Chapter 13 - RETURN TO THE GRAND AURELIA

The Grand Aurelia lobby was brighter than Elena remembered.

Maybe because the last time she had stood there, rain and humiliation had blurred everything.

Tonight, every chandelier glittered.

Investors filled the lounge.

Executives gathered near the ballroom doors.

Reporters waited outside after hearing rumors that Julian Mercer would make a major announcement.

Julian arrived at seven.

He wore the navy suit Elena once bought him for their anniversary.

The irony almost made her laugh.

Camila walked beside him.

She was not wearing the emerald.

That mattered.

Julian moved through the lobby shaking hands.

For an hour, he behaved like nothing had changed.

Then he entered the ballroom.

A large Meridian Crown logo glowed behind the stage.

Julian stepped to the microphone.

“My friends, our company is facing an unprecedented attack.”

Elena watched from a private monitor upstairs.

Julian spoke beautifully.

That had always been one of his greatest talents.

He described himself as a builder.

A founder.

A protector of thousands of jobs.

Then he described unnamed family interests attempting a hostile seizure.

Some investors nodded.

Others looked uneasy.

Finally, Julian smiled.

“I will not allow personal resentment to destroy what I built.”

That was Elena’s cue.

The ballroom doors opened.

Heads turned.

Elena walked inside.

No dramatic music.

No entourage.

Only Margaret beside her and two representatives of the Vale Heritage Trust.

Julian froze.

Elena continued toward the stage.

The room became silent.

“You weren’t invited.”

Elena stopped near the front row.

“I own the ballroom.”

A few people laughed nervously.

Julian’s face tightened.

“This is exactly the behavior I warned everyone about.”

Elena turned toward the investors.

“My husband is correct about one thing.”

Julian looked surprised.

Elena continued.

“Tonight is about ownership.”

She held up a folder.

“Every person in this room deserves to know who owns what Julian is asking you to defend.”

Screens behind the stage suddenly changed.

The Meridian Crown logo disappeared.

A simplified ownership diagram appeared.

Vale Heritage Trust.

North Vale Properties.

Ardent Heritage Holdings.

Meridian Crown Hospitality.

Investors leaned forward.

Julian looked toward the technicians.

“Turn that off.”

Nobody moved.

Elena walked onto the stage.

“This resort stands on land controlled by my family.”

Another slide appeared.

“The brand operating inside it is licensed through a company controlled by my family trust.”

Another.

“Most major expansion debt is guaranteed through our capital structure.”

Another.

“And the voting rights Julian has repeatedly described as his are not his.”

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Julian stepped toward Elena.

“You manipulated everything behind my back.”

Elena looked at him.

“No.”

“You built your entire identity on top of paperwork you were too arrogant to read.”

The room became perfectly still.

Then Elena gave the signal for the final slide.

It showed a scanned document.

Julian’s signature appeared at the bottom.

The document was seven years old.

It acknowledged the exact ownership structure he now claimed had been hidden from him.

Elena faced the audience.

“He signed it.”

Julian stared at his own signature.

May you like

For the first time, his story had nowhere to stand.
