Chapter 11: The Ghost Authorization

Chapter 11: The Ghost Authorization
The red warning light continued to flash above the archive entrance.
Its mechanical voice repeated the same message every ten seconds.
Executive Transfer Protocol Activated.
No one moved.
Harold Alder was the first to break the silence.
"That authorization should be impossible."
Nathan Mercer nodded grimly.
"It is."
"There were only two master credentials capable of triggering that protocol."
Harold answered automatically.
"Arthur Whitmore's..."
"...and the Chair's."
Every eye turned toward Evelyn.
She shook her head.
"I didn't authorize anything."
Lillian looked at the monitor built into the archive wall.
"Then someone forged Arthur's credentials."
Nathan corrected her.
"No."
"They're not forged."
"They're authentic."
Marcus immediately connected his secure tablet to the archive network.
Lines of encrypted data raced across the screen.
"Transfer request originated..."
He stopped.
His expression changed.
"Where?"
Harold asked.
Marcus looked up.
"It originated from inside this hotel."
"Executive Level."
"Less than thirty seconds ago."
Daniel frowned.
"Can you identify the terminal?"
Marcus enlarged the map.
A blinking red dot appeared.
Location:
Arthur Whitmore's Private Office.
Everyone stared in disbelief.
Harold whispered,
"But we all left that office together."
Marcus nodded.
"Apparently..."
"...someone stayed behind."
At corporate headquarters, Dominic finally unlocked the wooden box completely.
Hidden beneath the brass key was a folded photograph.
It showed Richard Hale standing beside Arthur Whitmore during the construction of the Sterling Crown.
Across the bottom, Arthur had written:
'Trust is earned twice—once by choice, once by sacrifice.'
Dominic turned the picture over.
Another handwritten sentence appeared.
If Evelyn ever doubts you, show her this photograph.
He frowned.
"My father knew Evelyn?"
Nothing about his marriage suddenly made sense anymore.
Back inside the archive...
Nathan moved toward an old communication console.
"This room still has an isolated connection."
"It can't be hacked from outside."
He activated the monitor.
The hotel's internal security cameras appeared.
Marcus searched Arthur's office.
Empty.
The hallway.
Empty.
Then...
A hidden infrared camera activated automatically.
A figure appeared inside the office.
Not clearly.
Only a silhouette.
The person wore black gloves.
Their face remained hidden beneath a hood.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"They knew where the blind spots were."
The figure calmly approached Arthur's desk.
Opened a hidden drawer.
Removed a leather-bound ledger.
Then disappeared through the secret bookcase.
The entire operation lasted less than forty seconds.
Harold immediately recognized the ledger.
"My God..."
"What?"
"Arthur's original shareholder register."
Lillian looked confused.
"I thought we already had that."
Harold shook his head.
"No."
"We had certified copies."
"That..."
"...was the original."
Nathan quietly closed his eyes.
"They've been waiting for us to open Lighthouse."
Evelyn looked at him.
"So this wasn't a theft."
"No."
"It was a distraction."
Meanwhile...
Vanessa Blake sat alone in the Presidential Suite.
She had grown tired of waiting for Dominic.
Her phone buzzed.
A text message from an unknown number.
Leave the hotel immediately.
She frowned.
Another message arrived.
Dominic lied to you.
Then another.
A photograph.
It showed Dominic entering the boardroom that morning.
Standing only a few feet away from Evelyn.
The caption beneath it read:
He isn't who you think he is.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Someone's playing games."
She deleted the messages.
But a final notification appeared before she could lock her screen.
A live security feed.
The camera showed someone standing outside her suite door.
Completely still.
Watching.
Back underground...
Marcus suddenly froze.
"I found the transfer destination."
Harold looked over his shoulder.
"Where are they moving control?"
Marcus enlarged the encrypted record.
Instead of a bank account...
Or another corporation...
Only one name appeared.
Whitmore Legacy Foundation
Daniel frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
Nathan looked genuinely surprised.
"Neither have I."
Harold slowly sat down.
"I have."
Everyone turned toward him.
"The Legacy Foundation..."
"...was Arthur's final unfinished project."
"What was it?"
Harold answered quietly.
"He never told me."
"He only said one thing."
"What?"
"'If the company ever loses its way...'"
"'...the Foundation will remember what we built it for.'"
Evelyn stared at the transfer request.
Then she noticed something strange.
A timestamp.
The authorization had been created...
Twelve years ago.
On the day Arthur Whitmore died.
She looked at Nathan.
"This wasn't triggered today."
He understood immediately.
"No."
"It was programmed."
Daniel completed the thought.
"And someone has been waiting twelve years..."
"...for the exact conditions Arthur described."
An alert suddenly interrupted Marcus's tablet.
Transfer Progress: 49%
Harold stood abruptly.
"If it reaches one hundred percent..."
"...control of every Whitmore asset could be redirected according to Arthur's dormant protocol."
Marcus looked alarmed.
"Can we stop it?"
Nathan answered before anyone else.
"Not from here."
"Where then?"
Nathan looked toward the oldest section of the archive.
"There is one place Arthur designed to override every executive command."
He pointed toward a sealed bronze door no one had noticed before.
Its inscription had faded with time.
Evelyn brushed away the dust.
Three words slowly emerged.
FOUNDER'S CHAMBER
Before anyone could approach it...
The lights throughout the archive suddenly went dark.
Only one spotlight remained.
It illuminated the bronze door.
Then an old speaker crackled to life.
Arthur Whitmore's recorded voice echoed through the chamber.
"If this door has opened..."
"...then someone I trusted has already failed."
A heavy lock disengaged from inside the chamber.
The bronze door slowly creaked open...

Revealing a room that had remained sealed since Arthur Whitmore's final day.
