Chapter 9 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE WINE CELLAR
The storage room had no official listing on the resort floor plans.
That alone made Elena furious.
She had approved every architectural change to the property.
Or believed she had.
Security records revealed Julian authorized the construction during a renovation eighteen months earlier.
The room was hidden behind the private wine cellar.
Only four people had access.
Julian.
Adrian.
Robert Kessler.
Camila.
Elena stood outside the steel door with Margaret, two independent investigators, and the resort’s security director.
Because the land and building were controlled by entities represented by the Vale trust, legal access had been secured.
The door opened at 11:36 p.m.
Inside were filing cabinets.
Two encrypted computers.
Boxes of contracts.
Copies of passports.
Personal records.
And photographs.
Elena stepped toward one wall.
Dozens of luxury properties were marked on maps.
Several had circles around them.
Beside each circle was a future ownership company.
None belonged to Meridian Crown.
Julian had been planning a shadow empire.
He intended to move management rights from family-controlled properties into entities he controlled personally.
The process would take years.
But he had already begun.
Margaret opened one folder.
“Elena.”
Inside were copies of the couple’s private financial records.
There were estimates of what Julian expected to receive in a divorce.
There were strategies for challenging the Vale trust.
There were notes about portraying Elena as unstable.
One page listed incidents that had never happened.
Public outbursts.
Alcohol abuse.
Erratic spending.
Threats to employees.
Elena felt her hands tighten.
He had been manufacturing a future version of her.
A woman he could destroy.
Thomas stood behind her.
“Enough.”
Elena looked at her father.
He wanted her to leave.
She shook her head.
“I need to see all of it.”
An investigator opened another cabinet.
Inside was a velvet jewelry case.
Elena recognized it.
Her grandmother’s collection.
Not just the emerald pendant.
Three other pieces Elena had believed misplaced during renovations were inside.
Camila had apparently been choosing from them.
Elena stared at the case.
That hurt differently than financial betrayal.
Julian had walked through memories of dead relatives and converted them into gifts for his mistress.
Margaret quietly closed the box.
“We’ll preserve it.”
Elena nodded.
Then one investigator called from the computer station.
“We decrypted a folder.”
“What’s inside?”
He looked at Elena.
“Video.”
The first recording showed Julian and Kessler discussing how to pressure the board.
The second showed Camila bringing documents into the room.
The third made Elena stop breathing.
On the screen, Julian stood beside a whiteboard.
Across the top he had written four words.
