Chapter 14: The Founder’s Final Test

Chapter 14: The Founder’s Final Test
The countdown reached 09:47.
No one in the Founder's Chamber spoke.
Marcus was already issuing orders through his encrypted radio.
"Seal every ballroom entrance."
"Evacuate guests from the convention wing."
"No one touches that briefcase until my team arrives."
Security acknowledged immediately.
Yet the camera feed showed something impossible.
The Grand Ballroom remained completely empty.
Not a single officer appeared.
Marcus frowned.
"Where are my people?"
A dispatcher answered with confusion.
"Sir... they're already inside the ballroom."
Marcus looked back at the monitor.
The room was still deserted.
Only the briefcase sat beneath the crystal chandelier.
His voice dropped.
"Someone's manipulating our camera feeds."
Nathan stepped toward the main console.
"No."
"They're manipulating something else."
He entered an old administrator code.
A second video feed appeared.
Everyone stared.
The first feed showed an empty ballroom.
The second showed three security officers cautiously surrounding the briefcase.
Harold looked between the screens.
"Which one is real?"
Nathan answered quietly.
"Both."
The room fell silent.
"This hotel was built with two independent surveillance systems."
"Arthur never wanted one network controlling every camera."
"The intruder hacked the modern system."
"But forgot about the isolated archive network."
Marcus smiled for the first time.
"So we can finally see what they're hiding."
In the Presidential Suite...
Vanessa Blake hurriedly packed designer handbags into expensive luggage.
The anonymous messages had unsettled her.
She no longer cared about Dominic.
She only wanted to leave.
As she opened the suite door...
Two hotel security officers stood waiting.
"Ms. Blake?"
"Yes?"
"We need to ask you a few questions regarding company expenses."
Her face turned pale.
"I haven't done anything."
One officer handed her a tablet.
On the screen appeared copies of invoices.
Luxury jewelry.
Private flights.
Resort villas.
Every purchase had been charged to Whitmore Holdings.
Each invoice contained her signature.
Vanessa whispered,
"Dominic told me..."
"...he owned the company."
Neither officer answered.
Deep underground...
Dominic continued studying Arthur's letter.
Near the bottom, another folded page slipped free.
It wasn't addressed to him.
It was addressed to Evelyn.
He handed it to her.
"I think this belongs to you."
She unfolded it carefully.
Arthur's handwriting filled only three lines.
Never judge a person by the worst day of their life.
Judge them by what they choose after the truth is revealed.
That is where character begins.
Evelyn looked up.
Her eyes met Dominic's.
For the first time since their marriage had begun to unravel, there was no anger between them.
Only regret.
"I don't know if we can repair everything."
Dominic nodded honestly.
"I don't know either."
"But I'd like the chance to earn it."
Nathan quietly smiled.
Arthur had anticipated even this moment.
Suddenly...
The secondary camera feed changed.
One of Marcus's officers approached the briefcase.
Without touching it, he used a portable scanner.
"No explosives."
"No chemical agents."
Marcus frowned.
"Open it."
The officer carefully lifted the lid completely.
Inside lay only three objects.
Arthur Whitmore's Founder Seal.
A crystal key.
And a handwritten note.
Marcus enlarged the image.
Harold immediately recognized the handwriting.
"Arthur."
The officer read aloud.
If this briefcase reaches my family...
...the wrong person has already failed.
Nathan closed his eyes.
"This wasn't meant for us."
Before anyone could respond...
A fourth object slowly rose from a hidden compartment beneath the case.
A small projector.
It activated automatically.
A holographic recording of Arthur Whitmore appeared above the briefcase.
He looked older than anyone remembered.
Tired.
But smiling.
"Hello."
"If you're seeing this..."
"...then someone has attempted to steal Whitmore Holdings."
He paused.
"But that was never my greatest fear."
The hologram slowly turned, as though looking directly at Evelyn.
"My greatest fear..."
"...was that my family would destroy itself while protecting my company."
The chamber became completely silent.
Arthur continued.
"So I created one final test."
He raised the Founder Seal.
"There is no single heir."
"There never was."
"The Whitmore legacy belongs only to those willing to lead together."
Daniel lowered his head.
Nathan smiled softly.
Even Harold seemed relieved.
Then Arthur's expression became serious.
"If you've reached this point..."
"...the real enemy is already standing much closer than you believe."
The hologram suddenly distorted.
Static filled the image.
Someone was attempting to interrupt the recording.
For a brief second...
Another face replaced Arthur's.
Only for a fraction of a second.
Marcus froze the frame.
He enlarged the image.
Harold leaned closer.
"No..."
"It can't be."
The face belonged to a respected senior Whitmore executive.
A man who had served Arthur for nearly thirty years.
Victor Langford.
Nathan's expression darkened immediately.
"I trusted him."
Harold whispered,
"So did Arthur."
Marcus quickly checked the security database.
Victor Langford had officially retired...
Eight years earlier.
Lillian began searching financial records.
Her fingers suddenly stopped moving.
"I found him."
"Where?"
She looked up slowly.
"He never retired."
"He became..."
"...Chairman of the Whitmore Legacy Foundation."
The room fell silent.
Nathan finally understood.
"There never was a ghost."
"There never was Arthur's secret authorization."
"It was Victor."
"He spent twelve years waiting for Arthur's contingency plan to activate."
At that exact moment...
Marcus's radio erupted with frantic voices.
"Chief!"
"Victor Langford has entered the hotel!"
"He's walking toward the Grand Ballroom!"
Marcus grabbed his jacket.
"Move!"
The countdown on the ballroom briefcase reached:
03:59
