Chapter 3: The File Hidden in Vault Seven

Chapter 3: The File Hidden in Vault Seven
Rain swept across the Las Vegas skyline before dawn.
From the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Sterling Crown's executive offices, the Strip looked strangely peaceful.
Inside the command center, however, no one had slept.
Rows of analysts examined financial records while forensic accountants reconstructed eighteen months of transactions.
Every few minutes another report arrived on Harold Alder's desk.
None of them brought good news.
At exactly 5:45 a.m., the elevator doors opened.
A woman in a charcoal-gray suit stepped out carrying a silver briefcase.
Her security badge displayed only one name.
Lillian Grant
Director of Internal Compliance.
She had spent twenty-five years uncovering fraud for multinational corporations.
When she entered the conference room, Harold stood.
"You came quickly."
"I was told the Chair called personally."
Harold nodded.
"She did."
Lillian looked toward Evelyn.
"It's good to see you again."
Evelyn smiled politely.
"I wish it were under better circumstances."
Lillian placed the silver briefcase on the table.
"I've reviewed the preliminary evidence."
"It gets worse."
She opened the case.
Inside were dozens of encrypted storage drives.
"The accounting fraud is only the surface."
She inserted one drive into the conference room computer.
A spreadsheet appeared.
Columns of numbers filled the screen.
Director Samuel Brooks frowned.
"Those aren't expense reports."
"No."
Lillian enlarged one section.
"They're property acquisition records."
Every purchase had been approved by Dominic Hale.
Small hotels.
Vacant land.
Old casinos.
Private villas.
The purchases seemed ordinary.
Until Lillian highlighted the buyers.
"They all belong to different companies."
Director Ruiz leaned forward.
"But they're connected."
Lillian nodded.
"The companies don't exist."
A silence settled over the room.
"They're shells."
Harold looked surprised.
"We never found these."
"You weren't supposed to."
Lillian clicked another file.
Ownership records appeared.
Each shell company eventually traced back to one anonymous trust.
The beneficiary's name remained hidden.
Director Michael Chen folded his arms.
"Can we identify the owner?"
Lillian hesitated.
"I thought we couldn't."
She turned toward Evelyn.
"Until we opened Vault Seven."
Every director looked confused.
Harold's expression changed immediately.
"Vault Seven?"
Lillian nodded.
"The private archive beneath the original headquarters."
Harold spoke softly.
"It hasn't been opened in twelve years."
Evelyn looked at him.
"I didn't authorize it."
"You didn't have to."
Lillian answered.
"Your grandfather did."
She removed a yellow envelope from her briefcase.
The paper looked old.
Its wax seal remained intact.
Across the front were handwritten words.
To be opened only if Whitmore Holdings faces betrayal from within.
No one spoke.
Evelyn slowly broke the seal.
Inside rested a single handwritten letter.
The elegant handwriting belonged unmistakably to Arthur Whitmore.
Founder of Whitmore Holdings.
Evelyn's grandfather.
She began reading aloud.
"If this letter has been opened, someone close to this family has mistaken trust for weakness."
The directors listened without moving.
"Money can always be earned again."
"Reputation cannot."
Evelyn turned the page.
Her breathing slowed.
Then she stopped.
Harold noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
She silently handed him the letter.
His eyes widened.
Impossible.
Director Brooks stood.
"What does it say?"
Harold answered carefully.
"Arthur Whitmore created a contingency plan."
"A secret division?"
"No."
"A second ownership structure."
The room fell silent.
Harold looked directly at Evelyn.
"If fraud reached executive leadership..."
"...control of Whitmore Holdings would automatically transfer to the family trust."
Director Ruiz blinked.
"Meaning?"
Harold looked toward every director.
"No executive."
"No shareholder."
"No board vote."
"No outside investor."
"Could stop the Chair from removing anyone."
Director Chen slowly smiled.
"So Dominic never actually had a chance."
Evelyn shook her head.
"He never knew."
Across the hotel...
Dominic stretched as sunlight entered the Presidential Suite.
Vanessa was already awake.
She looked through room service menus.
"I ordered breakfast."
"Caviar."
"Fresh pastries."
"Imported fruit."
Dominic laughed.
"Enjoy it."
"Today deserves celebrating."
His phone buzzed again.
Another message from Corporate Headquarters.
Attendance is mandatory.
Failure to appear will result in immediate suspension.
His smile faded slightly.
"That's unusually aggressive."
Vanessa shrugged.
"They're probably nervous about the merger."
She kissed his cheek.
"You'll be running the company by tonight."
Dominic smiled again.
He believed her.
Back downstairs...
Lillian opened another encrypted file.
"This is what concerns me."
A timeline appeared.
Transfers.
Hotel stays.
Private flights.
Large cash withdrawals.
Everything connected perfectly.
Except for one transaction.
Director Ruiz frowned.
"It disappeared."
Lillian nodded.
"One payment."
"Thirty-five million dollars."
"No destination."
"No recipient."
"No banking record."
"It simply vanished."
Director Brooks looked confused.
"That's impossible."
"It should be."
Lillian enlarged one final line.
Authorization Code: EH-01
Every eye turned toward Evelyn.
Harold immediately shook his head.
"That's the Chair's executive authorization."
"I never approved it."
Lillian answered quietly.
"We know."
"Someone used your personal authorization code."
The room became perfectly silent.
Harold slowly stood.
"Only three people ever had access."
"Myself."
"The Chair."
"And..."
He stopped speaking.
Everyone already knew.
Dominic Hale.
For the first time all morning...
Anger crossed Evelyn's face.
Not because of the money.
Not because of the betrayal.
Because someone had stolen her identity to move thirty-five million dollars without permission.
She closed the folder.
"I want every server examined."
"Every email recovered."
"Every deleted file restored."
Lillian nodded.
"We've already started."
Harold added,
"And the FBI?"
Evelyn thought for a long moment.
"Not yet."
Director Brooks looked surprised.
"Why wait?"
"Because someone helped him."
The room froze.
Evelyn looked at the timeline once more.
"One man couldn't hide this much money alone."
She looked toward the giant screen.
"There is another player."
"And until we know who it is..."
"...no one leaves this building."
At that exact moment...
A security officer rushed into the boardroom without knocking.
His face was pale.
"Madam Chair..."
"What is it?"
He swallowed hard.
"We've just discovered someone accessed Vault Seven."
Harold frowned.
"We know."
The guard shook his head.
"No..."
He handed Harold a printed security report.
"The vault wasn't just opened."
"It was entered again..."
"...twenty-three minutes ago."
Everyone stared.
"By whom?" Evelyn asked.
The guard hesitated.
"The security system identified the visitor..."
"...as Dominic Hale."
The room fell into stunned silence.
But Dominic had never left the Presidential Suite.
If he hadn't entered the vault...
May you like
Then someone inside Whitmore Holdings was using his identity.
To Be Continued...
