Chapter 1 – The Will That Changed Everything

The first thing I heard was the metallic click of a chain locking behind me.
Then came my mother-in-law's laughter.
Cold.
Patient.
Victorious.
I struggled against the thick nylon ropes cutting into my wrists. My swollen stomach tightened painfully as another contraction rolled through my body.
Eight months pregnant.
Alone.
Helpless.
The abandoned underground garage smelled of gasoline, old concrete, and rust. Fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting long shadows across the polished floor.
Margaret Blackwood stood several feet away in a perfectly tailored ivory suit that probably cost more than most families earned in a year.
She looked elegant.
As if she were attending a charity gala instead of preparing to murder her pregnant daughter-in-law.
"I warned you not to get pregnant so quickly," she said calmly.
I stared at her.
"You begged Ethan for grandchildren for years."
"I begged for grandchildren," she corrected. "Not heirs."
She reached into her designer handbag and removed a folded piece of yellowed paper.
"My husband's last mistake."
Even from several feet away, I recognized the document.
The will.
The document everyone believed had disappeared three years earlier after my father-in-law, Richard Blackwood, died from a sudden heart attack.
Margaret smiled.
"You've probably never seen this version."
She unfolded it carefully.
"The original states that until Ethan has a child, I remain Chairwoman of Blackwood Global."
She paused.
"But the second clause..."
Her smile vanished.
"...changes everything."
She read aloud.
"Upon the birth of my first biological grandchild, all controlling shares of Blackwood Global shall immediately transfer into an irrevocable family trust under that child's name."
She looked directly at my stomach.
"That means this baby owns everything."
My blood ran cold.
The company.
The private islands.
The hotels.
The shipping empire.
The investment funds.
The real estate across four continents.
Everything.
"And me?" Margaret laughed bitterly.
"I become nothing more than a caretaker until the child turns twenty-five."
She folded the will.
"I spent forty years building this empire beside my husband."
"He built it."
"I protected it!"
Her voice echoed through the garage.
"I sacrificed my youth."
"I entertained investors."
"I buried scandals."
"I destroyed competitors."
"And now some unborn infant gets everything?"
She shook her head.
"Absolutely not."
Another contraction made me gasp.
The baby kicked violently.
Margaret noticed.
"Pity."
She nodded toward the ceiling.
I followed her gaze.
Suspended directly above me...
A silver Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Raised on an industrial hydraulic lift.
The lift slowly creaked.
I felt ice spread through my veins.
"No..."
Margaret pressed a small remote.
The hydraulic motor hummed.
The car lowered an inch.
"You see," she said almost conversationally, "old hydraulic systems sometimes fail."
Another inch.
"The investigators will call it a tragic accident."
Another.
"You wandered into a restricted maintenance garage."
The heavy luxury sedan continued descending.
More than three tons of steel.
Directly above my unborn child.
Tears blurred my vision.
"You'll kill your own grandson."
Margaret's expression remained perfectly still.
"I'll mourn beautifully."
She even practiced the expression.
A tear formed in one eye.
Then disappeared.
"I'll establish a foundation in your memory."
"I'll donate millions."
"I'll become America's grieving grandmother."
She smiled again.
"And no one will ever question me."
The hydraulic lift continued lowering.
I pulled desperately against the ropes.
My wrists bled.
Nothing moved.
Margaret checked her watch.
"Ethan's board meeting ends in exactly twenty-three minutes."
She looked satisfied.
"By the time he arrives home..."
"...you'll already be dead."
She turned toward the exit.
"Oh."
She stopped.
"One more thing."
She tossed a leather folder onto the floor beside me.
Inside were dozens of financial documents.
Offshore accounts.
Secret transfers.
Forged signatures.
"After your bodies are found..."
She smiled.
"...everyone will believe you stole hundreds of millions before trying to run away."
She walked toward the elevator without looking back.
The doors closed.
Silence.
Only the steady hum of the hydraulic lift.
The Rolls-Royce continued descending.
Five feet.
Four.
Three.
I squeezed my eyes shut.
Not for myself.
For my baby.
Then...
Buzz.
Buzz.
Buzz.
A phone vibrated inside the leather folder.
Margaret had forgotten it.
With trembling fingers, I stretched as far as the ropes allowed.
Just barely...
My fingertips reached the phone.
Unknown Caller.
The screen displayed a preview message before the call disconnected.
ETHAN FOUND THE ORIGINAL WILL.
HE KNOWS EVERYTHING.
My heart stopped.
Another message arrived immediately.
HE'S COMING. DON'T LET HER SEE THIS.
Before I could read the sender's name...
The garage elevator dinged open again.
Slow footsteps echoed across the concrete.
But they didn't belong to Margaret.
Someone else had entered the garage.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there.
And from the sound of those footsteps...
May you like
Whoever it was...
Had already seen the descending car.
