Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN IN MY COAT

Camila had enjoyed exactly nine hours of victory.

By eight o’clock, the penthouse no longer felt like a trophy.

It felt like a trap.

She stood in front of the mirror wearing Elena’s grandmother’s emerald pendant.

The stone had looked magnificent the night before.

Now it seemed to carry weight.

Julian was pacing behind her.

“Take that off.”

Camila looked at him through the mirror.

“You gave it to me.”

“I said take it off.”

Her expression tightened.

“You told me Elena was finished.”

“She is.”

“Then why can’t you open your office?”

Julian said nothing.

Camila unclasped the necklace angrily and placed it on the dresser.

“You said the company belonged to you.”

“It does.”

“You said Elena had no legal authority.”

“She doesn’t.”

“Then why is your name disappearing from everything?”

Julian spun toward her.

“Because she’s playing games with her father.”

Camila folded her arms.

“Her father owns what?”

Julian stopped.

That question had begun haunting him.

He had met Thomas Vale dozens of times.

The older man never discussed money.

He never bragged.

He never challenged Julian publicly.

At family dinners, Thomas sometimes listened while Julian described new acquisitions as if hearing the information for the first time.

Julian had interpreted that silence as irrelevance.

Now he was beginning to wonder whether Thomas had been listening for another reason.

Camila picked up her phone.

“There are rumors everywhere.”

She turned the screen toward him.

Industry executives were already texting about an emergency restructuring at Meridian Crown.

One message claimed Julian had been suspended.

Another claimed a private ownership group had exercised control rights overnight.

A third contained a photograph of the notice bearing the name Vale Heritage Trust.

Camila stared at him.

“You never told me Elena was connected to a trust.”

“I didn’t know.”

The words escaped before Julian could stop them.

Camila’s face changed.

“You didn’t know?”

Julian walked toward the window.

Below them, guests were arriving beneath the entrance canopy.

The resort looked exactly as it had yesterday.

The same fountains.

The same staff.

The same gold insignia above the doors.

But for the first time, Julian felt like he was looking at someone else’s building.

His phone rang.

Finally.

The chairman.

Julian answered immediately.

“Charles.”

The voice on the other end was cold.

“You are required at the emergency board meeting at eight-thirty.”

Julian smiled.

“Good.”

“There are conditions.”

His smile disappeared.

“You may attend as the suspended chief executive.”

Julian gripped the phone.

“I am not suspended.”

“You are as of 5:56 this morning.”

“On whose authority?”

Charles paused.

Then he answered.

“The controlling authority.”

Julian turned toward Camila.

“And who exactly is that?”

There was another silence.

“Elena.”

The call ended.

Camila stared at him.

Julian slowly lowered the phone.

For nine years, he had treated his wife like the person standing beside the throne.

At eight thirteen that morning, he began to understand something far worse.

May you like

She might have been the throne.
