Chapter 12 – The Siege Beneath Blackwood Manor

The first blast bent the reinforced steel door.

The second tore a jagged crack through its center.

A third explosion shook the entire bunker, sending dust cascading from the ceiling.

Victor Hayes immediately took command.

"Lights off!"

The emergency lighting switched to dim red.

The room disappeared into shadows.

Daniel and the security team overturned heavy steel filing cabinets, creating an improvised barricade between Vault Seven and the entrance.

Adrian snapped the briefcase shut.

"If they get Phoenix..."

"They'll bury it forever."

Ethan nodded.

"Then they don't get it."

Outside the damaged blast door...

The explosions stopped.

Silence.

A calm male voice echoed through the corridor.

"Mr. Ethan Blackwood."

"We know you're inside."

His tone was polite.

Professional.

Almost friendly.

"You have something that belongs to us."

Victor whispered,

"Don't answer."

The voice continued.

"We are not interested in your family."

"We are not interested in your inheritance."

"We only require Operation Phoenix."

Daniel frowned.

"They know exactly what they're after."

Another voice joined in.

Female.

Cold.

"If you surrender the research..."

"...everyone walks out alive."

Margaret suddenly laughed.

"They're lying."

Everyone looked at her.

She slowly stood.

"I made deals with men like these."

"They never leave witnesses."

A loud metallic clang echoed through the corridor.

Someone was cutting through the blast door.

Industrial plasma torches.

Victor checked his watch.

"They'll breach in under four minutes."

He turned toward Ethan.

"We have two options."

"Fight."

"Or disappear."

"Disappear where?"

Victor looked toward the rising platform of Vault Seven.

Richard's final letter still lay open.

Near the bottom, almost overlooked, Adrian noticed a single handwritten sentence.

If danger reaches this room... follow the lighthouse.

Adrian blinked.

"The lighthouse?"

Daniel frowned.

"We're underground."

"There isn't a lighthouse."

Victor suddenly froze.

His eyes widened.

"There is."

Twenty-three years earlier...

Richard Blackwood had purchased an abandoned lighthouse on the rocky coast of Maine.

Everyone believed it was a sentimental retirement property.

It wasn't.

It had secretly served as the second entrance to the underground archive.

Victor looked around the chamber.

"If this bunker has an escape tunnel..."

"It leads there."

Margaret quietly whispered,

"He never told me."

Adrian smiled sadly.

"He never trusted you enough."

Suddenly...

A soft click echoed beneath the marble floor.

Ethan looked down.

One of the floor tiles had shifted slightly.

He knelt and pressed against it.

It slid aside.

Hidden beneath was a brass lever.

He pulled it.

Deep inside the walls...

Ancient gears came alive.

The bookshelf beside Vault Seven slowly rotated.

Behind it...

A narrow stone staircase descended into complete darkness.

Daniel stared.

"Richard built an escape route."

Victor smiled.

"He built several."

The attackers outside heard the mechanism.

The calm voice returned.

"So..."

"You found the tunnel."

Silence.

Then he added,

"It won't save you."

A final explosion ripped through the damaged blast door.

Steel screamed.

The entrance buckled inward.

Victor shouted,

"Move!"

Daniel grabbed the Phoenix briefcase.

Adrian picked up Richard's letters.

Ethan helped Margaret to her feet.

She looked surprised.

"You'd save me?"

Ethan answered without looking back.

"My father believed everyone deserved one last chance."

Margaret lowered her eyes.

For the first time...

She seemed ashamed.

One by one...

They disappeared into the narrow staircase.

Victor remained behind.

He placed two small explosive charges around the entrance to Vault Seven.

Daniel looked back.

"What are you doing?"

"Buying time."

Victor descended after them.

The moment he reached the bottom...

He pressed the detonator.

A deafening explosion collapsed the staircase entrance behind them.

Thousands of pounds of concrete crashed into the corridor.

The attackers were buried beneath tons of rubble.

Not killed.

Delayed.

The entire tunnel shook violently.

Dust filled the air.

The lights flickered.

Then darkness.

Only emergency lanterns illuminated the ancient passage.

The walls were rough stone instead of concrete.

Older.

Much older.

Daniel ran his hand across them.

"These weren't built with the bunker."

Victor nodded.

"No."

"They've been here for over a century."

Adrian's flashlight revealed old carvings on the wall.

A compass.

A lighthouse.

And beneath it...

Richard's handwriting.

The sea remembers what men forget.

The tunnel stretched forward into darkness.

Then...

Far ahead...

A faint blue light appeared.

Not electric.

Natural.

Like moonlight reflecting on water.

Ethan whispered,

"We're underground."

"How is that possible?"

No one answered.

Because they had all heard it.

The unmistakable sound echoing through the tunnel.

Waves.

Ocean waves crashing against rock.

But Blackwood Manor stood hundreds of miles from the coast.

And that meant Richard Blackwood had hidden one final secret...

One that none of them had imagined.
