CHAPTER 2 — The Morning Everything Was Gone

CHAPTER 2 — The Morning Everything Was Gone
Andrew Collins had always believed that power arrived with the sunrise.
Every morning, he woke before six, reviewed overnight market reports, barked orders into his phone, and watched the city from the floor-to-ceiling windows of his mansion.
It reminded him that everything below belonged to him.
This morning...
The city looked exactly the same.
Only his empire had vanished.
At precisely 6:00 a.m., his phone exploded with notifications.
Missed Call (18)
Emergency Board Meeting
URGENT — Banking Division
Immediate Action Required
Andrew frowned.
He reached for the phone.
Before he could unlock it—
It rang again.
"Daniel."
His Chief Financial Officer.
Andrew answered immediately.
"What now?"
Daniel's breathing was uneven.
"Andrew..."
"You need to get to headquarters."
"What happened?"
"Everything."
Andrew sat upright.
"What does that mean?"
"Our operating accounts are frozen."
"Our payroll accounts are frozen."
"The international investment fund rejected our authorization."
"The Singapore branch says our ownership credentials are invalid."
Andrew laughed.
"This isn't funny."
"I'm not joking."
"We can't move one dollar."
Brenda slowly opened her eyes.
"What's wrong?"
Andrew climbed out of bed.
"Nothing."
"It's probably a cyberattack."
He said it confidently.
He wanted to believe it himself.
Ten minutes later...
Margaret stormed downstairs wearing an expensive silk robe.
"What kind of idiot schedules meetings before breakfast?"
She noticed Andrew pulling on his suit jacket.
"Where are you going?"
"Headquarters."
"Again?"
"The finance department is overreacting."
Margaret rolled her eyes.
"I told you to replace those accountants years ago."
"They panic over everything."
Then...
The mansion's head butler entered.
His face was pale.
"Mr. Collins..."
"What?"
"The household cards have been declined."
Andrew barely looked up.
"So?"
"We'll use another account."
The butler swallowed.
"We tried."
"All of them."
Silence.
Margaret frowned.
"What do you mean all of them?"
"The bank says..."
"...all family spending privileges have been suspended."
Brenda laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
Andrew grabbed his wallet.
He pulled out a platinum card.
"The limit on this card is unlimited."
"Let's test it."
Five minutes later...
Inside the mansion's private wine cellar...
Andrew scanned the card through the inventory system to authorize a rare wine purchase.
DECLINED.
He frowned.
Tried another.
DECLINED.
Another.
DECLINED.
His smile disappeared.
At exactly 6:47 a.m.
Andrew's personal banker finally answered.
"Andrew."
"Fix this."
There was a long silence.
"I'm afraid..."
"There is nothing I can do."
"What are you talking about?"
"The instructions came from above."
"I'm your largest client."
"You were."
Andrew froze.
"What does that mean?"
The banker lowered his voice.
"The Collins Family Trust no longer has signing authority."
Andrew's heart skipped.
"Who does?"
"I'm not authorized to tell you."
The line went dead.
For the first time...
Andrew felt something he hadn't experienced in years.
Fear.
Across town...
Escalante Global Headquarters was already buzzing with activity.
Lawyers moved between conference rooms.
Financial analysts monitored screens.
Investment executives reviewed international transfers.
Every department had one objective.
Complete the takeover before noon.
Mariana stood quietly inside her father's office.
The city stretched beneath her.
She hadn't slept.
She hadn't needed to.
Victor entered carrying another stack of documents.
"The European banks have complied."
She nodded.
"Asia?"
"Finished."
"North America?"
"Eighty-seven percent complete."
Victor smiled.
"They never expected the ownership structure."
Mariana walked toward the window.
"Neither did Andrew."
Years earlier...
When Andrew's company stood on the edge of bankruptcy...
Mariana had invested.
Not directly.
Never under her own name.
She had created layers of holding companies.
Private trusts.
International investment funds.
Everything legal.
Everything documented.
Every dollar that rescued Andrew came from Escalante-controlled entities.
Andrew believed wealthy investors had saved him.
He never realized...
Those investors all answered to Mariana.
Her father walked into the office.
Without a word...
He handed her a tablet.
On the screen—
Live security footage.
Andrew had just arrived at Collins Group Headquarters.
The lobby looked different today.
Employees stood in small groups whispering.
No one greeted him.
No one smiled.
Andrew ignored them.
He marched toward the executive elevators.
His access card beeped.
ACCESS DENIED
He frowned.
Tried again.
ACCESS DENIED
A security guard approached carefully.
"Mr. Collins..."
"What?"
"I'm sorry."
"The executive elevators have been restricted."
Andrew stared at him.
"Restricted?"
"For whom?"
The guard hesitated.
"For you."
Andrew laughed.
"You must be new."
"I own this building."
The guard looked embarrassed.
"I received direct orders."
Before Andrew could respond—
The elevator doors opened.
Out stepped six corporate security officers.
Behind them...
Victor Hale.
Andrew recognized him immediately.
"The Escalante lawyer?"
Victor adjusted his tie.
"Good morning, Mr. Collins."
"What are you doing here?"
"I've come to deliver legal notice."
Andrew frowned.
"What legal notice?"
Victor handed him a sealed envelope.
Andrew opened it.
His eyes moved across the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
His face slowly turned white.
NOTICE OF EXECUTIVE REMOVAL
Effective immediately...
Andrew Collins was removed as CEO.
Removed as Chairman.
Removed from every voting position.
Effective immediately...
Control of Collins Group transferred to majority shareholder...
Escalante International Holdings.
Andrew looked up.
"This is fake."
Victor remained calm.
"It was approved by seventy-eight percent of voting shares."
"I own fifty-one percent."
Victor shook his head.
"You believed you did."
Andrew's voice became louder.
"Who bought my shares?"
"No one."
"You never owned them."
The words echoed inside Andrew's head.
Impossible.
Impossible.
Impossible.
Victor opened another folder.
"There are seventy-three holding companies."
"Twelve investment funds."
"Four charitable trusts."
"Three international banks."
"Every one of them ultimately belongs to the Escalante family."
Andrew couldn't breathe.
"No..."
Victor looked directly into his eyes.
"The woman you called worthless last night..."
"...owns your company."
The entire lobby became silent.
Employees stopped pretending not to watch.
Some quietly recorded everything on their phones.
Andrew tore through the documents.
"There has to be a mistake."
"There isn't."
"My wife doesn't have this kind of money."
Victor gave a faint smile.
"Your wife?"
"No."
"Miss Mariana Escalante."
"The sole heir to the Escalante Global Empire."
Upstairs...
From the executive office...
Mariana watched everything through the live security cameras.
She didn't smile.
She didn't celebrate.
She simply watched the truth reach the man who had destroyed their marriage.
Her assistant stepped beside her.
"Shall we let him into the boardroom?"
Mariana looked at the monitor.
Andrew was shouting.
Demanding answers.
Threatening lawsuits.
Threatening everyone.
Just as he always had.
She thought of the slap.
Of Brenda's smile.
Of Margaret's laughter.
Then she answered.
"Not yet."
"Let him wait."
Back in the lobby...
Andrew's phone rang.
It was Brenda.
He answered immediately.
"What?"
Her voice shook.
"Andrew..."
"The mansion..."
"What about it?"
"There are lawyers here."
"And police."
"They're saying..."
Her voice broke.
"They're saying we no longer own the house."
Andrew's hand slowly loosened.
The phone slipped from his fingers.
It hit the marble floor with a loud crack.
For the first time in his life...
Andrew Collins realized he had never truly understood the woman he married.
And somewhere above him...
Mariana signed one final document.
The document that would trigger Phase Three.
The phase that would destroy not only Andrew's fortune...
May you like
But every secret he had buried over the last four years.
