Chapter 1 - SUNRISE

Julian woke at 6:17 the next morning believing the worst thing that had happened to him was a mild hangover.
He was wrong.
The first sign came when the private penthouse elevator refused to recognize his fingerprint.
He pressed his thumb against the scanner again.
Red light.
He tried his executive keycard.
Red light.
Behind him, Camila appeared wearing Elena’s cashmere robe and holding a cup of coffee.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
Julian swiped the card again.
The screen flashed a message he had never seen before.
AUTHORIZATION REVOKED.
His expression changed.
He pulled out his phone.
The executive dashboard for the resort network had logged him out.
He entered his password.
Incorrect.
He entered it again.
Incorrect.
Then he tried the corporate banking portal.
His access was suspended.
The investment dashboard was unavailable.
The board communication system rejected his credentials.
Even the internal security application no longer recognized his account.
Camila lowered her coffee.
“Julian?”
He called the general manager downstairs.
No answer.
He called the CFO.
Voicemail.
He called the chairman of the board.
Voicemail.
He called three senior executives in New York.
No one answered.
The silence frightened him more than anger would have.
Julian grabbed his jacket.
“We’re going downstairs.”
They took the service elevator.
When the doors opened into the executive corridor, two security officers were waiting.
Julian recognized both men.
He had personally approved their promotions.
“Morning, Mr. Mercer.”
Julian walked toward his office.
One guard stepped sideways.
“Sir, I’m afraid you can’t enter.”
Julian stopped.
“What did you just say?”
“Your executive access has been temporarily suspended.”
Julian laughed.
It was short and humorless.
“By whom?”
The guard hesitated.
“Corporate ownership.”
Julian stared at him.
“I am corporate ownership.”
Neither guard responded.
Julian pushed past them and pressed his card against the glass office door.
Red light.
Across the corridor, employees pretended not to look.
Julian turned slowly.
“Who gave this order?”
The younger guard swallowed.
“I was instructed not to discuss authorization structure with you.”
Julian stepped closer.
“Do you understand who I am?”
Before the guard could answer, every television in the executive corridor changed.
The promotional advertisements disappeared.
A simple company notice replaced them.
MANDATORY EXECUTIVE MEETING.
8:00 A.M.
ATTENDANCE BY AUTHORIZATION ONLY.
Below it appeared a name Julian had never seen on an internal company notice.
VALE HERITAGE TRUST.
Camila looked at him.
“What is that?”
Julian did not answer.
For the first time in nine years, he remembered something Elena’s father had once told him at their wedding.
It had sounded like a sentimental family warning at the time.
Now it sounded completely different.
“Never mistake Elena’s silence for surrender.”
Julian pulled out his phone and called his wife.
This time, Elena answered.
“What did you do?”
Her voice was calm.
“Good morning, Julian.”
“You locked me out of my own company.”
There was a pause.
Then Elena said the sentence that made the entire corridor seem suddenly colder.
“No.”
May you like
“I locked you out of mine.”
