Chapter 8 - THE SIGNATURE

Adrian admitted Julian had asked him to sign several preliminary acquisition papers.

He claimed they were routine.

He claimed he did not know the purpose.

Margaret did not believe him.

Neither did Elena.

But the documents mattered more than his excuses.

One paper authorized temporary movement of corporate intellectual property.

Another created an option allowing an outside investment consortium to acquire preferred shares.

The third contained Elena’s signature.

Elena stared at it.

The signature looked real.

It was not.

She knew immediately.

The curve of the E was wrong.

The pressure pattern was too smooth.

Someone had copied her signature from a digital file.

Margaret’s expression changed.

“This has gone beyond a governance dispute.”

Adrian became pale.

“I never saw that page.”

Elena looked at him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

“But it’s true.”

Thomas picked up the document.

“Who prepared the package?”

Adrian hesitated.

“Julian’s private counsel.”

“Name.”

“Robert Kessler.”

Elena knew him.

Kessler had attended Christmas dinners.

He had toasted their anniversary.

He had once looked Elena in the eye and told her Julian was lucky to have a wife who understood business.

Now his office had apparently produced a document carrying her forged approval.

Elena stood.

“Preserve everything.”

Margaret nodded.

“No calls to Kessler?”

“Not yet.”

Thomas understood immediately.

They wanted him comfortable.

Across the city, Julian was doing exactly what Elena hoped.

He was becoming confident again.

His public statement had moved markets only slightly.

Several investors called him privately to express support.

Camila told him the story was shifting.

Julian began believing he could survive.

Then his attorney called.

“We have a problem.”

Julian poured a drink.

“What problem?”

“The transfer package may have been discovered.”

Julian became still.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who knew about it?”

“Adrian.”

Julian’s face changed.

He ended the call and immediately dialed Adrian.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Camila watched him.

“What happened?”

Julian grabbed his jacket.

“Adrian made a mistake.”

Camila followed him toward the door.

“What kind?”

Julian stopped.

“The kind people only make once.”

Downstairs, however, Adrian was no longer in the building.

He was sitting in a protected conference room with Elena’s attorneys.

And he was explaining where Julian kept the backup records.

Not at the office.

Not at home.

Not in the cloud.

Inside a private storage vault registered under another name.

Elena listened carefully.

Then Adrian gave her the address.

May you like

It was underneath one of her family’s own resorts.
