Chapter 10 - WHAT REMOVE ME MEANT

Nobody spoke while the video played.
Julian stood beside the whiteboard explaining the final stage of his plan.
There was no physical threat.
That almost made it worse.
He spoke about Elena like she was a defective asset.
First, she would lose operational authority.
Then public credibility.
Then access to employees.
Then her marriage.
Finally, lawyers would challenge any control rights she attempted to exercise.
Kessler asked what would happen if Elena revealed the family trusts.
Julian smiled on the recording.
“She won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Elena hates scandal more than she hates losing.”
Elena watched herself being reduced to a predictable weakness.
For years, Julian had interpreted dignity as fear.
He believed she would protect the family name even while he dismantled everything attached to it.
The recording continued.
Camila entered the room carrying Elena’s emerald pendant.
She held it up.
“What about this?”
Julian barely looked at it.
“Keep it.”
Camila laughed.
“She’ll notice.”
“That’s the point.”
Elena closed her eyes briefly.
The pendant had not been carelessness.
It had been deliberate.
Julian wanted her to see it.
He wanted humiliation to provoke an emotional reaction.
He wanted security cameras to capture Elena screaming or striking Camila.
Then he could use the footage.
Instead, Elena had walked into the rain.
That single decision had ruined part of his plan.
Thomas stopped the video.
“I’ve seen enough.”
Elena opened her eyes.
“I haven’t.”
“Elena.”
“No.”
Her voice remained quiet.
“I spent nine years being the person who didn’t want to know.”
She pressed play.
The next recording was dated four days earlier.
Julian was alone with Kessler.
Kessler looked nervous.
“If the Vale structure is stronger than we think, this could collapse.”
Julian poured two drinks.
“Then we create leverage.”
“What leverage?”
Julian smiled.
“We make sure the company can’t function without me.”
The video ended.
Margaret immediately turned toward the investigators.
“Search for operational sabotage.”
Within twenty minutes, they found it.
Julian had arranged clauses in major supplier agreements allowing cancellation if his executive position changed.
He had encouraged lenders to communicate through him personally.
He had moved key software licenses under a separate management entity.
He had planted obstacles throughout the company.
If he fell, he intended the resorts to fall with him.
Elena stared at the documents.
Then she finally understood.
Julian had not loved the empire enough to protect it.
He had only loved being the man standing on top of it.
She turned to Margaret.
“Call every general manager.”
Thomas looked at her.
“What are you doing?”
May you like
“Removing the explosives before he realizes we found them.”
