Chapter 17 - THE LAST THING JULIAN OWNED

By morning, Julian had one remaining source of leverage.

His reputation.

He contacted every journalist who would listen.

He claimed Elena had detained Camila.

He claimed private investigators had illegally seized records.

He accused the Vale family of weaponizing wealth to destroy him.

But the story was changing too fast.

The board issued its first official statement.

Julian Mercer had been suspended following evidence of unauthorized transactions and potential misconduct.

Then Charles Hamilton resigned.

Then three executives requested legal counsel.

Then Robert Kessler was stopped before boarding his flight and questioned regarding company records under an active legal preservation order.

Nobody was convicted of anything.

No final court had ruled.

But the appearance of unstoppable power surrounding Julian was gone.

He watched news coverage alone.

Every headline used the same word.

Suspended.

Not founder.

Not visionary.

Not titan.

Suspended.

Elena came to see him that afternoon.

Julian looked exhausted.

“You finally came to celebrate?”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

“To give you something.”

She placed a folder on the table.

Divorce papers.

Julian stared at them.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he laughed softly.

“You think you won.”

Elena remained standing.

“I think this marriage is over.”

“You destroyed everything because I cheated.”

“No.”

His eyes lifted.

“You could have forgiven the affair.”

“Maybe.”

That answer surprised him.

Elena continued.

“I could not forgive the theft.”

Silence.

“I could not forgive the forged signature.”

Julian looked away.

“I could not forgive you planning to manufacture evidence against me.”

His jaw tightened.

“And I will never forgive what you did with my grandmother’s jewelry.”

Julian looked back.

“It was jewelry.”

Elena stared at him.

That sentence ended something inside her more completely than the affair ever had.

“To you.”

She turned toward the door.

Julian stood.

“Elena.”

She stopped.

“If you leave now, don’t pretend you built this alone.”

Elena looked over her shoulder.

“I never said I did.”

“You needed me.”

“Yes.”

He seemed unprepared for the answer.

Elena continued.

“I needed your ambition.”

“I needed your ability to sell a vision.”

“I needed your courage when the company was small.”

“And for a long time, I loved you.”

Julian’s face changed.

“But needing someone once doesn’t mean owing them everything forever.”

She opened the door.

Julian’s voice followed her.

“What do I have left?”

Elena looked at him one final time.

“Whatever you didn’t steal.”

Then she walked away.

For the first time in decades, Julian Mercer had to discover what belonged to him when nobody else’s property could be counted.
