Chapter 10 – The Truth Richard Took to His Grave

No one moved.

The black envelope rested alone on the marble pedestal, untouched for decades.

Margaret stared at it as though it were a loaded weapon.

Richard Blackwood had always been a meticulous strategist. If he had written "Open only after Margaret hears the truth," then whatever lay inside had been intended as his final move.

Ethan looked at Adrian.

"You should open it."

Adrian slowly shook his head.

"He left this for both of us."

Together, the brothers stepped toward the pedestal.

Margaret suddenly shouted.

"Don't!"

Everyone turned.

For the first time since the nightmare had begun, there was unmistakable fear in her eyes.

"You have no idea what you're about to uncover."

Victor Hayes narrowed his gaze.

"That's exactly why we're opening it."

Ethan carefully broke the wax seal.

Inside were three items.

The first was another handwritten letter.

The second was an old VHS tape that had been professionally preserved inside a protective case.

The third...

Was a DNA laboratory report.

Adrian picked up the letter while Ethan unfolded the report.

His face froze.

"What is it?" Daniel asked.

Ethan couldn't answer.

He simply handed the report to Victor.

Victor read the first page.

Then the second.

Finally, he looked at Margaret.

"My God..."

Emily's name was nowhere on the report.

Neither was Ava's.

Instead, it listed:

Richard Blackwood

Margaret Blackwood

Adrian Blackwood

Ethan Blackwood

Under each name appeared a single conclusion.

Paternity Confirmed: Richard Blackwood

Victor frowned.

"I don't understand."

"They're both Richard's sons."

"So what?"

Adrian unfolded the handwritten letter.

Richard's voice seemed to come alive through the ink.

If you have reached this page, then Margaret has finally lost.

But before you judge her...

You deserve to know the entire truth.

Everyone listened as Adrian read aloud.

Ethan...

Adrian...

You are brothers.

Not half-brothers.

Brothers in every way that matters.

I fathered you both.

But I also failed both of you.

The room was silent except for Adrian's voice.

Margaret never accepted Adrian because she believed Eleanor had stolen me from her.

That was never true.

Eleanor and I met years before I married Margaret.

When Eleanor became pregnant, Margaret threatened to destroy her reputation, her career, and eventually her life.

I was weak.

Instead of protecting the woman I loved...

I married Margaret to preserve the company.

Margaret slowly lowered her head.

Tears formed in her eyes, but no one spoke.

Richard's letter continued.

I thought I could protect everyone.

Instead...

I destroyed every person I loved.

Daniel quietly asked,

"What about the videotape?"

Victor located an old media player preserved inside one of the archive cabinets.

After several tense minutes, the tape began playing.

Static filled the screen.

Then Richard appeared.

Not in a boardroom.

Not in an office.

But in a hospital room.

The date stamp read:

October 14 — Twenty-Two Years Earlier

Richard looked exhausted.

He was speaking directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then Margaret ignored my final warning."

He reached beside him and gently lifted a sleeping little boy.

It was Adrian.

Only three years old.

Richard kissed the child's forehead.

"This boy has done nothing wrong."

"He deserves to live."

His voice cracked.

"If anything happens to Eleanor..."

"...it wasn't an accident."

Everyone turned toward Margaret.

She remained perfectly still.

Richard continued.

"I have already delivered copies of every piece of evidence to three separate law firms."

"If Adrian dies..."

"Everything becomes public."

Victor whispered,

"So that's why she stopped hunting him."

Richard nodded on the screen.

"I know Margaret."

"She won't stop because she's evil."

"She'll stop because she's calculating."

"If she can't win..."

"She'll wait."

He looked directly into the camera.

"And one day..."

"...she'll come for the next generation."

Ethan slowly closed his eyes.

"My daughter..."

Richard's recorded voice softened.

"If you're holding your child while watching this..."

"...then I failed to protect your family."

"I'm sorry."

The tape ended.

Silence filled the chamber.

Margaret suddenly laughed.

Not loudly.

Quietly.

Almost sadly.

"You always blamed me."

She looked toward the frozen television.

"But Richard..."

"...you never admitted your own sins."

She slowly reached into her jacket.

Victor immediately raised his pistol.

"Don't move!"

Instead of a weapon...

Margaret removed a small antique key.

Solid gold.

Richard's initials were engraved into it.

She placed it gently on the marble pedestal.

"You still haven't found the final secret."

Adrian frowned.

"What key is that?"

Margaret smiled.

"The key to Vault Seven."

Daniel looked around the bunker.

"There are only six vaults."

"Exactly."

Margaret whispered.

"That's what Richard wanted everyone to believe."

Every face in the room changed.

"A seventh vault?"

Victor asked.

Margaret nodded.

"Everything you've seen tonight..."

"The wills."

"The evidence."

"The trust."

"The money."

She looked directly at Ethan.

"They're only distractions."

She tapped the golden key with one finger.

"The real Blackwood legacy..."

"...has never been inside this room."

Before anyone could stop her...

Margaret pressed a hidden switch beneath the marble pedestal.

A loud alarm echoed throughout the underground archive.

Red warning lights began flashing.

A computerized voice announced:

WARNING.

VAULT SEVEN SECURITY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

The concrete floor beneath everyone suddenly trembled.

Deep within the bunker...

A massive mechanism, untouched for more than two decades...

Began to move.

And somewhere beneath their feet...

Another door was opening.
