Chapter 6 – The Man in Switzerland

The helicopter landed just before dawn.

Not in New York.

Not in Washington.

Not even in Canada.

It landed on a private estate overlooking Lake Geneva, Switzerland, hidden behind iron gates and surrounded by acres of vineyards.

Margaret stepped onto the stone courtyard without a single piece of luggage.

She carried only one thing.

Richard Blackwood's silver flash drive.

Waiting for her at the entrance stood an elderly but impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit.

His silver hair was neatly combed, his posture military straight, and his piercing blue eyes revealed nothing.

"Mrs. Blackwood," he greeted.

"Mr. Hawthorne is expecting you."

Margaret followed him through the mansion.

Every hallway displayed priceless paintings.

Every room was silent.

No servants.

No security guards.

Only cameras.

Hundreds of them.

Finally, the butler opened two massive oak doors.

A man stood before a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the lake.

He never turned around.

"I warned Richard twenty-two years ago," he said calmly.

"Bloodlines create wars."

Margaret lowered her head.

"Victor Hawthorne..."

The billionaire slowly turned.

He was in his seventies.

Sharp.

Elegant.

His reputation was legendary.

The media believed he had retired from global finance years ago.

In reality...

He had spent two decades quietly controlling governments, banks, and multinational corporations through invisible partnerships.

Even Richard Blackwood had once described him as:

"The only man I never wanted as an enemy."

Victor Hawthorne looked at Margaret without emotion.

"So..."

"The child was born."

Margaret nodded.

"A girl."

"And the trust activated."

"Yes."

He sighed softly.

"Richard always planned twenty steps ahead."

Margaret placed the silver flash drive on his desk.

"He left this."

"I couldn't open it."

Victor studied the drive for several long seconds.

Then...

He smiled faintly.

"So he finally did it."

"You know what's on it?"

"I know what should be on it."

He pressed a hidden button beneath his desk.

A steel compartment silently opened.

Inside rested another flash drive.

Identical.

Same silver casing.

Same handwriting.

FINAL EVIDENCE.

Margaret frowned.

"There are two?"

Victor nodded.

"Richard never trusted anyone."

"Not even me."

Meanwhile...

Chicago Memorial Hospital.

Emily finally woke.

Sunlight streamed softly through the curtains.

The first thing she heard...

Was a tiny cry.

She turned her head.

Inside the neonatal incubator lay the smallest baby she had ever seen.

Tiny fingers.

Tiny nose.

Tiny heartbeat.

Yet somehow...

That tiny little girl had become the legal owner of a fortune worth over ninety billion dollars.

Ethan gently lifted the incubator's cover.

"Meet your daughter."

Emily burst into tears.

"She's beautiful."

"What did we name her?"

Ethan smiled.

"Ava Elizabeth Blackwood."

Emily looked surprised.

"Elizabeth?"

"My father's mother's name."

"He always said she was the bravest woman he'd ever known."

Emily reached through the incubator opening.

Ava's tiny hand wrapped around her finger.

The nurse smiled.

"She already knows her mother."

For one peaceful moment...

Everything else disappeared.

No company.

No inheritance.

No murder investigation.

Only a mother.

A father.

And their daughter.

Then the television mounted on the wall suddenly switched itself on.

BREAKING NEWS

"Federal authorities have frozen multiple Blackwood Global accounts following allegations of financial misconduct involving former Chairwoman Margaret Blackwood."

Another headline appeared.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS CALL EMERGENCY SESSION.

Then another.

INVESTORS DEMAND NEW LEADERSHIP.

Daniel entered the room carrying several newspapers.

"You need to see this."

Every front page carried the same photograph.

Margaret Blackwood.

Below it...

WANTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER, FRAUD, AND CONSPIRACY.

Emily exhaled in relief.

"It's over."

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead...

He quietly placed another envelope on Ethan's bedside table.

"No..."

Ethan whispered.

"What is it?"

"There was no return address."

Only one sentence had been typed across the front.

Open Alone.

Victor Hayes examined it carefully.

"No fingerprints."

"No DNA."

"No postage."

"It was delivered by hand."

Ethan slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

His breathing stopped.

Emily looked over his shoulder.

"Oh my God..."

The photograph showed Richard Blackwood.

Standing beside Victor Hawthorne.

Between them...

A little boy.

About eight years old.

Richard had his hand on the child's shoulder.

On the back of the photograph were only seven handwritten words.

Richard had another heir. He is alive.

Silence filled the hospital room.

Emily stared at Ethan.

"Another heir?"

"But..."

"Your father had only one child."

Ethan slowly shook his head.

"So I thought."

Victor Hayes immediately picked up his phone.

"I'm calling the FBI."

Before he could dial...

The hospital lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the entire floor.

Emergency generators failed to activate.

The hallway alarms began blaring.

Red emergency lights flashed.

A nurse screamed somewhere outside.

Victor pulled his handgun.

"Everyone stay back."

Footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Not running.

Walking.

Someone stopped outside Ava's neonatal room.

The doorknob slowly turned.

And a calm male voice spoke from the darkness.

May you like

"I've waited twenty-two years..."

"...to meet my little niece."
