Chapter 8 – The Underground Archive

The room fell into complete silence.
Ethan stared at Adrian.
"The underground archive..."
"I've never heard of it."
Adrian wasn't surprised.
"Because Father made sure you never would."
He walked to the hospital window, watching the rain beat against the glass.
"Richard Blackwood believed that every empire eventually faced betrayal."
"He trusted contracts."
"He trusted evidence."
"But he never trusted people."
Victor Hayes folded his arms.
"So where is it?"
Adrian hesitated.
"If I tell you..."
"...there will be no turning back."
Ethan answered without hesitation.
"My mother tried to murder my wife."
"She tried to kill my daughter."
"There is no turning back."
Adrian slowly nodded.
"The archive is beneath Blackwood Manor."
Daniel frowned.
"We searched the entire mansion."
"You searched the mansion."
Adrian looked directly at him.
"The archive isn't part of the mansion."
Forty years earlier...
Richard Blackwood had secretly commissioned an abandoned Cold War military bunker beneath the estate to be transformed into a secure vault.
Only three people had ever known it existed.
Richard.
His personal attorney.
And Adrian.
Every document that truly mattered was stored there.
Original share certificates.
Birth records.
The authentic wills.
Video confessions.
Financial ledgers.
Hidden recordings.
Evidence capable of destroying presidents, billionaires, and organized crime figures.
Richard had once joked,
"If Blackwood Global ever falls..."
"...history will survive underground."
Daniel whispered,
"My God..."
At that exact moment...
Two thousand miles away...
Margaret Blackwood stood inside the wine cellar beneath Blackwood Manor.
Around her, FBI agents searched the upper floors, completely unaware she was still inside the estate.
She smiled.
"They never knew."
The old wine rack looked ordinary.
Thousands of expensive bottles rested quietly on oak shelves.
Margaret walked to one specific bottle.
A dusty French Bordeaux dated 1981.
She pulled it forward.
Nothing happened.
She twisted it.
A deep mechanical rumble echoed beneath the stone floor.
The wine shelves slowly separated.
A steel elevator emerged from the darkness.
Margaret stepped inside.
The hidden doors closed silently behind her.
The elevator descended.
Fifty feet.
One hundred feet.
One hundred fifty feet.
Finally...
The doors opened.
Before her stretched a massive underground complex.
Concrete tunnels.
Blast doors.
Climate-controlled vaults.
Rows upon rows of steel cabinets.
Richard's secret archive.
Margaret smiled.
"So..."
"This is where you hid everything."
Back in Chicago...
Victor's secure phone rang.
He answered immediately.
The color drained from his face.
"What?"
He looked toward Adrian.
"Motion sensors."
"Someone entered the archive three minutes ago."
Adrian whispered,
"We're too late."
"No."
Victor shook his head.
"Not yet."
He opened a digital blueprint.
"There are two entrances."
Adrian looked surprised.
"You know about the emergency tunnel?"
Victor nodded.
"Richard trusted me with one secret."
"But only after he believed you were dead."
Adrian let out a long breath.
"Then we still have a chance."
Emily quietly looked at her sleeping daughter.
"I can't leave."
Ethan knelt beside her.
"You won't."
"I'll finish this."
Emily grabbed his hand.
"Promise me something."
"Anything."
"If Margaret makes you choose..."
"...between the company..."
"...and coming home alive..."
She looked into his eyes.
"Choose us."
Ethan kissed her forehead.
"I already have."
He looked at Ava.
His tiny daughter slept peacefully, completely unaware that the world was fighting over her future.
"I don't care about ninety billion dollars."
"I care about watching her grow up."
Emily smiled through tears.
"Then come back."
One hour later...
A military helicopter lifted off from the hospital rooftop.
On board were Ethan.
Adrian.
Victor.
Daniel.
And four members of Blackwood Global Executive Protection.
As the helicopter disappeared into the storm clouds...
Another aircraft silently followed several miles behind.
Its navigation lights were turned off.
Inside sat a woman dressed entirely in black.
She watched Ethan's helicopter through night-vision binoculars.
Then she picked up a satellite phone.
"They're heading for the archive."
A man's voice answered.
"Good."
"Don't stop them."
The woman frowned.
"You want them to reach it?"
"Exactly."
A soft laugh came through the phone.
"They'll open the last door for us."
The call ended.
Deep beneath Blackwood Manor...
Margaret reached the center of the archive.
In the middle of the chamber stood a massive circular vault unlike anything she had ever seen.
There was no keypad.
No fingerprint scanner.
No electronic lock.
Only one bronze plaque engraved with Richard Blackwood's words:
"The greatest fortunes are not protected by steel. They are protected by truth."
Margaret laughed.
"Truth never stopped me before."
She inserted the silver flash drive.
Nothing happened.
She frowned.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Then...
A calm electronic voice echoed through the chamber.
"Authentication failed."
Margaret's smile vanished.
"What?"
The system spoke again.
"Primary authorization required."
Then, for the first time in twenty-two years...
A hidden screen illuminated.
One sentence appeared across it.
WELCOME HOME, ADRIAN BLACKWOOD.
Margaret froze.
"No..."
"Richard..."
"What have you done?"
She suddenly understood the horrifying truth.
The archive had never been designed to keep people out.
It had been designed to keep her out.

And the only person capable of unlocking the final chamber...
Was the son she believed had died twenty-two years ago.
