Chapter 11 – Vault Seven

The entire underground archive shook violently.
Dust rained from the concrete ceiling as a deep mechanical rumble echoed through the bunker.
Everyone instinctively stepped back.
Victor Hayes raised his pistol.
"Stay behind me."
The marble floor in the center of the chamber slowly split apart.
Ancient hydraulic pistons groaned beneath decades of silence.
A circular platform began rising from the darkness.
Not another vault.
A room.
Built entirely of polished black steel.
When it stopped moving, a single chair sat in the center beneath a white spotlight.
On the chair rested a leather briefcase.
Nothing else.
No gold.
No cash.
No diamonds.
Just an old briefcase.
Daniel frowned.
"This... is Vault Seven?"
Margaret smiled faintly.
"You expected treasure."
Richard had hidden something far more valuable.
Adrian cautiously stepped forward.
The briefcase bore Richard Blackwood's initials.
There were no locks.
No codes.
Only a brass plate engraved with five words:
Truth belongs to the courageous.
Ethan slowly opened the case.
Inside were hundreds of neatly organized documents.
On top rested a sealed envelope.
To Whoever Protects Ava Blackwood
Ethan immediately tore it open.
Richard's final handwritten letter unfolded before him.
He began reading aloud.
If you are standing in Vault Seven...
Then the future of our family no longer depends on me.
It depends on you.
Everyone listened in complete silence.
This room does not contain the greatest wealth I ever created.
It contains every mistake I ever made.
Every crime I covered.
Every lie I told.
Every person I failed.
Ethan slowly looked through the files.
Corporate bribery investigations.
Government correspondence.
Internal audits.
Signed confessions.
Evidence against dozens of powerful executives.
Even Richard himself had documented every illegal decision he had ever approved.
Victor whispered,
"He recorded his own crimes."
Adrian nodded.
"He intended to confess."
Margaret suddenly laughed.
A tired laugh.
"You finally understand."
She looked toward Ethan.
"Your father wasn't the saint you imagined."
"He built Blackwood Global with dirty money."
"He destroyed competitors."
"He bribed officials."
"He bought judges."
She spread her arms.
"And now the whole world will know."
Ethan remained silent.
He continued reading.
Then his eyes stopped on one final folder.
Its title chilled everyone.
Operation Phoenix
Victor frowned.
"I've never heard of that."
Neither had Adrian.
Ethan opened the file.
Inside were photographs.
Satellite maps.
Construction blueprints.
Shipping manifests.
Daniel looked confused.
"This isn't about Blackwood Global."
"No."
Victor slowly whispered.
"It's about something much bigger."
Richard's notes explained everything.
Nearly twenty-five years earlier...
Blackwood Global had secretly financed the construction of a revolutionary clean-energy technology capable of replacing fossil fuels.
The invention had been developed by independent scientists.
Richard believed it could change the world.
But shortly before its public release...
Several multinational corporations offered him unimaginable amounts of money.
Not to buy the technology.
To bury it.
Richard refused.
Within weeks...
Three lead scientists disappeared.
The research facility burned to the ground.
The project officially ended.
Or so everyone believed.
Daniel slowly turned another page.
Hidden beneath Vault Seven was proof that Richard had secretly rebuilt the project.
Under a different name.
Operation Phoenix.
For twenty years...
He had continued funding the research through anonymous foundations.
Victor looked stunned.
"My God..."
"This technology could change the global economy."
Adrian looked at Ethan.
"This..."
"...is worth more than Blackwood Global."
Suddenly...
The bunker lights flickered.
Victor's radio crackled.
Then came a frantic voice.
"Mr. Hayes!"
"We've been breached!"
Gunfire echoed through the speaker.
Everyone froze.
"What happened?"
"Unknown tactical team!"
"They're inside the mansion!"
"They knew exactly where to go!"
The transmission cut off.
Victor cursed under his breath.
"They followed us."
Adrian immediately closed the briefcase.
"They're here for Phoenix."
Not for the money.
Not for the inheritance.
For the technology.
Heavy footsteps echoed from the corridor.
Not one person.
Many.
Armed.
Professional.
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
"We're trapped."
Victor counted quietly.
"At least fifteen."
Margaret slowly sat down against the wall.
Almost peacefully.
"They're not mine."
Everyone looked at her.
She slowly shook her head.
"I ran this empire."
"But even I never knew who financed the attacks on Richard's research."
Adrian's expression changed.
"You know who they are."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I know what they call themselves."
Silence filled the bunker.
Then she whispered two words that caused Victor's face to go completely pale.
The Sovereign Circle.
Victor immediately chambered a round.
Ethan frowned.
"Who are they?"
Victor answered quietly.
"They don't buy companies."
"They buy governments."
"They don't steal inventions."
"They erase history."
He looked at the sealed corridor leading into Vault Seven.
"If they know Phoenix survived..."
"They won't leave anyone alive."
Just then...
A powerful explosion shook the bunker.
The reinforced blast door bent inward.
A second explosion followed.
Steel began tearing apart.
Someone was breaking into Vault Seven.
May you like
And this enemy...
Was far more dangerous than Margaret Blackwood had ever been.
