Chapter 13: Richard Hale's Final Promise

Chapter 13: Richard Hale's Final Promise
No one spoke.
The words WAITING FOR FINAL GUARDIAN... glowed across every monitor in the Founder's Chamber.
Dominic stood frozen in the elevator doorway, Richard Hale's brass key still clutched in his hand.
"I don't understand," he said quietly.
"I've never been part of Whitmore Holdings."
Nathan Mercer looked at him with sympathy.
"You weren't chosen because you belonged to Whitmore."
"You were chosen because your father refused to betray Arthur."
Harold slowly approached Dominic.
"For twenty-five years," he said, "I believed Richard Hale was simply Arthur's chief legal advisor."
Nathan shook his head.
"He was much more than that."
"He was Arthur's closest friend."
Evelyn looked between the two older men.
"My grandfather never mentioned him."
Nathan smiled sadly.
"That was the point."
"The fewer people who knew Richard's true role..."
"...the safer everyone would be."
Dominic finally unfolded Arthur's sealed letter.
The paper had yellowed with age.
Across the top, Arthur had written:
To Dominic, if Richard is no longer here to explain.
Dominic took a slow breath and began reading aloud.
"Your father once saved my life."
Everyone in the room became still.
"Years later, I asked him to do something far more difficult."
"I asked him to protect my family without ever receiving credit."
Dominic's voice began to waver.
"Richard accepted immediately."
Evelyn looked down.
She suddenly understood why Arthur had trusted Richard so completely.
The letter continued.
"If you are reading this..."
"...then I have failed to return."
"You may wonder why I chose someone outside my family to become the Third Guardian."
Arthur answered his own question.
"Because blood alone cannot protect an empire."
"Character can."
Nathan quietly closed his eyes.
"That sounds exactly like him."
Marcus interrupted softly.
"The transfer protocol just reached ninety-two percent."
No one moved.
Dominic kept reading.
"One day, Evelyn may judge you unfairly."
He looked toward Evelyn.
She lowered her eyes.
"If that day comes..."
"...remember she carries responsibilities you cannot yet imagine."
The silence between them became almost unbearable.
Finally, Evelyn stepped forward.
"I'm sorry."
Dominic looked up.
"For what?"
"I believed the worst about you."
She hesitated.
"And after yesterday..."
"I had every reason to."
Dominic smiled sadly.
"I deserved that."
"I failed you long before I knew who you really were."
For the first time since the hotel lobby confrontation, neither of them spoke as adversaries.
Suddenly...
A soft chime echoed through the chamber.
The central monitor displayed a new message.
Final Guardian Identified
Beneath it appeared Richard Hale's digital signature.
Then another line.
Voice Authentication Required
Nathan frowned.
"Arthur never trusted passwords."
Harold nodded.
"He trusted promises."
The speakers activated.
Richard Hale's recorded voice filled the room.
"Dominic..."
"If you're hearing this..."
"...I've already kept my promise."
The recording paused briefly.
"Now you must decide whether you'll keep yours."
The screen displayed a single instruction.
Repeat the Guardian's Oath.
Dominic stared at the words.
"I don't know it."
Nathan smiled.
"Your father made sure you would."
Another memory surfaced.
Dominic was ten years old.
Richard tucked him into bed after a thunderstorm.
Instead of telling a bedtime story...
He had made Dominic repeat a strange sentence.
Richard had smiled and said,
"One day these words may matter."
Dominic had forgotten them.
Until now.
Without thinking...
He spoke.
"Power is never owned."
"It is borrowed."
"Honor is never inherited."
"It is earned."
"And when duty stands above desire..."
"...I choose duty."
The chamber became perfectly still.
A soft tone sounded.
Voice Authentication Accepted.
The monitors immediately changed.
Third Guardian Confirmed
Transfer Protocol Paused
Everyone released the breath they had been holding.
Marcus laughed quietly.
"We stopped it."
Nathan, however, did not smile.
"No."
"We delayed it."
The monitor flashed again.
A new warning appeared.
Secondary Authorization Override Detected
Harold's face lost all color.
"What now?"
Marcus opened the security logs.
His eyes widened.
"The person controlling this system..."
"...just logged in again."
"From where?"
Marcus enlarged the floor plan.
The blinking red dot was no longer inside Arthur's office.
It had moved.
Directly above them.
Location:
Grand Ballroom
Evelyn frowned.
"That's impossible."
"The ballroom is closed."
Marcus zoomed in further.
One security camera remained active.
Its image appeared on the largest screen.
The ballroom lights were on.
A single chair stood in the center of the room.
On the chair rested a black leather briefcase.
No people.
No movement.
Only the briefcase.
Then, without warning...
The ballroom speakers activated.
A calm voice echoed across the empty room.
"Congratulations."
"You found Arthur's guardians."
A slow clap followed.
"Now..."
"...let's see if you can save his empire."
The briefcase suddenly unlocked by itself.
Its lid slowly opened.
Inside...
Rested a countdown timer.
09:59
And beside it...
Arthur Whitmore's original company seal.
Nathan whispered in disbelief.
"The Founder Seal..."
Harold took one step backward.
"No one was ever supposed to find it."
The countdown ticked to 09:58.

The race had begun.
