CHAPTER 20 — The Last Clue Before the Storm

CHAPTER 20 — The Last Clue Before the Storm

The words echoed in Mariana's mind.

"The real Ledger was never this book."

For several long seconds...

No one moved.

Andrew lay on the rain-soaked ground, clutching his bleeding shoulder.

The decoy book rested at the edge of the cliff, its pages fluttering wildly in the ocean wind.

Everything they had fought for...

Had been another layer of deception.

"Medic!"

Marcus shouted as two agents rushed to Andrew.

Blood soaked through his jacket, but the bullet had passed cleanly through his shoulder.

"It missed the artery," one medic said.

"He's going to live."

Mariana dropped to her knees beside him.

Andrew managed a weak smile.

"I guess..."

"I finally protected you."

Mariana's eyes filled with tears.

"You should have protected yourself."

Andrew laughed painfully.

"I've spent four years protecting the wrong people."

"Maybe this balances... one mistake."

The firefight continued across the cliffs.

Victor coordinated the tactical teams.

"Push them toward the eastern ridge!"

Federal agents moved in from both sides.

The mercenaries realized they were being surrounded.

Their leader shouted,

"Retreat!"

Smoke grenades exploded across the rocks.

Within seconds...

The attackers disappeared into the thick fog.

Only one body remained behind.

The sniper.

Marcus cautiously approached.

The masked assassin had been killed by a single shot.

Not from the FBI.

Not from Escalante Security.

A perfect shot to the forehead.

Rebecca frowned.

"One bullet."

"Professional."

Victor looked toward the cliffs.

"Someone eliminated their own sniper."

"No witnesses."

Mariana picked up the decoy Ledger.

Most pages were blank.

But near the center...

She noticed several sheets were unusually thick.

She carefully separated them.

A folded piece of parchment slid into her hand.

It wasn't a ledger.

It was a map.

An old nautical map of the North Atlantic.

Alejandro's breathing quickened.

"I've seen this before."

Mariana looked up.

"Where?"

"My grandfather kept a painting in his office."

"He used to tell me..."

"'The greatest treasures are hidden where land and sea make the same promise.'"

Victor examined the map.

A single location had been marked with red ink.

Not on land.

Offshore.

A tiny island shaped like a crescent moon.

Beneath it were three handwritten words:

"Saint Raven Isle."

Rebecca checked the coordinates.

Her expression changed instantly.

"That's impossible."

Marcus looked at her.

"What?"

"Saint Raven Isle officially doesn't exist."

Victor frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"It disappeared from maritime charts in 1983."

Alejandro smiled grimly.

"It didn't disappear."

"It was erased."

Meanwhile...

Thousands of miles away...

Inside the Circle's hidden island fortress...

The remaining eleven leaders gathered around a circular marble table.

Margaret stood before them.

An elderly man slowly opened a velvet box.

Inside rested eleven silver rings.

One place remained empty.

Arthur's.

The old man looked at Margaret.

"Arthur is dead."

Margaret nodded.

"He became emotional."

Another woman asked,

"And Mariana?"

Margaret smiled.

"She's following the map."

The room remained silent.

Then the oldest member of the Circle spoke.

"Exactly as planned."

Margaret looked surprised.

"You expected her to find it?"

The old man nodded.

"The decoy Ledger always leads to Saint Raven Isle."

Margaret frowned.

"But the real Ledger isn't there."

"No."

"It never was."

"Then why send her?"

The old man smiled.

"Because beneath Saint Raven Isle..."

"...is the Vault."

Back at Blackwater Lighthouse...

The storm had grown stronger.

Helicopters arrived to evacuate the wounded.

Andrew was placed on a stretcher.

Before the doors closed, he reached for Mariana's hand.

"I'm done running."

She squeezed his hand gently.

"So am I."

There was no promise of forgiveness.

Not yet.

But for the first time...

There was hope.

As the rescue helicopters lifted into the sky...

Victor remained behind with Marcus.

He studied the decoy book one final time.

Something caught his attention.

The inside back cover.

A tiny brass plate had been hidden beneath the leather.

Marcus pried it loose.

Etched into the metal was a sequence of numbers.

12 – 7 – 3 – 1 – 9

Victor frowned.

"A code?"

Mariana looked at the pattern.

"No..."

"It's a combination."

"For what?" Marcus asked.

Alejandro answered quietly.

"My father's vault."

Everyone turned.

"I thought Blackwater was the vault."

Alejandro slowly shook his head.

"No."

"This place only guards the path."

"The real vault..."

"...has never been opened."

That evening...

Back at Escalante Headquarters...

Rebecca entered the temporary command center carrying an encrypted satellite message.

"It just came in."

Victor opened the file.

His face immediately lost all color.

"What happened?" Mariana asked.

Victor slowly turned the screen toward everyone.

A live satellite image.

The Atlantic Ocean.

Saint Raven Isle.

At the center of the island...

Construction lights illuminated an enormous excavation site.

The Circle had already arrived.

They weren't searching.

They were digging.

Mariana stared at the image.

"They know."

Alejandro nodded.

"They've always known."

Victor zoomed in further.

A giant steel door had been uncovered beneath the island.

Across its weathered surface...

An engraved family crest appeared.

Not the Collins crest.

Not the Escalante crest.

A third crest.

Older than both families.

Around it were twelve empty keyholes.

And beneath them, carved in ancient Latin, were the words:

"Only the Thirteenth Heir may enter."

Silence consumed the room.

Mariana looked at her father.

"What does that mean?"

Alejandro closed his eyes.

For years, he had hidden the final truth.

Now...

He could hide it no longer.

"There were never twelve founding families..."

He opened his eyes and looked directly at Mariana.

"There were thirteen."

"And the thirteenth bloodline..."

"...is ours."

The room fell completely silent.

Outside, thunder rolled across the night sky.

The war for the Collins fortune was over.

May you like

The war for a century-old secret had just begun.
