Chapter 7: The Guest in the Presidential Suite

Chapter 7: The Guest in the Presidential Suite

The room fell silent.

Harold lowered his phone slowly, reading the message one more time as though the words might change.

Bring the five-dollar bill.

Nothing else.

No signature.

No explanation.

Only the same folded bill Vanessa Blake had tossed onto the marble floor the night before.

Evelyn reached into the pocket of her navy blazer.

She had moved it there before changing clothes.

The crisp bill remained folded exactly as she had left it.

Harold looked at her.

"You don't actually intend to meet this person alone."

"No."

She unfolded the bill carefully.

Something caught the light.

A tiny silver mark had appeared along one edge.

Lillian leaned closer.

"That wasn't there yesterday."

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"No."

She rubbed the edge gently.

A thin transparent strip separated from the paper.

Marcus frowned.

"A microfilm?"

Lillian nodded.

"Old-fashioned."

"But incredibly difficult to detect."

Harold immediately dimmed the lights.

The strip was placed beneath a portable scanner.

Within seconds, a digital image appeared.

Not numbers.

Not bank accounts.

Just a sentence.

If you found this, your grandfather chose correctly.

Every person in the room exchanged uneasy glances.

Someone had hidden a message inside the very bill Vanessa had thrown at Evelyn.

But how?

Lillian enlarged the scan.

Another line slowly became visible.

Suite 5001. Come alone.

Marcus immediately objected.

"Absolutely not."

"We don't know who's waiting."

Harold nodded.

"This could be a trap."

Evelyn quietly folded the bill again.

"It probably is."

She looked toward Marcus.

"How many entrances does the Presidential Suite have?"

"One public entrance."

"One emergency exit."

"And a private service corridor."

"Seal the corridor."

Marcus nodded.

"It'll be done."

Across the hotel...

Dominic remained seated in the boardroom.

The directors had left temporarily, leaving only Harold's assistant to watch him.

He couldn't understand what was happening.

No accusations.

No shouting.

No suspension.

Only questions.

Questions he couldn't answer.

His phone buzzed inside his jacket.

He secretly glanced at the screen.

Unknown Number.

Again.

He answered quietly.

"Hello?"

The same elderly voice returned.

"Don't go home tonight."

Dominic lowered his voice.

"Who are you?"

"You've already opened the wrong door."

"I've never seen Vault Seven."

A pause.

Then the voice replied,

"I know."

"You only think you haven't."

The line disconnected.

Dominic stared at the phone.

A strange feeling settled over him.

As if pieces of his own past were being hidden from him.

At 8:15 a.m., Evelyn stood outside Suite 5001.

The hallway was empty.

Marcus spoke through a concealed earpiece.

"My team is in position."

Harold added,

"Thermal imaging shows only one person inside."

Evelyn raised her hand.

"No one enters unless I say so."

She knocked once.

A calm voice answered.

"The door isn't locked."

She stepped inside.

The luxurious suite overlooked the Las Vegas Strip.

Fresh coffee rested on the table.

Two untouched cups.

An elderly man stood beside the windows.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

He wore an ordinary gray suit.

Nothing about him suggested wealth or power.

He turned slowly.

"Evelyn."

She froze.

The face was older.

More lined.

But unmistakable.

"Nathan Mercer."

He smiled gently.

"You've grown into your grandfather's eyes."

Outside the suite...

Marcus listened carefully through the hidden microphone.

Harold whispered,

"Is it him?"

Marcus nodded.

"It appears so."

Lillian frowned.

"But he was declared dead."

Harold answered quietly,

"Apparently not."

Inside...

Nathan motioned toward the empty chair.

"Sit."

Evelyn remained standing.

"My grandfather attended your funeral."

Nathan sighed.

"I attended it too."

She narrowed her eyes.

"You faked your death."

"I was ordered to."

"By whom?"

Nathan looked toward the skyline.

"Arthur."

The answer stunned her.

"My grandfather?"

"He knew someone inside Whitmore Holdings had begun building a network that reached far beyond stolen money."

Nathan looked back at her.

"He couldn't expose them."

"So he hid me."

Evelyn studied him carefully.

"If that's true..."

"Why come back now?"

Nathan smiled sadly.

"Because the person Arthur feared..."

"...has finally made their move."

He reached into his coat pocket.

Instead of a weapon...

He produced an old brass key.

Its surface was engraved with the Whitmore family crest.

"This opens Project Lighthouse."

Evelyn frowned.

"We found blueprints."

Nathan nodded.

"But not the entrance."

He placed the key on the table.

"There are documents Arthur trusted no computer to store."

"What documents?"

"The originals."

"Original what?"

Nathan's expression became serious.

"The real ownership records."

Before Evelyn could ask another question...

Every light inside the suite suddenly went out.

Emergency lighting flickered red.

Marcus's voice burst through the earpiece.

"Power failure!"

Harold shouted over the radio.

"Backup generators just went offline!"

Nathan stood instantly.

"They've found me."

The windows automatically darkened.

The electronic door locked with a heavy metallic click.

Marcus tried the handle from outside.

"It won't open!"

Inside the darkened suite...

A distorted voice echoed from the ceiling speakers.

"Good morning, Evelyn."

"I was wondering how long it would take before you found Nathan."

The voice chuckled softly.

"You've been asking the wrong questions."

Nathan stepped in front of Evelyn.

"They're here."

The voice continued,

"You've been searching for the thief."

"When you should have been searching..."

"...for the heir."

Then the connection went dead.

The emergency lights flickered one last time.

And somewhere beneath the Sterling Crown Hotel...

A hidden vault door, sealed for more than twenty years...

May you like

Slowly began to unlock.

To Be Continued...
