CHAPTER 17 — The Circle of Twelve

CHAPTER 17 — The Circle of Twelve
No one spoke after Margaret's final words.
"There are twelve more."
The sentence echoed through the underground vault long after the FBI agents had secured her wrists with steel handcuffs.
Victor stared at her.
"You expect us to believe that?"
Margaret smiled.
"I don't care what you believe."
"I care what you'll discover."
Two agents escorted her toward the exit.
Before disappearing into the corridor, she looked over her shoulder at Mariana.
"You inherited an empire."
"You also inherited its enemies."
Then she disappeared behind the closing security doors.
Silence returned.
Arthur Blackwood's body still lay beside the vault entrance.
Daniel Mercer sat on the floor, his hands bound behind his back, staring blankly at the concrete.
The empire he had helped betray had survived.
The organization he had devoted fifteen years to...
Had abandoned him.
Andrew walked slowly toward Mariana.
He stopped a few feet away.
"I..."
The words wouldn't come.
Mariana looked at him quietly.
"You don't owe me an explanation tonight."
Andrew lowered his eyes.
"I owe you much more than that."
Hours later...
Escalante Global Headquarters was surrounded by federal investigators.
Every floor had become an active crime scene.
Computers were seized.
Servers dismantled.
Boxes of financial records were carried out under armed guard.
News helicopters circled overhead.
The story had already become international.
Inside the executive conference room...
Victor stood before a massive digital screen.
Maps covered the walls.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Corporate ownership charts.
FBI Special Agent Rebecca Hayes entered carrying a classified folder.
"We've verified Margaret's identity."
Victor frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Rebecca placed the folder on the table.
"The woman you've known as Margaret Collins..."
"...wasn't born Margaret Collins."
Andrew looked up sharply.
"What?"
Rebecca opened the file.
Her birth certificate carried a different name.
Margaret Sinclair.
Alejandro's expression hardened.
"The Sinclair family..."
Rebecca nodded.
"They disappeared thirty-eight years ago."
"Officially."
Victor folded his arms.
"Unofficially?"
"They were one of Europe's largest private banking dynasties."
Andrew frowned.
"I've never heard of them."
Rebecca answered quietly.
"That's because they vanished after an international financial scandal."
Mariana looked at the old black-and-white family photograph inside the file.
Margaret.
As a young woman.
Standing beside eleven other people.
Each face had been marked with a numbered circle.
One through twelve.
Victor slowly pointed.
"The Circle."
Rebecca nodded.
"We've spent twenty years trying to identify them."
Emily whispered,
"Twelve..."
Victor looked at her.
"Margaret wasn't speaking metaphorically."
Rebecca continued.
"There are twelve families."
"Twelve financial empires."
"Twelve leaders."
"They call themselves..."
The Circle of Twelve.
The room fell silent.
Rebecca spread another document across the table.
A map of the world.
Red dots appeared across multiple countries.
New York.
London.
Geneva.
Dubai.
Singapore.
Tokyo.
São Paulo.
Each location represented one member of the Circle.
Victor felt a chill.
"This isn't organized crime."
Rebecca nodded.
"No."
"This is a parallel financial government."
Andrew slowly sat down.
"My father..."
"He was fighting this?"
Rebecca looked at him.
"So was Richard."
"So was Alejandro."
"So were several others."
Mariana frowned.
"And they all died."
Rebecca didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Marcus entered carrying a sealed evidence box.
"We found this inside Arthur's private office."
Victor carefully opened it.
Inside...
Twelve identical black folders.
Only one remained.
The other eleven spaces were empty.
Each folder slot carried a silver number.
Folder One.
Folder Two.
Folder Three...
The remaining folder bore the number...
Seven.
Victor carefully opened it.
Inside was a list of names.
Bank accounts.
Private airfields.
Encrypted communication codes.
At the bottom...
One handwritten sentence.
If Folder Seven has been opened...
The Circle has already begun moving.
Rebecca looked grim.
"That means the other eleven leaders have already been warned."
Meanwhile...
Inside a high-security federal detention center...
Margaret sat alone in a reinforced interrogation room.
Her expression remained calm.
The steel door opened.
A federal prosecutor entered.
"You've been charged with multiple counts of murder."
Margaret smiled.
"I know."
"You'll spend the rest of your life in prison."
Margaret looked at the security camera mounted above the door.
"No."
The prosecutor frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret leaned back comfortably.
"It means..."
"...I won't be here tomorrow."
Across the city...
Mariana finally returned to the Escalante family residence.
The mansion felt different.
Quieter.
The staff greeted her with genuine respect.
Not fear.
Not obligation.
Respect.
She walked alone into her late mother's private study.
A room that had remained locked since the funeral.
Alejandro quietly handed her a small key.
"Your mother wanted you to have this."
Mariana unlocked the final drawer of the old desk.
Inside rested a velvet box.
She opened it slowly.
A simple gold necklace.
And beneath it...
A handwritten letter.
Addressed only to her.
For My Daughter — Read Only When You Stand Alone.
Mariana unfolded the letter.
Her mother's elegant handwriting filled the page.
My dearest Mariana,
If you are reading this, it means the war has finally reached you.
Mariana's eyes widened.
The next sentence made her blood run cold.
Never trust the FBI completely.
One member of the Circle has worn their badge for years.
At that exact moment...
Victor's secure phone rang.
He answered immediately.
His face turned white.
Mariana looked up.
"What happened?"
Victor swallowed hard.
"The detention center..."
"What about it?"
"They've just reported..."
He paused.
"...Margaret Collins escaped."
The room fell completely silent.
Then another message arrived on Victor's phone.
A photograph.
Taken less than a minute ago.
It showed Margaret standing on the deck of a private yacht somewhere at sea.
She was smiling.
Holding a glass of champagne.
Behind her...
Eleven shadowed figures stood in a perfect circle.
Margaret had not been rescued.
May you like
She had returned home.
