Chapter 11: The Invisible Mastermind

Chapter 11: The Invisible Mastermind

The boardroom remained silent.

No one looked away from the screen.

The folder titled STERLING FAMILY — FINAL ACQUISITION PLAN was unlike anything the investigators had expected.

This was no opportunistic theft.

It was a blueprint.

A long-term operation.

Someone had studied the Sterling family for years.

Charles slowly lowered himself into his chair.

His expression had changed completely.

For the first time that day...

He wasn't thinking as a businessman.

He was thinking as a father.

The cybersecurity director carefully examined the flash drive.

"I don't believe this was created by Ms. Hart."

Marcus looked up.

"What makes you say that?"

"The metadata."

He enlarged several files.

"Most of these documents were created eight years ago."

Marcus frowned.

"But I didn't even meet Isabella Hart until five years ago."

"Exactly."

The room became very quiet.

Someone else had started the operation long before she entered Marcus's life.

The Head of Digital Forensics continued.

"These files have been edited by at least four different computers."

He pointed toward the access logs.

"One in New York."

"One in London."

"One in Singapore."

"And one..."

He zoomed in.

"...inside our own headquarters."

Charles slowly raised his eyes.

"Inside this building?"

The forensic specialist nodded.

"Yes."

A murmur spread across the board.

One director leaned forward.

"Are you saying we have someone on the inside?"

"I'm saying someone inside the company had access to confidential Sterling family information."

The Chairman looked toward the General Counsel.

"How many employees have access to these archives?"

"Less than twenty."

Charles corrected him.

"Less than nineteen."

Everyone turned toward him.

"There is one person who never had authorized access."

Marcus.

Marcus lowered his head.

"I never looked at those files."

Charles nodded.

"I believe you."

The words surprised everyone.

Including Marcus.

Meanwhile...

At the Grand Crescent Hotel...

Detective Laura Bennett received another report.

She entered the interview room carrying a slim folder.

"Ms. Hart."

Isabella looked exhausted.

"We verified your employment history."

She remained silent.

"You told us you grew up in Denver."

"Yes."

"You worked in luxury retail."

"Yes."

"You met Marcus by chance."

"Yes."

The detective placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Isabella Hart entering an office building six years earlier.

Standing beside an older man in an expensive gray suit.

"Who's this?"

Isabella's expression froze.

"I..."

"You know him."

Silence.

The detective waited.

Finally...

"My former employer."

"What was his name?"

"...Victor Kane."

Back at headquarters...

The name immediately caught Charles's attention.

"Victor Kane?"

The General Counsel looked shocked.

"The corporate raider?"

Charles nodded slowly.

"So he's alive."

Marcus frowned.

"You know him?"

Charles walked toward the window.

"I've known him for thirty years."

He looked out across the Chicago skyline.

"Victor Kane built his fortune by acquiring companies."

"When owners refused to sell..."

"He found another way."

One director added quietly,

"He never stole businesses."

"He manipulated the people who controlled them."

Charles nodded.

"He destroyed marriages."

"Turned siblings against one another."

"Bribed executives."

"Bought politicians."

"But he never left fingerprints."

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"And now..."

Charles turned back.

"...he wanted my family."

The General Counsel searched the company's historical files.

Within minutes, another document appeared.

"Mr. Sterling."

"You need to see this."

He projected an old newspaper article onto the screen.

1998

STERLING FAMILY REJECTS $4.8 BILLION TAKEOVER OFFER

Submitted by:

Kane International Holdings

Charles smiled bitterly.

"I rejected him personally."

Another article followed.

2004

Second Acquisition Attempt Fails

Then another.

2012

Sterling Family Again Refuses Sale

Marcus looked stunned.

"He tried three times?"

Charles nodded.

"And failed every time."

The room fell silent.

Then Marcus whispered,

"So he changed tactics."

Instead of buying the empire...

Someone had decided to infiltrate it.

Detective Bennett called headquarters.

"We found something else."

The call was placed on speaker.

"What is it?"

"We searched Ms. Hart's apartment."

Charles remained silent.

"There was almost nothing personal."

"What do you mean?"

"No childhood photographs."

"No family albums."

"No university diplomas."

"No employment awards."

"Nothing."

Marcus frowned.

"That's impossible."

The detective continued.

"It looks less like a home..."

"...and more like a temporary assignment."

Isabella Hart lowered her head.

She knew the truth could no longer be hidden.

She whispered,

"I never planned to stay."

The detective looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

She closed her eyes.

"The plan was always to leave after the transfer."

Back in the boardroom...

Marcus felt physically ill.

"You used me."

No one answered.

Not because they disagreed.

Because they didn't need to.

Charles sat beside Isabella.

His daughter looked tired.

Emotionally exhausted.

He gently placed a hand over hers.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him.

"For what?"

"I blamed Marcus for everything."

She smiled sadly.

"He still betrayed me."

"Yes."

Charles nodded.

"But betrayal..."

He glanced toward the screen.

"...and manipulation aren't always the same thing."

Just then, the cybersecurity director interrupted.

"Wait."

Everyone looked up.

"I found something hidden."

Inside the flash drive was an encrypted folder that hadn't appeared during the first scan.

"What is it?"

"It requires a password."

The forensic team tried standard recovery methods.

Nothing worked.

Then one analyst noticed a clue.

"The folder creation date..."

He enlarged it.

"It matches the day Mrs. Sterling's mother died."

Charles frowned.

"My wife's funeral..."

The analyst nodded.

"I think the password may be connected to her."

Charles quietly spoke one word.

"Evelyn."

The analyst typed it.

Access Denied.

Another tried her birthday.

Nothing.

Then Isabella looked at the screen.

"My mother's favorite phrase."

Charles turned toward her.

She smiled through tears.

"She always said..."

"'Integrity outlives wealth.'"

The analyst typed:

IntegrityOutlivesWealth

The folder opened.

Inside was a single video file.

No title.

No date.

The forensic director clicked Play.

The screen flickered.

Then an older man appeared.

Silver hair.

Tailored suit.

Cold blue eyes.

He smiled directly into the camera.

"Good evening, Charles."

The room froze.

Charles's face hardened instantly.

He whispered,

"...Victor Kane."

The man continued speaking calmly.

"If you're watching this..."

"...it means you've finally discovered the game."

May you like

The screen faded to black.
