Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM DOOR

The boardroom occupied the top floor of Meridian Crown’s corporate headquarters.
Julian had designed the room to intimidate visitors.
Twenty-four leather chairs surrounded a walnut table imported from Italy.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city.
At one end hung a photograph of Julian opening the company’s first major coastal resort.
He loved that photograph.
It made history look exactly the way he wanted people to remember it.
When Julian entered that morning, the photograph was gone.
In its place hung nothing.
The empty wall bothered him immediately.
Eleven board members were seated.
Elena sat at the opposite end.
Thomas Vale was beside her.
Julian stopped.
For the first time since the previous night, he saw his wife without rain on her face.
She looked rested.
Controlled.
Untouchable.
“You’re enjoying this.”
Elena met his eyes.
“No.”
“That makes one of us.”
He took his usual chair.
Charles Hamilton, the chairman, cleared his throat.
“Julian, under the emergency governance provisions, your executive authority has been suspended pending investigation.”
Julian laughed.
“Investigation of what?”
Margaret Shaw opened a folder.
“Unauthorized asset transfers.”
“I authorized them.”
“That is the problem.”
Julian leaned back.
“I’m CEO.”
“You were permitted to operate certain assets.”
Margaret’s voice remained calm.
“You were not permitted to transfer underlying ownership, pledged revenue rights, or intellectual property outside approved corporate structures.”
Julian looked around the table.
“These people work for me.”
No one moved.
Elena finally spoke.
“They work for the company.”
Julian pointed at her.
“You are my wife.”
“Not relevant.”
“Everything you have came through our marriage.”
Thomas moved for the first time.
His expression was almost pitying.
Julian hated that more than anger.
Margaret placed a document on the table.
“Meridian Crown Hospitality is sixty-two percent controlled through voting instruments held by the Vale Heritage Trust and related entities.”
Julian stared at her.
“That’s impossible.”
Another document appeared.
“The land beneath fourteen domestic flagship resorts is owned by North Vale Properties.”
Another.
“The brand licensing portfolio is controlled by Ardent Heritage Holdings.”
Another.
“Six major loan guarantees are secured through Vale Capital Preservation Fund.”
Another.
“Conditional voting authority passed to Elena Vale Mercer six years ago.”
Julian looked at Elena.
Six years.
She had possessed that power for six years.
“You lied to me.”
Elena’s expression did not change.
“No.”
“You hid this.”
“Yes.”
“That’s the same thing.”
“No, Julian.”
She leaned forward.
“You never asked.”
The boardroom became silent.
Julian looked around at people who had once laughed before he finished jokes.
No one smiled now.
He pointed at Elena again.
“You think you can erase me?”
Elena reached for the final folder.
“No.”
“I think you tried to erase me.”
She opened it.
May you like
“And now we’re going to find out how far you went.”
