Chapter 2: The Emergency Board Meeting

The heavy walnut doors sealed with a soft electronic click.

Twenty directors exchanged uneasy glances.

Emergency meetings at Whitmore Holdings were almost unheard of.

Emergency meetings called personally by Evelyn Whitmore were even rarer.

Harold Alder remained beside the entrance, his hands folded behind his back.

"No phones," he announced calmly.

One by one, every executive placed their phones into the signal-proof security box positioned at the center of the table.

Silence settled over the room.

Evelyn remained standing.

She wore the same faded cardigan.

The same worn sneakers.

The same calm expression.

Yet every person in the room knew one truth.

She controlled every billion-dollar decision inside Whitmore Holdings.

Director Samuel Brooks cleared his throat.

"Madam Chair... may we ask why we've been called here on such short notice?"

Evelyn didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she slid the folded five-dollar bill across the polished table.

It stopped in front of Samuel.

He frowned.

"I don't understand."

"No," Evelyn replied quietly.

"You don't."

She looked around the room.

"Tonight, one of our senior executives allowed another person to throw this at me."

Confused murmurs spread through the directors.

Director Elena Ruiz frowned.

"Someone insulted you?"

"They humiliated the Chairwoman of Whitmore Holdings inside a Whitmore property."

Every face hardened.

Not because of the insult.

Because it represented a security failure.

Harold pressed a remote.

The lights dimmed.

The enormous screen at the end of the boardroom came alive.

Security footage filled the display.

Crystal chandeliers.

The marble lobby.

Dominic and Vanessa approaching the reception desk.

Every director watched silently.

Vanessa laughed.

"So this is the wife you said was holding you back?"

Several directors exchanged puzzled looks.

They had never met Dominic's wife.

The video continued.

The five-dollar bill floated gently onto the marble floor.

Then Dominic's voice echoed through the room.

"If you're still standing here tomorrow morning, I'll have security escort you out."

No one spoke.

The recording ended.

The lights returned.

The room felt colder.

Director Brooks slowly removed his glasses.

"He had no idea."

"No," Evelyn answered.

"He didn't."

Director Ruiz leaned forward.

"Did he know you owned the Sterling Crown?"

"No."

"Did he know you were the majority shareholder of Whitmore Holdings?"

"No."

Another director frowned.

"Why keep it secret?"

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"My grandfather built this company believing titles should never replace character."

"When Dominic joined Whitmore Holdings six years ago, he was ambitious, intelligent, and disciplined."

She paused.

"I wanted to know whether he loved me..."

"...or my last name."

The room became perfectly still.

"He believed I had inherited a modest family trust."

"Nothing more."

Harold added quietly,

"He never asked."

Director Michael Chen sighed.

"So the marriage itself became a test."

Evelyn nodded.

"For years..."

"He passed."

She looked toward the city lights beyond the windows.

"But success changes people."

Harold distributed black folders.

Each director opened theirs.

Inside were hundreds of pages.

Expense reports.

Private jet manifests.

Luxury jewelry invoices.

Casino entertainment expenses.

Hotel reservations.

International wire transfers.

Director Ruiz flipped through the documents.

Her expression darkened.

"My God..."

Harold spoke.

"Every expense was submitted as client development."

Director Brooks read another page.

"Thirty-seven luxury watches?"

"Corporate gifts."

"None were delivered to clients."

Another page.

"$620,000 yacht charter."

"No client meeting occurred."

Another.

"$1.8 million jewelry purchase."

"Listed as executive hospitality."

Director Chen slowly closed his folder.

"This isn't poor judgment."

Harold nodded.

"It's systematic fraud."

Meanwhile...

Inside the Presidential Suite...

Vanessa stood before the enormous bedroom mirror trying on a diamond necklace Dominic had purchased earlier that month.

"It's beautiful."

Dominic smiled.

"You deserve it."

She admired the sparkling diamonds.

"How much?"

He shrugged.

"I honestly don't remember."

"Maybe two hundred thousand."

Vanessa laughed.

"I love when you stop checking prices."

Neither noticed the tiny red light blinking inside the decorative clock.

Another security camera.

Another recording.

Another piece of evidence.

Back in the boardroom...

Harold switched to another screen.

A complex financial diagram appeared.

Colored lines connected dozens of companies.

Director Brooks narrowed his eyes.

"Those shell corporations..."

"They're connected."

Harold zoomed in.

Seven companies.

Three countries.

One hidden destination.

Director Ruiz whispered,

"Private accounts."

Harold nodded.

"We believe approximately sixty-eight million dollars has been redirected over eighteen months."

The room exploded.

"Sixty-eight million?"

"Impossible!"

"How wasn't this discovered?"

Evelyn answered.

"Because he supervised the internal audits."

Silence.

Everyone suddenly understood.

Dominic had been reviewing his own department.

Director Chen leaned back.

"What do you intend to do?"

Evelyn looked toward Harold.

"Legal?"

"We're prepared."

"Compliance?"

"Ready."

"Forensic Accounting?"

"They've already copied every server."

"Federal reporting?"

"Drafted."

Evelyn nodded once.

"Good."

Then she looked at every director.

"I want no dramatic confrontations."

"No public accusations."

"No media leaks."

"We follow the evidence."

"We protect the company."

"And we allow Mr. Hale every opportunity to explain himself."

Director Brooks smiled slightly.

"You already know he can't."

"No."

"I know the documents won't lie."

High above them...

Dominic received a notification on his phone.

Mandatory Executive Board Meeting

8:00 A.M.

Attendance Required.

He frowned.

"That's strange."

Vanessa looked up.

"What is it?"

"Emergency board meeting."

She laughed.

"Congratulations."

"Maybe tomorrow is the day you become COO."

Dominic smiled.

"Maybe."

He had no idea...

Every promotion under discussion had already been removed from the agenda.

Instead...

His name appeared under a completely different heading.

Special Investigation.

Back inside the executive boardroom...

Harold handed Evelyn one final folder.

Unlike the others...

This one contained only a single photograph.

Dominic.

Standing beside Vanessa.

Boarding a private Whitmore Holdings jet three weeks earlier.

The destination wasn't listed.

Neither were the passengers.

Only one handwritten note appeared beneath the image.

Flight authorization forged.

Evelyn stared at the picture for several long seconds.

Then she quietly closed the folder.

"If this is true..."

She looked around the table.

"...then tomorrow isn't about recovering money."

The directors waited.

Her voice became almost a whisper.

"It's about discovering what else he's hiding."

Outside, lightning flashed over the distant Nevada desert.

Inside the Presidential Suite, Dominic poured another glass of champagne, unaware that the investigation into his finances had just become a criminal inquiry.

And somewhere inside Whitmore Holdings...
