CHAPTER 18 — The Twelve Shadows

CHAPTER 18 — The Twelve Shadows

Victor slowly placed the phone on the conference table.

No one reached for it.

No one had to.

The image was burned into every mind.

Margaret.

Free.

Standing on the deck of a luxury yacht.

Behind her...

Eleven figures dressed in black stood in a perfect circle.

Twelve leaders.

One organization.

One impossible enemy.

Mariana picked up the phone.

She zoomed in on the photograph.

The faces remained hidden.

But each person wore the same object.

A silver signet ring engraved with a raven spreading its wings.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

"The Raven Circle."

Rebecca Hayes shook her head.

"No."

"The raven is only their symbol."

"They call themselves..."

The Custodians.

"They believe the world's greatest fortunes should never belong to governments."

"They believe wealth should be inherited only by those they choose."

Andrew stared at the photograph.

"So they decide who becomes powerful."

Rebecca nodded.

"And who loses everything."

Alejandro spoke quietly.

"They didn't just manipulate businesses."

"They manipulated history."

Mariana returned to her mother's letter.

She read the next paragraph aloud.

If Margaret has revealed herself, then she has already accepted losing the Collins family.

That means her real objective lies elsewhere.

Don't chase her first.

Find the Ledger.

Victor frowned.

"The Ledger?"

Alejandro's expression immediately changed.

"No..."

Marcus looked at him.

"You know what that is."

Alejandro slowly nodded.

"I hoped it had been destroyed."

Everyone waited.

Alejandro took a deep breath.

"Forty years ago, before Escalante Global became a multinational empire..."

"My father kept a handwritten ledger."

Andrew frowned.

"A financial record?"

Alejandro shook his head.

"No."

"It recorded every secret agreement made between the twelve founding families."

"The legal ones."

"The illegal ones."

"The betrayals."

"The murders."

Rebecca looked stunned.

"If that ledger exists..."

"It could expose everyone."

Victor immediately asked,

"Where is it?"

Alejandro answered with quiet certainty.

"I don't know."

"My father hid it before he died."

"But he once told me..."

"'If the world ever needs the truth...'"

"'Follow the lighthouse.'"

Across the Atlantic Ocean...

The luxury yacht sliced through the dark water.

Margaret stood at the bow.

The wind swept through her silver hair.

One of the eleven figures stepped forward.

A tall woman wearing a white mask.

"You failed."

Margaret didn't turn around.

"I completed my assignment."

"The Escalante fortune still exists."

Margaret smiled faintly.

"So does Mariana."

The masked woman remained silent.

Finally, she asked,

"Do you regret letting her live?"

Margaret looked toward the horizon.

"No."

"If she survives..."

"She'll lead us to the Ledger."

The other figures exchanged glances.

One elderly man spoke for the first time.

"And if she doesn't?"

Margaret answered without hesitation.

"Then we find it ourselves."

Back in New York...

Escalante Headquarters had become a joint command center.

The FBI.

Interpol.

Financial Crimes.

Cybersecurity experts.

Every screen displayed maps, timelines, and financial flows.

Victor walked toward Rebecca.

"I want everything your agency has on the Custodians."

Rebecca hesitated.

"I'll share what I can."

Victor noticed her hesitation.

"What aren't you telling us?"

Rebecca looked around before lowering her voice.

"Your mother's letter..."

Mariana looked up.

"It said one of them wears an FBI badge."

Rebecca nodded slowly.

"We've suspected that for years."

"But we never proved it."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"So we trust no one."

Rebecca sighed.

"Not until we know who the mole is."

Meanwhile...

Andrew sat alone in Richard Collins' old office.

His father's journal lay open on the desk.

He had read nearly every page.

Until...

He noticed something unusual.

Several pages had slightly thicker paper.

He held one toward the lamp.

Hidden writing slowly appeared beneath the ink.

Lemon juice.

Invisible ink.

Richard had written between the lines.

Andrew quickly photographed the pages and enlarged them.

A hidden message emerged.

If Alejandro tells you to follow the lighthouse...

Go beneath it.

The truth was never above the light.

It sleeps below the sea.

Andrew's heart pounded.

He immediately called Mariana.

"I found something."

An hour later...

Everyone gathered around the enlarged images.

Victor studied the hidden message.

"Beneath the lighthouse..."

Marcus unfolded a coastal map.

"There are dozens."

Alejandro suddenly pointed to one location.

"No."

"Only one."

He tapped a tiny island off the coast of Maine.

Blackwater Lighthouse.

"My father built it."

Emily looked confused.

"Why would a businessman build a lighthouse?"

Alejandro smiled sadly.

"He didn't."

"My grandfather did."

"Long before there was an empire."

"It was our family's first investment."

Victor looked at the map.

"The island has been abandoned for thirty years."

Rebecca frowned.

"Which makes it a perfect hiding place."

Mariana made her decision.

"We leave at dawn."

Thousands of miles away...

The yacht finally reached a remote private island.

The twelve figures stepped onto an ancient stone dock.

At the center of the island stood a massive circular mansion surrounded by towering cliffs.

Margaret entered the grand hall.

A giant map of the world covered the marble floor.

The remaining eleven members removed their masks one by one.

Powerful faces.

Presidents of corporations.

Banking magnates.

Political dynasties.

Royal advisers.

People the world would never suspect.

An elderly woman seated at the head of the chamber spoke.

"Mariana Escalante has survived longer than expected."

Margaret nodded.

"She is becoming dangerous."

The elderly woman smiled.

"No."

"She is becoming useful."

She looked toward a massive portrait hanging above the fireplace.

A portrait of twelve founders painted nearly a century earlier.

One empty chair had been left unfinished.

The old woman whispered,

"When Mariana finds the Ledger..."

"...she will unknowingly complete what her grandfather began."

Margaret looked genuinely surprised.

"You still intend to tell her?"

The old woman smiled.

"When the time comes."

The following morning...

A military helicopter carrying Mariana, Victor, Andrew, Emily, Marcus, Alejandro, and Rebecca lifted into the gray sky.

Their destination—

Blackwater Lighthouse.

None of them noticed...

A second helicopter was following at a great distance.

No military markings.

No registration number.

Inside...

A lone sniper adjusted the scope of a precision rifle.

He smiled beneath his mask.

His radio crackled.

A calm female voice spoke.

"Do not recover the Ledger."

A pause.

Then one final order.

May you like

"Kill Mariana before she reaches it."
