CHAPTER 19 — Blackwater Lighthouse

CHAPTER 19 — Blackwater Lighthouse

The helicopter cut through the thick morning fog.

Below them...

Dark waves crashed against jagged cliffs.

The Atlantic looked endless.

Cold.

Unforgiving.

Marcus studied the island through binoculars.

"There."

A lonely lighthouse stood atop the highest cliff.

Weathered by decades of storms.

Its white paint had long faded to gray.

No roads.

No harbor.

Just rocks and silence.

The pilot spoke over the headset.

"We'll have one chance to land."

"The wind is getting worse."

Mariana looked through the window.

"So is our timing."

Behind them...

Nearly five miles away...

The second helicopter stayed hidden inside the clouds.

The masked sniper calmly assembled his rifle.

He watched Mariana's aircraft through a digital scope.

"Target confirmed."

A calm female voice came through his earpiece.

"Wait."

The sniper lowered the weapon.

"Understood."

The Escalante helicopter landed on a narrow clearing beside the abandoned lighthouse.

The rotors slowed.

Everyone stepped out quickly.

The wind howled across the cliffs.

Andrew looked around.

"It feels..."

Emily finished the sentence.

"...like someone is watching us."

Marcus immediately deployed two security teams.

"Perimeter first."

"No one enters alone."

The lighthouse door creaked open with surprising ease.

Inside...

A spiral staircase climbed toward the lantern room.

Dust covered every step.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Victor frowned.

"Too clean."

Mariana nodded.

"Someone's been here."

Alejandro walked to the center of the circular room.

He slowly placed one hand against the stone wall.

"My father built this place."

"He always said..."

"'Every wall remembers.'"

Andrew looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Alejandro smiled faintly.

"It means he never wasted empty space."

He tapped the stones one by one.

Solid.

Solid.

Solid.

Then...

A hollow echo.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

"There."

Together, they pushed against the stone.

Nothing happened.

Mariana noticed an old brass plaque mounted beside the entrance.

It carried a familiar inscription.

"Lux In Tenebris."

Victor translated quietly.

"Light in darkness."

Mariana remembered Richard's hidden clue.

Follow the music.

She looked up toward the lantern room.

"Maybe..."

"The light is the key."

They climbed the winding staircase.

At the top...

The old lighthouse lens still stood in place.

Covered in dust.

Rust locked the massive rotation mechanism.

Andrew examined it carefully.

"There are scratches."

Marcus looked closer.

"Recent ones."

Someone had turned the lens recently.

Mariana grabbed the metal wheel.

"It still moves."

Together...

She and Andrew pushed with all their strength.

The ancient lens slowly rotated.

Click.

A loud metallic sound echoed from below.

Marcus smiled.

"We found it."

Back on the ground floor...

The hollow section of the wall slowly slid open.

Behind it...

A narrow stone staircase descended beneath the lighthouse.

Cold air drifted upward.

Rebecca switched on her flashlight.

"There shouldn't be anything beneath this island."

Alejandro answered quietly.

"There wasn't."

"My father built it in secret."

Deep below the lighthouse...

They entered a massive underground chamber.

The walls were lined with iron shelves.

Old journals.

Maps.

Wooden crates.

At the center stood a heavy oak table.

Resting upon it...

A large leather-bound book.

Its cover was embossed with a single raven.

Mariana slowly approached.

"The Ledger."

Before anyone could touch it—

A sharp crack echoed through the chamber.

Gunfire.

The bullet shattered the lantern hanging above the table.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Marcus shouted,

"Sniper!"

Everyone scattered.

More shots echoed through the tunnels.

The assassin had found them.

Outside...

The masked sniper smiled.

A thermal scope revealed every movement beneath the lighthouse.

He fired again.

Another bullet pierced a narrow ventilation shaft and struck the stone floor inches from Mariana.

Victor pulled her behind a pillar.

"He's using the air vents!"

Marcus shouted into his radio.

"Find his position!"

Static.

No response.

The island's rocky terrain blocked every signal.

Andrew looked toward the Ledger.

"We can't leave it."

Mariana nodded.

"I know."

Emily crawled across the floor toward the table.

"Cover me!"

Marcus and Victor returned fire through the ventilation openings.

Stone exploded around them.

The sniper adjusted his aim.

Patient.

Precise.

Waiting for Mariana to move.

Meanwhile...

The second helicopter landed on the opposite side of the island.

Four armed mercenaries emerged.

They weren't there to kill.

They were there to recover the Ledger.

Their leader checked his watch.

"The sniper has five minutes."

"Then we go in."

Inside the underground chamber...

Emily reached the oak table.

She grabbed the ancient Ledger.

The moment she lifted it—

A hidden locking mechanism released.

The floor beneath the table trembled.

Alejandro's eyes widened.

"No..."

"What happened?" Victor asked.

"My father..."

"He built one final safeguard."

The entire chamber began shaking violently.

Massive stone doors started sliding shut at both ends of the tunnel.

Marcus shouted,

"Everyone out!"

Mariana grabbed Emily's arm.

Andrew carried the Ledger.

The group sprinted toward the exit.

Behind them...

Ancient walls collapsed.

Dust filled the air.

The chamber was sealing itself forever.

Outside the lighthouse...

The mercenaries stormed the entrance just as the survivors emerged.

Gunfire erupted across the cliff.

Marcus dropped behind a stone barrier.

Victor fired twice, forcing the attackers to scatter.

Andrew protected Emily while clutching the Ledger against his chest.

The sniper saw his opportunity.

Through the scope...

Mariana stepped into the open.

He slowly squeezed the trigger.

At the last possible second—

Andrew saw the faint glint of sunlight reflecting off the rifle scope.

"Mariana!"

He shoved her sideways.

The bullet struck Andrew squarely in the shoulder.

He crashed to the ground, the Ledger slipping from his hands.

Mariana screamed,

"Andrew!"

The ancient book slid across the rain-soaked stone...

Stopping at the very edge of the cliff.

One more inch...

And it would fall into the raging Atlantic below.

Everyone froze.

Even the mercenaries.

Then...

A gust of wind flipped the Ledger open by itself.

Inside the first page...

Instead of financial records...

There was only one handwritten sentence.

"The real Ledger was never this book."

Mariana's blood ran cold.

Everything they had risked...

Everything they had sacrificed...

Had been for a decoy.

And somewhere, hidden beyond the crashing waves, the true Ledger—and the secret capable of destroying the Circle of Twelve—was still waiting to be found.
