Chapter 9 – Richard Blackwood's Final Trial

The helicopter landed on the east lawn of Blackwood Manor just before midnight.
Rain hammered the estate as Ethan, Adrian, Victor, Daniel, and the security team rushed toward the old wine cellar.
FBI agents swarmed the mansion above, searching every room.
None of them knew the real battle was taking place nearly two hundred feet underground.
Victor stopped the team before the hidden elevator.
"From this point forward, radios won't work."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
"The bunker walls are reinforced with military-grade shielding."
Adrian nodded.
"My father designed it that way."
"No outside signals."
"No remote hacking."
"No escape."
Ethan looked at his brother.
"You've been here before?"
"Only once."
"I was ten."
"My father brought me here and made me promise never to tell anyone."
He paused.
"He said if I ever returned..."
"...it would mean the Blackwood family had reached the edge of destruction."
Deep below them...
Margaret stood motionless before the sealed bronze vault.
She had tried every code she could imagine.
Every biometric scanner.
Every hidden panel.
Nothing worked.
Then...
Footsteps echoed through the corridor.
She turned slowly.
Ethan.
Adrian.
Victor.
Daniel.
The brothers had arrived.
Margaret smiled.
"I was wondering how long it would take."
Ethan stepped forward.
"It's over, Mother."
"You've lost."
She laughed.
"No."
"I've simply reached the final chapter."
Adrian ignored her and approached the vault.
The screen illuminated immediately.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED
WELCOME, ADRIAN BLACKWOOD
Margaret's smile disappeared.
The system spoke again.
SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED
Everyone looked at Ethan.
The screen changed.
WELCOME, ETHAN BLACKWOOD
The two brothers exchanged surprised glances.
Adrian whispered,
"Father..."
"He wanted both of us here."
Victor stepped back.
"This wasn't a lock."
"It was a reunion."
The vault doors remained closed.
A new message appeared.
PLEASE PROCEED TO MEMORY ROOM ONE
A steel door slid open nearby.
Inside waited an elegant room unlike the cold bunker outside.
A fireplace.
Leather chairs.
Family photographs.
Richard Blackwood's favorite chessboard.
It looked exactly like his private study.
In the center stood a large television.
Without anyone touching it...
The screen turned on.
Richard Blackwood appeared.
Alive.
Smiling.
It was a pre-recorded video.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I am no longer with you."
Ethan's throat tightened.
His father's voice filled the room.
"First..."
"Ethan."
"You finally found your brother."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Richard smiled gently.
"I've waited many years for this moment."
"I only wish I could have been there."
He became serious.
"Before this vault opens..."
"...I need to know something."
The screen split into two images.
One showed the vault behind them.
The other showed Ava sleeping peacefully in the hospital nursery.
Everyone froze.
"How..."
Daniel whispered.
Richard continued.
"This archive does not belong to Blackwood Global."
"It does not belong to the Board."
"It does not belong to my family."
He looked directly into the camera.
"It belongs to whoever chooses people..."
"...over power."
Silence filled the room.
Richard slowly stood from his chair.
"If either of my sons opens this vault because he wants wealth..."
"...the system will permanently destroy every document inside."
Margaret's eyes widened.
"What?"
Victor immediately looked toward the reinforced doors.
Hidden explosives.
Thermite charges.
Fire suppression systems.
Richard had built a self-destruct mechanism.
The billionaire had anticipated everything.
The screen displayed one final instruction.
ONLY ONE QUESTION REMAINS.
A mechanical voice echoed through the room.
ETHAN BLACKWOOD.
IF OPENING THIS VAULT MEANS LOSING BLACKWOOD GLOBAL FOREVER...
BUT SAVING YOUR WIFE AND DAUGHTER...
WHICH DO YOU CHOOSE?
Everyone stared at Ethan.
Margaret smiled again.
She finally understood.
The company...
The evidence...
The inheritance...
Everything depended on his answer.
Ethan didn't hesitate.
"My wife."
He looked toward the screen.
"My daughter."
"The company means nothing without them."
The computer remained silent.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Then...
The voice spoke again.
ANSWER ACCEPTED.
Margaret's face turned pale.
The screen turned toward Adrian.
ADRIAN BLACKWOOD.
IF CLAIMING YOUR BIRTHRIGHT MEANS YOUR NIECE BECOMES POOR...
DO YOU ACCEPT THE EMPIRE?
Adrian smiled sadly.
"I've lived without this family for twenty-two years."
"I don't need an empire."
"My niece deserves a future."
"I choose Ava."
Silence.
Then every light inside the bunker suddenly turned green.
Massive steel locks disengaged.
One after another.
The enormous bronze vault slowly opened.
Inside...
There was no gold.
No cash.
No jewels.
Only hundreds of carefully labeled boxes.
And in the center...
A single black envelope resting on a marble pedestal.
Across the front, in Richard Blackwood's handwriting, were seven chilling words:
Open only after Margaret hears the truth.
Margaret stared at the envelope.
For the first time...
She looked genuinely afraid.
Because she knew Richard Blackwood better than anyone.
If he had saved that envelope for the very end...
May you like
Then whatever was inside...
Would destroy far more than her reputation.
