Chapter 9: The True Heir

Chapter 9: The True Heir
The alarm reverberated through the underground archive.
A deep metallic chime echoed along the stone corridors, followed by the steady flash of amber warning lights.
Nathan Mercer looked toward the entrance.
"They found us sooner than I expected."
Evelyn clutched the leather folder labeled THE TRUE HEIR.
"Who?"
Nathan's expression hardened.
"The only person who knows every emergency entrance besides me."
Footsteps echoed faintly from beyond the massive steel door.
Slow.
Measured.
Not the hurried pace of hotel security.
Someone who knew exactly where they were going.
Nathan led Evelyn behind a long row of archival cabinets.
"Don't open the folder yet."
"Why not?"
"Because once you read it..."
"...you'll understand why Arthur spent years protecting more than this company."
He reached beneath an old oak desk and pressed a hidden latch.
A reinforced steel partition slid halfway across the room.
It wouldn't stop an intruder forever.
But it would buy them time.
Above them, in Arthur Whitmore's restored office, Harold Alder and Lillian Grant examined every inch of the room.
"There has to be another entrance," Harold muttered.
Lillian knelt beside the fireplace.
She noticed tiny scratches on the marble floor.
"This bookcase has been moved recently."
Marcus joined her.
Together they pushed against the heavy shelves.
With a quiet rumble, the entire wall rotated inward.
A hidden staircase descended into darkness.
Marcus immediately radioed his team.
"Seal every lower-level exit."
Harold shook his head.
"No."
Marcus looked surprised.
"If Nathan is with Evelyn..."
"...he'll avoid every obvious route."
Harold looked into the darkness.
"We're already behind."
Meanwhile, Dominic remained in the boardroom.
He stared at the old photograph Marcus had sent to Harold moments earlier.
The teenage boy standing in the background...
Was unmistakably him.
He whispered to himself,
"I've never been to the Sterling Crown."
Then another memory surfaced.
He was thirteen years old.
His father handed him a small wooden box.
"If anything ever happens to me..."
"...give this to Arthur Whitmore."
Dominic remembered asking,
"Who's Arthur?"
His father had smiled sadly.
"The best man I ever worked for."
The memory ended abruptly.
Dominic closed his eyes.
His father had died only months later.
The wooden box had disappeared during the funeral.
Until now...
He had forgotten it ever existed.
Deep inside Project Lighthouse...
Nathan finally nodded.
"It's time."
Evelyn slowly opened the leather folder.
The first page contained Arthur Whitmore's handwriting.
If you are reading this, I have failed to protect everyone I promised to protect.
She turned the page.
A family tree unfolded across several sheets.
At the top stood Arthur Whitmore.
Below him...
His daughter.
Then Evelyn.
Nothing unusual.
Until another branch appeared.
Hidden beneath a folded section.
A second bloodline.
Evelyn frowned.
"This can't be right."
Nathan remained silent.
The hidden branch ended with one name.
Daniel Whitmore
Date of birth: 1988.
Status:
Identity Sealed.
She looked up.
"I've never heard this name."
"No one has."
"Who is he?"
Nathan answered quietly.
"Arthur's grandson."
"But I'm Arthur's only grandchild."
"So you were told."
The words hung heavily in the air.
Nathan continued.
"Arthur had another child before he built Whitmore Holdings."
"He kept that branch of the family completely hidden."
"Why?"
"Because people were already trying to gain control of his fortune."
"He believed secrecy would keep them safe."
Evelyn looked back at the file.
"So this Daniel..."
"...could still be alive?"
Nathan nodded.
"If he is..."
"...he legally owns part of Whitmore Holdings."
Suddenly...
A loud metallic crash echoed from the entrance.
Someone had breached the first security gate.
Nathan extinguished the desk lamp.
The archive fell into near darkness.
Only the emergency lights remained.
He whispered,
"We're out of time."
At the same moment...
Harold, Marcus, and Lillian reached the bottom of the hidden staircase.
The tunnel split into three separate passages.
Marcus checked the floor.
"There are fresh footprints."
Harold frowned.
"Which direction?"
Marcus examined the dust carefully.
"That's strange."
"There are two sets."
"One heading deeper."
"And another..."
"...heading toward the old maintenance elevators."
Lillian looked puzzled.
"Someone wanted us to split up."
Harold nodded.
"And if we guess wrong..."
"...we lose them."
Back in the archive...
Nathan removed a small brass compass from his pocket.
It wasn't a compass at all.
It was another key.
He inserted it into a narrow slot hidden inside the final cabinet.
A second compartment opened.
Inside rested a single sealed envelope.
Across the front, Arthur had written:
Only Dominic Hale may open this.
Evelyn stared at it.
"Dominic?"
Nathan nodded.
"He never knew this existed."
"Why leave something for him?"
Nathan looked toward the sealed vault door.
"Because Arthur believed Richard Hale kept one final promise."
"And if Richard succeeded..."
"...Dominic would one day need the truth."
Before Evelyn could ask another question...
The reinforced steel partition shuddered violently.
A second impact followed.
Then a third.
Someone was forcing their way inside.
Nathan handed Evelyn both the leather folder and the sealed envelope.
"Whatever happens..."
"...don't let anyone else have these."
Another deafening crash echoed through the archive.
The partition bent inward.
A shadow appeared in the opening.
The intruder stepped into the emergency light.
The face remained hidden beneath a hood.
But one detail stood out immediately.
The person wore the second Whitmore signet ring.
The one believed to have disappeared after Evelyn's father's death.
The stranger removed one leather glove...
Looked directly at Evelyn...
And quietly said,
"You've inherited the company."
"But you've never been told..."
May you like
"...who inherited the family."
