CHAPTER 14 — The Man Behind the Vault

CHAPTER 14 — The Man Behind the Vault

A deep metallic groan echoed through the underground chamber.

The massive steel vault door slowly swung inward.

No one touched it.

No one stood near the control panel.

It had been unlocked...

From the inside.

Marcus instinctively raised his weapon.

"Everyone behind me."

Mariana didn't move.

Her eyes remained fixed on the darkness beyond the vault.

Daniel Mercer smiled.

"I told you."

"You're too late."

The heavy door opened completely.

Footsteps echoed from within.

Slow.

Measured.

Confident.

A man emerged from the shadows wearing a charcoal-gray suit and white gloves.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

A polished cane rested in his right hand.

He appeared to be in his late sixties.

Elegant.

Composed.

Completely unafraid.

Andrew stared at him.

"I know you..."

The man smiled politely.

"Of course you do."

"I attended your wedding."

Mariana's heart skipped.

She recognized him too.

For years he had attended Escalante charity galas.

Board dinners.

Foundation events.

Always quiet.

Always respectful.

Always forgettable.

Victor whispered in disbelief,

"...Arthur Blackwood."

Arthur Blackwood.

Chairman of the Escalante Children's Foundation.

Trusted family adviser.

Philanthropist.

One of Alejandro Escalante's oldest business associates.

Alejandro slowly stepped forward.

"So..."

"It was you."

Arthur inclined his head.

"It always was."

Silence settled over the vault.

Mariana looked directly into Arthur's eyes.

"You murdered Richard Collins."

Arthur's expression didn't change.

"I ordered his death."

Andrew felt his knees weaken.

The confession came without hesitation.

Without guilt.

Without remorse.

"And Edward Grayson?"

Arthur smiled faintly.

"He became... inconvenient."

Emily covered her mouth.

"You monster."

Arthur looked at her almost sympathetically.

"Miss Collins..."

"History has never been written by innocent people."

Marcus tightened his grip on his weapon.

"You're under arrest."

Arthur laughed.

"By whom?"

"The police are upstairs."

Arthur shook his head.

"They're exactly where I wanted them."

Victor frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur looked at his watch.

"They're searching empty offices."

"While my people complete the real operation."

Daniel stepped beside Arthur.

"The transfer is nearly complete."

Victor immediately turned to the tactical officer.

"Check the financial systems!"

The officer pulled out his tablet.

His face lost all color.

"The emergency reserve..."

"What about it?"

"It's gone."

"All of it."

"Every account."

Mariana remained calm.

"How much?"

The officer swallowed.

"Nine point four billion dollars."

Andrew stared at Daniel.

"You betrayed me."

Daniel looked at him without emotion.

"You never noticed me."

"You never respected anyone beneath you."

"I simply stopped pretending."

Andrew looked away.

He couldn't deny it.

Arthur slowly walked toward Mariana.

Stopping only a few feet away.

"I've waited twenty-five years to meet you properly."

Mariana's expression remained cold.

"You've met me many times."

"No."

"I met Alejandro's daughter."

"Today..."

"I finally meet Alejandro's successor."

Alejandro stepped between them.

"You'll never touch her."

Arthur smiled.

"My old friend..."

"I already have."

He looked at Mariana.

"Who convinced Andrew to install the new biometric security system?"

Mariana's eyes narrowed.

"Daniel."

Daniel nodded.

"Who recommended Daniel?"

Victor suddenly looked toward Alejandro.

Alejandro froze.

Arthur answered for him.

"You did."

Silence.

Arthur's words struck like lightning.

Alejandro had unknowingly opened the door to his own destruction.

Mariana spoke quietly.

"You spent years planning this."

Arthur nodded.

"Thirty-two."

Andrew frowned.

"Why?"

Arthur slowly turned toward the old vault.

"My father helped build the Escalante empire."

"He died with nothing."

"Alejandro inherited everything."

Alejandro's voice hardened.

"Your father stole from the company."

Arthur smiled.

"He borrowed."

"He was convicted."

"He betrayed thousands of employees."

Arthur's smile disappeared.

"He was sacrificed."

The tension in the room became unbearable.

Arthur looked directly at Mariana.

"I don't hate your family."

"I simply believe..."

"...what was taken..."

"...should be returned."

Mariana answered immediately.

"So you murdered people."

Arthur shrugged.

"They chose the wrong side."

Suddenly...

Victor's phone vibrated.

He looked down.

Then smiled.

Arthur noticed.

"What?"

Victor slowly raised the phone.

"You're stalling."

Arthur frowned.

Victor continued.

"So are we."

Arthur's smile faded for the first time.

Marcus pressed a hidden button on his watch.

A green light flashed.

Arthur turned sharply toward Daniel.

"What happened?"

Daniel checked his tablet.

His face turned pale.

"The transfer stopped."

Arthur grabbed the device.

"No..."

Every account that had been draining moments earlier...

Had frozen.

Victor smiled calmly.

"You hacked our systems."

"But you forgot one thing."

Arthur narrowed his eyes.

"What?"

Victor looked proudly at Mariana.

"She never kept the real emergency reserves inside Escalante Global."

Silence.

Arthur stared at Mariana.

Mariana calmly reached into her handbag.

She removed a slim black security token.

"For four years..."

"I expected someone to betray us."

She held up the device.

"So I built another network."

Victor finished the sentence.

"Offline."

"Completely independent."

"The accounts you stole..."

Mariana smiled for the first time that night.

"...were decoys."

Daniel's face turned white.

Arthur's expression hardened.

For the first time in decades...

He realized he had underestimated someone.

Not Alejandro.

Not Victor.

Mariana.

But Arthur suddenly laughed.

A slow.

Confident.

Unsettling laugh.

"You've become even smarter than your father."

Mariana remained silent.

Arthur slipped his hand into his coat.

Marcus immediately raised his pistol.

"Don't move!"

Arthur ignored him.

Instead...

He removed a faded photograph.

He tossed it onto the floor at Mariana's feet.

She picked it up.

Her breathing stopped.

The photograph showed...

A little girl.

About six years old.

Holding Alejandro's hand.

Mariana.

Standing beside them...

Was Arthur.

Smiling.

Like family.

Mariana slowly looked up.

"What is this?"

Arthur's eyes grew strangely soft.

He whispered one sentence that shattered everything she thought she knew.

"I wasn't always your enemy..."

A long pause.

Then—

"...because once..."

May you like

"...I was your uncle."
