Chapter 8: Project Lighthouse

Chapter 8: Project Lighthouse

The emergency lights cast the Presidential Suite in a dim crimson glow.

For several seconds, no one moved.

Nathan Mercer stood between Evelyn and the darkened windows, his eyes fixed on the ceiling speakers as if expecting another message.

Instead...

Silence.

Outside the locked suite, Marcus Doyle pounded on the reinforced door.

"Madam Chair!"

"We're cutting through the electronic lock!"

Harold's voice followed over the emergency channel.

"Stay where you are! We've restored partial power. Give us sixty seconds."

Nathan shook his head.

"We don't have sixty seconds."

Evelyn turned toward him.

"What do you mean?"

He picked up the brass key from the coffee table.

"Project Lighthouse was never just an archive."

"It was an insurance policy."

Nathan walked to one wall of the suite.

At first glance, it appeared to be ordinary walnut paneling.

He pressed three carved decorative studs in a precise sequence.

A quiet mechanical click echoed through the room.

Part of the wall slid open.

Behind it...

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Evelyn stared in disbelief.

"There's a passage behind the Presidential Suite?"

Nathan nodded.

"Arthur insisted every flagship property contain an independent evacuation route."

"He trusted architecture more than technology."

Before Evelyn could respond, Marcus's voice crackled again.

"The lock just disengaged!"

Nathan looked at her.

"If Marcus enters now, he'll follow protocol."

"And protocol is exactly what our enemy expects."

"You have to choose."

"Trust the system..."

"...or trust your grandfather."

Evelyn hesitated only a moment.

She keyed her earpiece.

"Marcus."

"Yes, Madam Chair?"

"I'm safe."

"I'm entering a private passage."

"What? Absolutely not!"

"No one follows."

"That's an order."

Marcus protested, but the transmission ended as Nathan gently closed the hidden entrance behind them.

The staircase descended several stories beneath the hotel.

Stone replaced polished marble.

The air grew cooler.

Unlike the luxury above, these corridors felt decades old.

"They built all of this beneath the hotel?" Evelyn asked.

Nathan smiled.

"No."

"It was already here."

Meanwhile...

Back in the executive boardroom, Dominic sat alone under discreet security supervision.

His thoughts kept returning to the anonymous phone call.

"When they ask about Vault Seven... tell them the truth."

But what truth?

He didn't know anything about Vault Seven.

Or did he?

A sudden flash crossed his mind.

He was twelve years old.

His father, Richard Hale, was driving through the Nevada desert.

"You must never tell anyone where we went today," Richard had said.

Young Dominic looked out the window.

Far in the distance stood an unfinished hotel tower.

Its steel frame caught the setting sun.

Above the construction gate...

A temporary sign read:

Project Lighthouse

The memory vanished.

Dominic gripped the edge of the table.

"No..."

He whispered.

"I've been there."

Deep beneath the Sterling Crown...

Nathan stopped before an enormous steel door.

Unlike Vault Seven, this entrance bore no electronic keypad.

Only a circular lock.

He inserted the brass key.

The mechanism groaned to life.

The massive door slowly opened.

Rows of shelves stretched into the darkness.

Thousands of paper files.

Blueprints.

Original contracts.

Leather-bound ledgers.

Everything preserved in climate-controlled silence.

Evelyn breathed softly.

"My grandfather kept physical records of everything."

Nathan nodded.

"He never trusted computers with the company's most important secrets."

He walked toward a single black cabinet.

Across its front were engraved two words.

LIGHTHOUSE FILES

Nathan opened the drawer.

Instead of documents...

There were photographs.

One after another.

Arthur Whitmore.

Nathan Mercer.

Richard Hale.

And dozens of other executives.

Each photo was dated.

Each contained handwritten notes.

Evelyn noticed one photograph immediately.

It showed Arthur shaking hands with Richard Hale.

On the back, Arthur had written:

'The son must never inherit the father's burden.'

"The son?" Evelyn whispered.

"Dominic."

Nathan nodded slowly.

"Richard made Arthur a promise."

"What promise?"

"To keep his family away from what was coming."

Back upstairs...

Marcus and his security team finally entered Suite 5001.

The room was empty.

The hidden staircase had already sealed itself.

Marcus searched every wall.

"There has to be another entrance."

One officer approached the coffee table.

"Sir."

Marcus turned.

Resting beside the untouched coffee cups...

Was an old photograph.

It hadn't been there moments earlier.

The image showed Arthur Whitmore standing beside a teenage Evelyn.

Behind them...

Barely visible...

Stood a young boy.

Marcus enlarged the image on his tablet.

His eyes widened.

The boy was Dominic.

Years before he met Evelyn.

Years before either of them understood who the other really was.

Someone had deliberately placed Dominic in Arthur Whitmore's world long before their marriage.

At the same moment...

Lillian Grant burst into the boardroom carrying another forensic report.

"Harold!"

"What happened?"

"We finally traced the encrypted email."

Harold looked up.

"The one titled Phase Two?"

"Yes."

"It wasn't sent from overseas."

"Where, then?"

Lillian's expression turned pale.

"It originated..."

"...from inside Arthur Whitmore's private office."

Harold froze.

"That's impossible."

"No one has used that office in twelve years."

Lillian slowly placed the printed report on the table.

"The timestamp..."

"...was yesterday."

Silence spread through the room.

Someone had entered Arthur Whitmore's sealed office before Evelyn ever arrived at the hotel.

Someone who knew every hidden passage.

Every secret archive.

Every contingency plan.

And whoever they were...

They had always been one step ahead.

Far below, Nathan opened the final drawer inside the Lighthouse archive.

He removed a weathered leather folder and handed it to Evelyn.

Across the cover, embossed in fading gold letters, was a single name:

THE TRUE HEIR

Nathan met her eyes.

"Everything changes once you open that file."

Evelyn slowly reached for it.

Just as her fingers touched the cover...

A loud metallic alarm echoed through the underground archive.

Someone else had unlocked the outer vault.
