CHAPTER 15 — The Uncle She Never Knew

No one spoke.
The photograph slipped slightly in Mariana's trembling fingers.
She looked from the faded image...
To Arthur Blackwood.
Then to her father.
Alejandro Escalante.
His face had gone completely pale.
It was the first time in Mariana's life she had ever seen fear in his eyes.
Not anger.
Not determination.
Fear.
Mariana held up the photograph.
"Father..."
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"...what is he talking about?"
Alejandro remained silent.
Arthur answered instead.
"Tell her."
Alejandro looked away.
"Tell your daughter who I really am."
The silence became unbearable.
Finally...
Alejandro closed his eyes.
"My name wasn't always Alejandro Escalante."
Everyone froze.
Andrew stared at him.
"What?"
Alejandro slowly sat down on an old wooden crate.
For the first time in decades...
He looked like an old man.
"We were born Alejandro Blackwood..."
"...and Arthur Blackwood."
Mariana felt the ground disappear beneath her.
Twins.
Her father...
And Arthur...
Were brothers.
Victor lowered his head.
"You never told me."
Alejandro nodded.
"Very few people know."
Arthur laughed quietly.
"He made sure of that."
Mariana looked between them.
"If you're brothers..."
"Then why..."
Arthur finished the question.
"...did we become enemies?"
He looked at the old vault.
"Because greed destroys families."
Alejandro immediately replied.
"No."
"Because your greed destroyed ours."
Arthur's smile faded.
Alejandro stood.
"When our father died..."
"The company was drowning in debt."
Arthur interrupted.
"You inherited everything."
Alejandro shook his head.
"I inherited responsibility."
"You inherited resentment."
Arthur laughed bitterly.
"Convenient version of history."
Victor quietly stepped beside Mariana.
"Miss Escalante."
She didn't move.
He whispered,
"This changes nothing."
Mariana wasn't sure.
Everything she had believed about her family had just changed.
Arthur slowly walked toward the center of the room.
"Our father wanted us to build the company together."
"He believed two brothers were stronger than one."
Alejandro answered coldly.
"You were gambling company money."
"I was investing."
"You nearly bankrupted us."
"I was trying to save us!"
Their voices echoed through the vault.
Thirty years of hatred exploding all at once.
Andrew looked at Emily.
Neither of them understood what they were witnessing.
This wasn't simply corporate revenge.
It was a family war that had lasted for decades.
Arthur's eyes suddenly softened as he looked at Mariana.
"When you were born..."
"I held you before anyone else."
Mariana stared at him.
"You carried me?"
Arthur smiled sadly.
"You grabbed my finger and refused to let go."
He laughed quietly.
"I thought..."
"...one day I'd teach you everything I knew."
Alejandro's face darkened.
"You lost that right."
"When you betrayed us."
Arthur looked directly at him.
"I never betrayed you."
"You betrayed me."
Marcus interrupted sharply.
"Enough."
"This conversation can continue in court."
He stepped forward with handcuffs.
"Arthur Blackwood..."
"You're under arrest."
Arthur calmly raised both hands.
"I expected this."
Marcus moved closer.
Closer.
Five feet.
Four.
Three.
Then—
Arthur smiled.
"You still haven't figured it out."
Marcus stopped.
"What?"
Arthur looked at the tactical team surrounding him.
"Count your people."
Marcus frowned.
He looked around.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four...
His expression changed.
"We're missing two officers."
Before anyone could react—
Two members of the Escalante tactical team suddenly raised their rifles.
Not at Arthur.
At Marcus.
At Victor.
At Alejandro.
They had been impostors all along.
Marcus cursed.
"Infiltrators!"
Arthur smiled.
"My organization doesn't break into institutions."
"It grows inside them."
The two fake officers quickly moved beside Arthur.
One handed him a small black case.
Arthur opened it.
Inside...
A portable encrypted drive.
Daniel looked relieved.
"The archive."
Victor's face darkened.
"They got the Legacy Files."
Arthur nodded.
"That was always the mission."
Mariana looked at the drive.
"What's inside?"
Arthur answered honestly.
"Everything."
"The original ownership agreements."
"Political contacts."
"Private banking networks."
"The names of every silent partner who helped build both empires."
Victor whispered,
"If those files reach the wrong hands..."
Arthur smiled.
"The world becomes very expensive."
Marcus slowly lowered his weapon.
Too many people were standing in the line of fire.
One mistake...
Could kill Mariana.
Arthur noticed.
"Smart decision."
Andrew suddenly stepped forward.
"Enough."
Everyone turned.
Arthur looked amused.
"You?"
Andrew nodded.
"For years..."
"I blamed everyone except myself."
He looked at Mariana.
"I failed my wife."
He looked at Emily.
"I failed my sister."
Then...
He looked directly at Arthur.
"But I won't let you destroy another family."
Arthur laughed.
"You think you're finally a hero?"
Andrew didn't answer.
Instead...
He lunged.
Arthur stumbled backward in surprise.
The encrypted drive flew from his hands.
It slid across the concrete floor.
Mariana ran toward it.
One of the fake officers raised his rifle.
Marcus fired first.
The bullet struck the rifle, knocking it sideways.
Gunfire erupted.
The vault descended into chaos.
Andrew tackled Arthur to the ground.
The two men crashed into rows of steel archive shelves.
Folders rained down around them.
Arthur struck Andrew across the face with his cane.
Andrew barely reacted.
Years of guilt had become something stronger.
Determination.
Meanwhile...
Mariana reached the encrypted drive.
She picked it up—
Only to feel a cold metal barrel pressed gently against the back of her head.
A familiar female voice whispered,
"I wouldn't do that..."
Mariana froze.
Slowly...
She turned.
Standing behind her...
Holding the gun...
Was Margaret Collins.
No one had seen her enter the vault.
She smiled calmly.
"You've all been looking at Arthur."
"But you've been forgetting..."
"...I never lose."
Margaret cocked the pistol.
Then looked at Arthur.
"My dear..."
"You've become sentimental."
Arthur slowly stood.
His expression no longer confident.
For the first time...
He looked... concerned.
Margaret smiled.
"You really believed you were the one in charge?"
Silence filled the underground vault.
Then Margaret laughed.
A cold...
Terrifying laugh.
She looked directly at Mariana.
Then spoke the words that changed everything.
"Arthur isn't the Chairman."
She slowly placed one finger on her own chest.
May you like
"I am."
