CHAPTER 5 — The Necklace That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 5 — The Necklace That Changed Everything

The room fell silent.

Mariana stared at Victor as if she'd misheard him.

"The necklace..."

Victor nodded once.

"It was recovered thirty minutes ago."

Alejandro slowly removed his glasses.

"Where?"

Victor placed a sealed evidence bag on the desk.

Inside, resting on black velvet, was the emerald necklace Margaret had claimed was stolen.

Every emerald sparkled under the office lights.

Untouched.

Undamaged.

Exactly as it had been before the party.

"It was found inside Brenda's penthouse."

Mariana didn't move.

She simply looked at the necklace.

The piece of jewelry that had cost her marriage.

The piece of jewelry that had become the excuse for Andrew's hand across her face.

Victor continued.

"The investigators searched the apartment after obtaining a financial crimes warrant."

"They weren't looking for the necklace."

"They were tracing several offshore transactions."

"They discovered this hidden inside a locked safe."

Mariana's eyes narrowed.

"A safe?"

"Yes."

"Who opened it?"

"Brenda."

Victor paused.

"She claimed she had never seen the necklace before."

Alejandro let out a cold laugh.

"Of course she did."

Mariana slowly picked up the evidence report.

Every detail was there.

Item recovered: Escalante Emerald Necklace.

Location: Brenda Lawson's private residence.

Status: Original certification confirmed.

There was no doubt.

Someone had hidden it there.

Or...

Brenda had hidden it herself.

Meanwhile...

Across the city...

Brenda sat alone inside the Collins mansion.

Her hands trembled as she stared at the television.

Every major business channel carried the same headline.

BREAKING: COLLINS GROUP LOSES CORPORATE CONTROL.

MYSTERY INVESTMENT EMPIRE REVEALED.

WHO IS MARIANA ESCALANTE?

The anchor continued.

"Sources confirm that Mariana Escalante is the only daughter of billionaire Alejandro Escalante..."

Brenda grabbed the remote.

"No..."

She switched channels.

Same story.

Another channel.

Same headline.

Another.

Again.

Mariana's face appeared on every screen.

Elegant.

Confident.

Powerful.

The woman Brenda had mocked less than twenty-four hours earlier.

The front door suddenly opened.

Andrew walked inside.

He looked exhausted.

His tie was loose.

His eyes were bloodshot.

Brenda rushed toward him.

"Andrew!"

He didn't hug her.

He didn't even look at her.

"Where's my mother?"

"In the library."

Andrew walked past Brenda without another word.

Margaret stood beside the fireplace.

The moment she saw her son, she asked,

"Did you fix it?"

Andrew didn't answer.

Instead...

He handed her a copy of the ownership documents.

Margaret read the first page.

Then the second.

Her hands began shaking.

"This..."

"This says Mariana owns..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Andrew finally spoke.

"It's all true."

Margaret looked up.

"No."

"This has to be forged."

Andrew laughed bitterly.

"I wish it were."

Silence filled the room.

Then Margaret whispered,

"I slapped the wrong woman."

Andrew closed his eyes.

"No."

"I did."

Before either of them could speak again—

The doorbell rang.

One of the household staff entered.

"Mr. Collins..."

"There are detectives here."

Andrew frowned.

"What now?"

"They're asking to speak with Miss Brenda Lawson."

Brenda's face turned white.

"Me?"

The lead detective entered calmly.

"Miss Lawson?"

"Yes..."

"We have a few questions regarding an item recovered from your residence."

Andrew slowly turned toward Brenda.

"What item?"

The detective answered.

"The missing emerald necklace."

The room froze.

Brenda's mouth fell open.

"I..."

"I don't know anything about that."

The detective opened a folder.

"The necklace was found inside your personal safe."

"That's impossible!"

"We also recovered surveillance footage from your building."

He placed several photographs on the table.

Brenda looked down.

Her face lost all color.

The photos showed her entering the apartment the night before the party.

Holding a small velvet jewelry box.

The same box Margaret had displayed during the accusation.

Andrew stared at the photographs.

Then at Brenda.

"What is this?"

Brenda backed away.

"I can explain."

"Explain."

"I didn't steal it."

"Then why was it in your safe?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I..."

"I was only trying to help."

Andrew's voice grew colder.

"Help who?"

Brenda hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Andrew stepped closer.

"Tell me the truth."

She lowered her head.

"It wasn't my idea."

The room became silent.

Margaret frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Brenda whispered,

"I didn't plan it."

"Who did?"

She looked toward Margaret.

Very slowly.

Very carefully.

"I was following instructions."

Margaret's expression froze.

"What are you talking about?"

Brenda's voice shook.

"You said..."

She stopped herself.

Andrew's eyes widened.

"My mother?"

Margaret immediately snapped,

"She's lying!"

"I never told her anything!"

Brenda looked terrified.

"You told me Mariana would never fight back."

"You said if the necklace disappeared..."

Andrew turned sharply toward his mother.

"Mother..."

Margaret panicked.

"Andrew, don't listen to her!"

But Brenda continued crying.

"You said once Andrew believed Mariana stole it..."

"He'd finally divorce her."

Andrew couldn't speak.

His mother...

Had planned everything?

Margaret pointed at Brenda.

"She manipulated you!"

Brenda screamed back,

"No!"

"You told me Mariana was weak!"

"You promised she'd leave quietly!"

"You said Andrew would marry me!"

The room erupted into chaos.

At Escalante Headquarters...

Victor's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

Then smiled faintly.

Mariana looked up.

"What happened?"

"The Collins family has begun turning on each other."

Alejandro nodded.

"It was inevitable."

Victor looked at Mariana.

"There is more."

"The detectives believe Brenda is prepared to cooperate."

Mariana remained silent.

"In exchange for immunity..."

"She wants to testify."

Alejandro raised an eyebrow.

"Against Andrew?"

Victor slowly shook his head.

"No."

"Against Margaret."

Mariana looked toward the city skyline.

For years, Margaret had convinced everyone that she controlled the Collins family.

She believed wealth gave her absolute power.

Now...

The very woman she'd welcomed into her home was about to destroy her.

But before Mariana could respond—

Her private phone rang.

Only three people in the world had that number.

She answered.

"Mariana speaking."

A nervous female voice whispered,

"Please don't hang up."

Mariana frowned.

"Who is this?"

"My name is Emily Collins."

Mariana searched her memory.

Collins.

The surname struck her immediately.

"I'm Andrew's younger sister."

Mariana said nothing.

Emily's voice cracked.

"I know what my family did to you."

"I know about the necklace."

"And I know something even they don't know."

Mariana's expression changed.

"What do you know?"

Emily took a deep breath.

"My father..."

She paused.

"...didn't die of a heart attack."

Mariana's heart skipped.

Andrew's father had died three years earlier.

The official cause had always been listed as natural causes.

Emily whispered one final sentence.

"I think someone in my own family murdered him."

The line went dead.

Mariana slowly lowered the phone.

Alejandro and Victor exchanged uneasy glances.

The necklace had been only the beginning.

Now...

A far darker secret was beginning to surface.

And if Emily was telling the truth...

The Collins family wasn't just built on lies.

May you like

It was built on murder.
