Chapter 2 – The Man She Never Expected

The footsteps broke into a sprint.
"Stop!"
The voice thundered across the underground garage.
A security flashlight swept through the darkness, landing on the descending Rolls-Royce hanging only a few feet above my body.
The man froze for half a second.
Then his instincts took over.
He lunged toward the hydraulic control panel mounted on the wall.
The lift groaned.
The car continued to descend.
"No..."
He slammed the emergency stop button.
Nothing happened.
The warning light flashed bright red.
SYSTEM OVERRIDE ACTIVATED.
Someone had disabled every safety mechanism.
My pulse pounded in my ears.
"Please..." I whispered.
"My baby..."
The stranger looked at me.
He couldn't have been older than thirty-five, dressed in grease-stained coveralls with a Blackwood Global Facilities badge clipped to his chest.
Daniel Brooks. Senior Maintenance Supervisor.
His face drained of color as he noticed my swollen belly.
"Oh my God."
He grabbed a steel toolbox and smashed it against the emergency release cabinet.
Glass exploded everywhere.
Inside was the manual hydraulic brake.
Daniel pulled the lever with everything he had.
Nothing.
He pulled again.
Still nothing.
"They welded it shut," he muttered.
His eyes widened in disbelief.
"They planned this."
The Rolls-Royce lowered another six inches.
Now it hung barely two feet above my face.
The polished chrome grille reflected my terrified expression.
Every movement of the hydraulic cables echoed through the garage.
Daniel looked around frantically.
Then his eyes landed on an industrial forklift parked nearby.
Without another word, he jumped into the driver's seat.
The engine roared to life.
He drove straight toward the descending car.
The steel forks rose as high as they could.
The forklift crashed beneath the Rolls-Royce with a deafening clang.
The impact shook the entire garage.
For one terrifying second, I thought the collision would send the car crashing onto me.
Instead...
The forklift's steel mast caught the vehicle's undercarriage.
The Rolls-Royce stopped.
Its enormous weight now rested on the trembling forklift.
Metal screamed under the pressure.
Daniel stared at the dashboard.
The hydraulic pressure gauge climbed into the red zone.
"This won't hold..."
Cracks appeared in the forklift's support arms.
He jumped down and rushed to me.
"I'm getting you out."
He pulled a folding knife from his pocket and began sawing through the ropes binding my wrists.
The nylon was thick.
Too thick.
Each cut seemed to take forever.
Above us...
The forklift groaned.
A loud metallic snap echoed through the garage.
Daniel looked up.
One support arm had already begun to bend.
"We're out of time."
I forced myself to stay calm.
"My ankles."
He cut faster.
Sweat poured down his face.
The baby kicked violently.
Another contraction ripped through my body.
Pain shot across my abdomen.
Daniel looked horrified.
"You're in labor."
"I know."
The final rope around my wrists snapped.
My hands were free.
Before he could reach my ankles—
His phone rang.
He ignored it.
It rang again.
Then again.
Finally, he glanced at the screen.
His expression changed.
"Ethan Blackwood."
He answered immediately.
"Mr. Blackwood—"
A furious voice exploded through the speaker so loudly I could hear every word.
"Daniel! My mother lied about a maintenance inspection. Check Garage C immediately! My wife is there!"
Daniel looked at me.
"I found her."
Silence.
Then Ethan's voice became almost unrecognizable.
"...Alive?"
"For now."
Daniel looked up at the forklift.
"It won't stay that way much longer."
The line went quiet.
Then Ethan spoke with terrifying calm.
"I'm five minutes away."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"You don't have five minutes."
He looked at the bending steel supports.
"You may not even have one."
Another deafening crack echoed overhead.
One hydraulic cylinder burst.
Oil sprayed across the concrete floor.
The forklift dipped several inches.
The Rolls-Royce lurched downward.
I screamed.
Daniel threw himself over my body instinctively.
The massive sedan stopped less than a foot above us.
Its tires hung directly over my stomach.
Every breath I took felt like my last.
Then...
The elevator doors opened again.
Slowly.
Someone stepped out wearing elegant black heels.
Margaret.
She stared at the scene for several long seconds.
Then she smiled.
Not nervous.
Not surprised.
Simply... disappointed.
"I see," she said softly.
"The maintenance supervisor decided to become a hero."
Daniel stood between us.
"Call the police."
Margaret laughed.
"I own the police commissioner."
She took another step forward.
"And by the time anyone believes your story..."
Her eyes shifted toward the forklift.
"...that little machine will have collapsed."
She reached into her handbag.
This time...
She didn't pull out documents.
She pulled out a small pistol fitted with a suppressor.
Daniel's face went white.
Margaret calmly aimed the weapon at him.
"You've seen far too much."
At that exact moment—
The garage entrance exploded open.
A black SUV skidded across the concrete, tires screaming.
The driver's door flew open before the vehicle had fully stopped.
Ethan Blackwood stepped out.
His tailored suit was covered in dust from running through the construction site next door.
In one hand...
He held his father's original will.
In the other...
A thick folder filled with documents his mother had hidden for years.
His eyes landed on the gun.
Then on me beneath the hanging Rolls-Royce.
Then on his own mother.
For the first time in his life...
May you like
Ethan looked at Margaret Blackwood not as his mother—
But as the woman who had just tried to murder his wife and unborn child.
