Chapter 7 - HIS VERSION OF THE TRUTH

By afternoon, Julian decided he needed the public before Elena could control the private.
A statement appeared through a respected financial journalist.
It claimed Meridian Crown was suffering from “an internal family dispute involving an emotionally distressed minority stakeholder.”
Elena read it once.
Then again.
Minority stakeholder.
Emotionally distressed.
She almost admired how efficiently Julian had reduced nine years of work to two insults.
The statement continued.
It suggested Elena’s family had abused obscure trust provisions to interfere with normal business operations.
It described Julian as the founder and visionary leader attempting to protect employees from a “personal marital conflict.”
Within an hour, several business outlets repeated the language.
Elena’s phone filled with messages.
Some supportive.
Some curious.
Some opportunistic.
Thomas entered her office.
“Want us to respond?”
Elena looked at the television.
A commentator was discussing whether a “bitter divorce” could threaten Meridian Crown.
“No.”
Thomas raised an eyebrow.
“You’re going to let him define the story?”
“For today.”
“Why?”
Elena turned off the television.
“Because people say more when they think you’re losing.”
That evening, the strategy worked.
Employees began forwarding messages.
One came from a former procurement director who had resigned eleven months earlier.
She claimed Julian pressured her to approve vendor contracts without competitive review.
Another came from an assistant who said Camila regularly attended meetings under false job titles.
A third came from a regional manager who had been threatened after questioning unexplained payments.
Then a message arrived from someone Elena had not expected.
Adrian Cross.
We need to talk privately.
Elena read it twice.
She had never trusted Adrian completely.
He had spent years standing beside Julian.
Margaret advised caution.
Thomas advised surveillance.
Elena chose both.
Adrian arrived at a law office after dark.
He placed his phone on the table.
“I recorded something.”
Margaret played the file.
Julian’s voice filled the room.
“If we accelerate the acquisition before the trust blocks it, their voting position gets diluted.”
Elena did not move.
The recording continued.
There were references to prepared treasury documents.
Outside investors.
A plan created before the lobby confrontation.
When the audio ended, Adrian looked at Elena.
“He wasn’t just leaving you.”
“He was preparing to move the company out from under you.”
Elena’s eyes remained on the phone.
“Why are you helping me?”
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
“Because I thought Julian was ruthless.”
He paused.
“I didn’t realize he was reckless.”
Elena leaned back.
“That’s not an answer.”
Adrian swallowed.
Then he said the sentence that changed the investigation again.
May you like
“Because my name is on one of the documents.”
