect..."
The recording suddenly dissolved into loud static.
The tape jammed.
The machine stopped.
Harold quickly removed the cassette.
The magnetic tape had been burned.
Not torn.
Burned.
As though someone had deliberately destroyed only those final seconds.
Nathan stared at the damaged tape in disbelief.
"They've been inside this archive before."
Daniel nodded grimly.
"And they knew exactly what to erase."
Marcus's radio crackled.
"Chief."
"What is it?"
"We've searched the maintenance tunnels."
"Nothing."
"No one entered."
"No one left."
Marcus frowned.
"Then who triggered the alarm?"
The officer hesitated.
"Sir..."
"It wasn't a person."
"It was a timed mechanism."
The room fell quiet.
Whoever had planned this wanted everyone to gather here...
At the exact same moment.
Daniel slowly looked toward Evelyn.
"I think we're finally asking the right question."
She met his eyes.
"Which is?"
Daniel glanced at the damaged tape.
"We've spent two days looking for the person stealing Whitmore Holdings."
He paused.
"But what if the company was never the real target?"
At that exact moment...
A red warning light illuminated above the archive entrance.
An automated voice echoed through the underground chamber.
Executive Transfer Protocol Activated.
Harold's face turned pale.
"No..."
Nathan whispered,
"It can't be."
Evelyn looked around the room.
"What does that mean?"
Harold answered in a strained voice.
"It means..."
"...someone has just attempted to transfer control of Whitmore Holdings."
"And they used Arthur Whitmore's highest-level authorization."
The impossible had happened.
Someone was trying to seize the empire...
May you like
Using the authority of a man who had been dead for twelve years.
