Chapter 14 – The Last Choice Before Dawn

The first helicopter swept low over the Atlantic.
Its rotors shattered the morning silence.
Then came the second.
The third.
Within seconds, eight matte-black helicopters surrounded the lighthouse from every direction, hovering just beyond the cliffs.
"They're boxing us in," Daniel said.
Victor watched through a pair of naval binoculars.
"Former military pilots."
"Disciplined."
"They're waiting."
"They don't want to destroy the lighthouse."
Adrian looked toward the oak desk.
"They know the second half of Phoenix is still inside."
A loudspeaker crackled to life.
A calm, unfamiliar voice echoed across the sea.
"Ethan Blackwood."
"Adrian Blackwood."
"There is no need for unnecessary bloodshed."
The voice carried no anger.
Only certainty.
"We request the Phoenix files."
"In return..."
"...your family walks away."
Margaret laughed bitterly.
"They're still pretending."
Victor didn't even look up.
"They're stalling."
"They're waiting for their ground team."
Almost on cue...
Daniel spotted movement in the surrounding forest.
Dark figures emerged between the pine trees.
One.
Five.
Ten.
More than thirty heavily armed operatives silently surrounded the lighthouse.
"There they are."
Victor counted quickly.
"Thirty-two outside."
"Possibly more."
"We're completely encircled."
Ethan opened the Phoenix briefcase once more.
Beneath the research files lay a small wooden box he hadn't noticed before.
Inside...
Richard had left one final letter.
Only four lines.
Ethan...
Trust your heart.
Adrian...
Trust your brother.
Adrian smiled.
"He knew we'd disagree."
Ethan looked up.
"But we don't."
He closed the box.
"We're protecting Ava."
"Everything else comes second."
Daniel searched the lighthouse from top to bottom.
In the old keeper's quarters, hidden behind a faded painting of the coastline, he found a narrow steel safe.
There was no lock.
Only a brass plate bearing Richard's initials.
Adrian placed the golden key Margaret had surrendered into the slot.
The safe clicked open.
Inside rested...
A crystal data drive.
Smaller than a thumb.
Alongside it sat a handwritten notebook.
Victor opened the notebook carefully.
Richard had documented every scientific breakthrough, every engineering decision, and every safety test from Operation Phoenix.
The crystal drive contained the missing half of the research.
Daniel whispered,
"So this is it."
"The second key."
Suddenly...
The satellite phone rang again.
This time...
It wasn't a recording.
Victor answered.
A man's voice spoke immediately.
"Good morning, Mr. Hayes."
Victor's expression hardened.
"Who is this?"
"You've called us the Sovereign Circle."
"We simply call ourselves caretakers."
"Caretakers of what?"
"The balance of power."
The man continued calmly.
"Operation Phoenix cannot belong to one family."
"It would reshape governments."
"Markets."
"Entire nations."
Ethan stepped closer.
"So you tried to murder my family for it?"
A brief silence followed.
Then the man answered.
"No."
"We eliminated obstacles."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"They always use that word."
The caller continued.
"You have ten minutes."
"Leave the research on the lighthouse steps."
"No one dies."
Victor smiled coldly.
"You expect us to believe that?"
"No."
"I expect you to understand mathematics."
The line disconnected.
Seconds later...
A sniper's bullet shattered the lighthouse lantern above their heads.
Glass exploded across the floor.
The message was unmistakable.
Time was running out.
Adrian looked toward Ethan.
"There isn't enough time to escape."
Victor agreed.
"They'll intercept any helicopter."
"They control the roads."
"They control the harbor."
Daniel looked at the crystal drive.
Then at the Phoenix briefcase.
An idea slowly formed.
"What if..."
Everyone turned toward him.
"What if they never know which copy survives?"
Adrian frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel placed the crystal drive beside the briefcase.
"They're expecting us to protect both."
"So we make them believe both still exist."
Victor immediately understood.
"A decoy."
Daniel nodded.
"We split up."
"One team carries the briefcase."
"The other carries the crystal drive."
"The Sovereign Circle won't know which is real."
Ethan looked around the room.
"It's risky."
"It also doubles our chances."
Margaret slowly stepped forward.
"I'll carry one."
Everyone stared at her.
Victor shook his head.
"No."
"You've earned no one's trust."
Margaret looked directly at Ethan.
"I know."
"But I've spent twenty-two years choosing power."
She glanced toward a framed photograph of Richard hanging on the lighthouse wall.
"I'd like to make one decision..."
"...that he wouldn't be ashamed of."
Silence filled the room.
Ethan studied her face.
For the first time...
He believed she meant every word.
He handed her the briefcase.
Victor looked shocked.
"Ethan!"
"If she betrays us..."
Ethan interrupted quietly.
"Then she betrays Richard one final time."
Margaret accepted the briefcase with trembling hands.
Tears rolled silently down her face.
"I won't."
Outside...
The first assault team began climbing the lighthouse stairs.
Heavy boots echoed through the stone tower.
Victor chambered a round.
Adrian secured the crystal drive inside his jacket.
Daniel checked the emergency escape map.
Ethan looked toward the Atlantic one last time.
The sun was rising over the horizon.
Its first golden light struck the lighthouse lens.
The beam reflected across the ocean...
And landed on something far offshore.
A vessel.
Not one of the Sovereign Circle's helicopters.
A ship.
White.
Silent.
Approaching fast.
Daniel focused the binoculars.
His heartbeat stopped.
Painted across the bow in black letters were two words Richard had written countless times in his journals:
PHOENIX ONE.
Before anyone could speak...
The ship sounded its horn.
May you like
And every helicopter in the sky abruptly turned toward it.
Someone else had entered the battle.
