Chapter 6: One Chance to Walk Away

Chapter 6: One Chance to Walk Away

The boardroom was so quiet that Marcus could hear the ticking of the antique clock mounted above the fireplace.

Every director looked toward Isabella.

Not Charles.

Not the Chairman.

Her.

Charles had spoken the truth.

The decision belonged to the woman Marcus had humiliated less than twelve hours earlier.

Marcus slowly stood.

His confidence was gone, but pride remained.

"So..." he said quietly.

"You've been planning this all along."

Isabella met his eyes.

"No."

"I spent eleven years hoping I would never have to."

The Chairman folded his hands.

"Mrs. Sterling, as controlling beneficiary, the Board requests your recommendation."

Every face turned toward her.

Isabella remained silent for several moments.

She looked around the room.

At directors she had known for years.

At executives who had watched her quietly solve crises without asking for recognition.

Then...

She looked at Marcus.

"I don't want revenge."

Several people exchanged surprised glances.

Marcus frowned.

"You don't?"

She slowly removed her wedding ring.

She turned it once between her fingers before placing it gently on the polished conference table.

"No."

"I wanted honesty."

Flashbacks filled her mind.

Marcus carrying boxes into their tiny first apartment.

Marcus burning pancakes every Sunday morning because he insisted on making breakfast.

Marcus staying awake beside her hospital bed after she underwent emergency surgery.

The man she had loved had once been real.

Somewhere along the way...

Success had replaced gratitude.

Power had replaced humility.

And applause had replaced love.

Charles quietly watched his daughter.

He recognized the sadness in her eyes.

Not anger.

Grief.

There was a difference.

Isabella finally spoke again.

"Marcus."

"I have one question."

He nodded cautiously.

"When did you stop believing we were partners?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked out the window toward the Chicago skyline.

"I don't know."

She smiled sadly.

"I do."

She stood and walked toward the large screen.

The General Counsel understood immediately and handed her a remote.

She pressed one button.

A photograph appeared.

Marcus smiled faintly.

"Our first hotel."

The building was old.

Only ninety-two rooms.

The lobby had unfinished walls.

The carpet hadn't even been installed.

They were standing together in the center of the picture.

Covered in dust.

Laughing.

Another photograph appeared.

Marcus changing bed linens beside housekeeping staff.

Another.

Cleaning tables in the restaurant because two employees had called in sick.

Another.

Helping a maintenance technician repair a broken water pipe at two in the morning.

The room remained silent.

Then Isabella displayed one final photograph.

It had been taken only three months earlier.

Marcus stood on stage accepting another business award.

Behind him...

Housekeepers applauded.

Bellmen smiled.

Restaurant servers clapped politely.

None of them appeared in the headline the next morning.

Only Marcus.

She looked at him.

"That's when."

Marcus lowered his eyes.

He remembered every photograph.

Especially the first one.

Back then...

He had thanked every employee by name.

Now...

He barely recognized department managers.

The Chairman broke the silence.

"Mrs. Sterling."

"The Board requires a recommendation."

She nodded.

"I know."

She returned to her chair.

Then surprised everyone.

Including her father.

"I recommend..."

She paused.

"...that Marcus Ashford not be terminated today."

Several directors looked stunned.

One even whispered,

"What?"

Charles remained perfectly still.

He trusted his daughter.

Marcus stared in disbelief.

"What are you doing?"

She looked directly at him.

"I'm giving you something you never gave me."

"A choice."

The General Counsel frowned.

"Mrs. Sterling..."

She raised a hand gently.

"Please."

Then she looked back at Marcus.

"You have exactly one opportunity."

The room became perfectly still.

She slid a prepared document across the table.

Marcus looked down.

The title read:

VOLUNTARY RESIGNATION AGREEMENT

He frowned.

She continued calmly.

"If you sign today..."

"The Board will accept your resignation."

"No public accusations."

"No press conference."

"No litigation."

"No criminal referral regarding company expenditures."

Marcus's heartbeat quickened.

She continued.

"You will receive the compensation guaranteed under your employment contract."

"You may keep your personal investments."

"You may begin a new life."

"But..."

She pointed toward another page.

"You will immediately return every company asset."

"Every confidential document."

"Every executive credential."

"And the sapphire brooch."

Marcus slowly looked up.

"And if I refuse?"

The General Counsel answered before Isabella could.

"Then the forensic audit begins immediately."

Another director added,

"The audit covers every expense from the past eleven years."

Another spoke.

"Every acquisition."

"Every executive authorization."

"Every reimbursement."

"Every private flight."

"Every entertainment account."

The CFO quietly placed six thick binders onto the table.

"There are approximately forty-three thousand financial transactions."

Marcus stared.

The binders seemed endless.

Charles finally spoke.

"My daughter asked for mercy."

"I would not have."

He looked calmly toward Marcus.

"I would have started the audit this morning."

Marcus picked up the resignation agreement.

His hands trembled slightly.

One signature.

That was all.

His career would end quietly.

His reputation might survive.

His freedom certainly would.

He looked at Isabella.

"Why?"

She answered honestly.

"Because despite everything..."

"I don't want to destroy the man I married."

"I only want him to stop pretending to be someone he isn't."

For the first time since entering the room...

Marcus looked genuinely ashamed.

He remembered the previous night.

Ordering security to remove her.

Allowing Isabella Hart to wear the sapphire brooch.

Calling the Grand Crescent...

"His hotel."

He closed his eyes.

Then—

The conference room door burst open.

Everyone turned.

Daniel Reeves hurried inside.

His usually calm face had gone pale.

"I'm sorry for interrupting."

The Chairman frowned.

"This meeting is private."

"I know, sir."

"But this couldn't wait."

He handed a tablet to the General Counsel.

The lawyer looked at the screen.

His expression immediately changed.

Charles noticed.

"What is it?"

The lawyer looked toward Isabella.

"Mrs. Sterling..."

"I believe you need to see this."

He turned the tablet around.

Security footage from the Grand Crescent Hotel began playing.

Recorded less than an hour earlier.

The Presidential Suite.

Isabella Hart.

She wasn't packing.

She wasn't leaving.

Instead...

She was opening the private in-room safe using a code Marcus himself had given her.

One by one...

She removed velvet jewelry boxes.

Property deeds.

A leather portfolio stamped with the Sterling family crest.

Then she placed everything into designer luggage.

Finally...

She picked up the sapphire brooch.

Smiled at her reflection.

And said with a laugh,

"Once Marcus owns everything today..."

"...all of this will belong to me anyway."

The video ended.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Charles slowly leaned back in his chair.

His eyes became colder than steel.

The Chairman quietly closed the tablet.

Then looked at Marcus.

"The offer Mrs. Sterling made..."

He paused.

"...may no longer be available."

Marcus's face drained of all color.

Because for the first time...

He realized he wasn't only trying to save himself anymore.

May you like

He was about to discover just how much damage Isabella Hart had done in his name.
